In early June 2005, Atomic Sock Monkey Press held a contest, seeking Truth & Justice characters for a free supplement. Dial S for Superhumans is composed of those contest entries.

Contestants could enter either original art or a character write-up for a specific provided piece of art (aka "Contest Dude"). Extra consideration was given to entries that provided supplementary material or met other requirements. With the kind permission of AFD Studios, Inc., illustrations created with their HeroMachine customized character portrait generator were eligible for submission. Winners of the contest would receive contributor credit on this book and a free copy of Truth & Justice upon publication.

Initially, only sixteen entries were intended to appear in Dial S for Superhumans. . . However, as the submissions continued to roll in, the editor made the decision that they were all exciting enough to include!
