Use Them as a Plot Device:
|
Will your characters find a random marble chess piece in an old drawer somewhere and follow that lead onto an epic quest to find the rest of the pieces before someone else does?
Or will the heroes find that an evil wizard has already collected all the black pieces and is using them to hunt down and destroy all the white pieces so he can complete his diabolical plans unopposed?
Maybe the characters find a complete, intact set, but learning the command words to use the pieces becomes an adventure in itself.
What if the pieces were animated with spirits from an alternate universe and were able to impart rare and exotic information?
Perhaps an evil wizard has created a set of black pieces and is using them to further his nefarious plans. the heroes must find the white pieces or find the components to create the white pieces to stop him before it is too late.
|
Use Them as Game Enhancements:
|
What hero wouldn't love to have a sorcerer or a knight or a bishop in his pocket, ready and waiting to do his bidding?
Maybe the villains in your campaign are armed with these magic items and use them to overwhelm the heroes?
Perhaps the only way your characters can learn the exotic feats and spells that these pieces know is to learn them directly from the animated pieces?

"Each of these figurines of wondrous power appears to be a miniature statuette of a person two inches or so high. When the figurine is tossed down and the correct command word spoken, it becomes a living person of normal size. The person obeys and serves its owner. Unless stated otherwise, the person understands Common but does not speak.
If a figurine of wondrous power is broken or destroyed in its statuette form, it is forever ruined. All magic is lost, its power departed. If slain in humanoid form, the figurine simply reverts to a statuette that can be used again at a later time.."
