Description:
The Sumida Wolseley Sokosha (Armored Car) is a milestone for the Japanese military. Built in Japan's era of imperialism before World War II, the Sumida Wolseley Sokosha holds the distinction of being the first armored vehicle to be mass produced by Japan. Entering service during the Jinan Incident of 1928, their presence was instrumental in halting the Northern Expedition, Chiang Kai-Shek's effort to expand nationalist influence into the warlord controlled regions of northern China. They would also play important roles in the Mukden Incident of 1931, the pacification of Jehol, and both Shanghai Incidents in 1932 and 1937. And after Japan moved on to use better and more modern vehicles, the Sumida Wolseley Sokosha would soldier on as part of the armor formations of the Machukuoan Army.
The Sumida Wolseley Sokosha was not Japan's first armored vehicle. When it entered service, Japan had already procured an estimated 60 tanks, tankettes and armored cars. It also wasn't the first armored vehicle built by Japan. At least four different attempts to make armored cars and two attempts at tanks preceded it. But it was the first built in quantity beyond one or two experimental vehicles or prototypes. The Sumida Wolseley Sokosha was derived from the British-designed 1.5 ton Wolseley CP truck, which entered indigenous production in Japan only a few years earlier. The physical form was inspired by the Vickers-Crossly armored car. Though almost outdated before it was even built, the Sumida Wolseley Sokosha also bore very modern features, including design aspects that are today considered intrinsic to the techniques used to mineproof vehicles.
This document fully details the Sumida Wolseley Sokosha, plus the Taisho 11 heavy machine gun that armed it. Appendices providing information compatible with D20 Modern, Spycraft 2.0, and Savage Worlds is included.
