Beyond the door we could hear the highway, the cars, the trucks, the roar of freedom. Beyond the door. But the twenty feet between us and the door, between us and the highway... Only the lighter's dying blue flame interrupted that ocean of darkness... where It waited, just where we left It.

Explore hostile worlds of your own creation with Dread, a game carved from the intense emotions buried in your favorite horror stories. Through individually crafted questionnaires, players are coaxed into revealing their characters' abilities, shortcomings, personalities, and fears. These characters are plunged into macabre tales devised by the host. When moments of conflict and peril arise in the story, it is the players' nerves, rather than the whims of dice, that determine the fates of their characters.

This PDF, a few friends, your own sick imagination, and one set of Jenga® blocks is all you need.

"The most intense, innovative horror game I've had the pleasure of playing in years. Turn down the lights, pull out the tower, and try to keep your hands steady!" - Matt "BlackHat" McFarland, former developer of White Wolf's Dark Ages line

"Dread is... a look at what roleplaying can be, not a look at what it already is." - James D. Hargrove, reviewer.

"Dude, seriously, Dread. Unease and nerves are physically built into the resolution mechanics of the game!" - Luke Crane, author of the Burning Wheel and Burning Empires

"Dread is so damn good, I'm converting my home D20 Modern game of psychological horror and madness to Dread!" - Chris O'Neill, 9th Level Games

Dread is a horror role playing game, designed to be played in single sessions. While you probably can have a character come back for "sequels" it's not a focus of the game. I found this game due to Table Top, and the $3 price point fell into the "what [...]

Downloaded without any problems. It cost as much as it said it would (which, for $3, was a great deal). The book has lots of interesting and informative information about running this RPG. Can't wait to play it! [...]

Dread was a very interesting game, and definitely worth checking out. It doesn't really have much campaign potential, but it's great for single games. The mechanics are novel and really do build to the atmosphere of a horror game, and while there are [...]

This was an easy download with no complications. The instructions could have been a little more clear on saying the site will send you an email, but once i checked my email the link was there and easy to download. [...]

Dread is an innovative horror RPG with (perhaps) the most unusual resolution mechanic out there: a Jenga tower. Although not for everybody, this excellent storytelling game is a tour de force of a rules-light system perfectly matched to its genre – [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
