The crisp night air cuts across the guard's cheek. He shivers and mutters a curse under his breath, leaving a thin trail of white frost from his lips. Winter is coming and as the moon rises higher into the sky, the temperature continues to drop. His chainmail stiffens and the iron of his short sword has frosted to the scabbard. From the bushes, you slip your dagger gently into your hand and get ready for that perfect moment. When the guard grabs hold of his fur cloak and wraps it tighter around his chest, you leap forward and jab the blade deep into his back, slapping your other hand over his mouth. The guard gasps and the last puff of hot breath moistens your hand; the dagger punctured his lungs and it does not take long for all the air to escape through the wound. The shock of the killing blow makes the guard go limp in your arms and in a few moments, he is dead. Once the body is dragged into the bush, you wipe your dagger clean and move onto the next one.
