My mind was blown with the amount of information on Heavy Gear Assault. Concept illustrations and Masterclass sections are inspirational. Golder Gear photos and winners are a good reference for color combinations. Well worth the wait!

I know my reviews of DP9 products might seem bit 'samish', because of all the praises and positives, but I MUST explain one thing. If I don't think something is worth my time I won't waste it to even write a review. But when I feel I really have to share my opinions with someone, or I see something good that doesn't get much attention, I feel obliged especially to developers, original authors and creators, to somehow return the favor for giving me a great product. It's my way of saying "thank you".
Now, what you have here involves a lot of information on structure and shape of the Southern Republic Army, what kind of culture it's based on, what are it's traditions. It is full of fluff for both wargamers and roleplayers and the ratio is balanced perfectly not allowing any enthusiast to really feel neglected. Fluff for roleplayers involves backgrounds, descriptions, characters to use, along with scenarios to fit into any Southern campaign regarding military operations. Whereas same information on backgrounds, provides any wargamer with color patterns and right combat group builds suggested for particular purpose (Covert Ops/Frontline Assault/Recon, whatever you like). Characters may be put into your gears as pilots, spicing up gameplay with their unique skills and scenarios provide both fun and challenge with ongoing development from battle to battle. Instead of just setting up game after game, with nothing else in between like so many other wargames do, Heavy Gear series actually support longer campaigns, where your pilots and machines go from one battle to another, developing their skills, becoming better as objectives become harder and battle more brutal.
This Army List includes such scenarios and strongly supports mixed wargame-roleplaying experience, what again is a unique and very attractive feature to anyone who seeks challenge.

An interresting starter for everyone who wishes to get themselves into Heavy Gear universe, and test themselves both in Role Play and Tactical. This adventure is a great choice because of how well it merges the two aspects with propper pacing giving players a lot of interresting characters to roleplay and interract with and enaugh of Heavy Gear combat to make them remember how powerfull and awesome their machines are, and how fragile they become should they wish to get cought offguard and outside their gears.
As well as other Dream Pod 9 products and adventures this one includes very cunning and well thought advices how to neatly trimm the content to desired power levels or alternative scenarios not including forces of AST or SIU at all, making it a really good and valid thing for any group of players and any campaign even if you play as Northerner or Badlander character.
Before the adventure's briefing we are introduced to a grand backstory and whole palette of characters, political plots that we are encouraged to use as later plothooks or twists in the current line of gameplay, spicing up scenes and making them bit harder.
As for the proposed scenario we are SIU(Special Intervention Unit) top-notch forces with dirty reputation for dirty work and veeery dirty enemies on inside of dirty political machine, who place blame on us for their dirty business when things get dirty... As you may guess, we are not popular, we do a lot of stuff other's would never do and yet we can't deffend ourselves when something goes wrong, nor can we speak about what we achieved cause that is top-secret. The book does fair share of work to let us feel as those shady types who may be considered patriots and heroes in hundread years from now, but now we keep our mouth shut, or things get nasty. During our line of work we're gonna question our morality, superiors, orders, justice of our cause, etc. as we venture deep into lush jungle of Terra Nova on secret covert operation. And trust me, it's gonna get graphic Apocalypse Now style!
Brainwashing, megalomaniacs, army of rejects and frenzy locals... The way this simple recon mission turns out to be is something no one could forsee.
Included we got typicall DP9 short-stories regarding the adventure, fair artwork depicting characters and landscapes, tactical maps. At the very end we are introduced to couple sample characters ready to pick up and play. What is noteworthy is that they have secret information designed only for the eyes of player who chose that character with it's deep needs, interrests, opinions on others and motivations, that would sometimes collide with other characters.
A very interresting adventure and certainly a good buy for just $3.89

Exelent buy and a true must have for people who like well detailed original sci-fi settings heavy on geo-political conflicts, shades-of-gray morality and realistic, ruthles mecha-combat. One reason why I fell in love with this system is... I like tactical systems, I like when a lot of decisions have their own pros and cons so it is vital to utilise whatever there is achieve victory, yet I tend to have a problem with simulations... if a system is too complexed, too roboust and heavy on long calculations, it halts the game, breaks tension and narration pace. So I do also like quick narrative systems, that do just to the atmosphere of gameplay and won't crack your immersion. I hate though when the latters are overly-simplistic, sacrificing reality, thrill and tactical aspect for quickness of gameplay. It seems impossible to make a tactical system that is well defined but yet not slow and clunky... And likewise it seems impossible to forge a system that is quick, fast paced, narrative, SIMPLE, yet does not rob you of all the juicy mods which affect combat, leaving place only for easy effortless stat-slide.
Well ladies, gentlemen, this incarnation of Heavy Gear nails it! Beside the outstanding Silhouette 2 system, which is by far my favorite system of all time, making me even put aside my long time love (Warhammer Fantasy40k percentille system), we got a decent introduction to world of Terra Nova fleshing out basic structures for spy and war drama writers to craft their campaigns. A lot of background details is backed with typical Dream Pod 9 storytelling in between chapters, which introduce us to page-long fragments of an interresting micro-adventure, which leads us in atmosphere of what's included in each section.
Artwork, ilustrations, and general style is unique, recognisable and exquisite. Some may say it carries a lot of jovial charm, and I agree with that, welcoming the style with open arms, for of what you may say about it, it's absolutely impossible to forget or take for something else. Sometimes looking at another generic fantasy art I have no idea what universe I'm looking at, unless this art is on the cover and there's a huge title on top of the page. There is nothing like that with work provided by P. Ouellette's team, if you find yourself on the other side of the world with HG poster on wall somewhere, you'll know in a second: This is Heavy Gear.
There is just one falw I'd like to point out. Namely sometimes rules are, though described in very appealing way, with a doze of sometimes grimm humour, described with enigmatic assumptions and lack propper examples. Rules for granade use and attacks made with them are vague and sometimes confusing, making players and GM analyze them sentence after sentence trying to get the jist of it.
It could have used some more testing, and though such issues are extremely rare in spectrum of whole rulebook's content, they might suddenly freeze a session when you least expect it.
Heavy Gear also provides you with a big section on archetypes and some advices how to build your campaign using those. Instead of building npcs from scratch, rulebook offers an alternative of taking one archetype and slightly alteriing it's stats. It includes sample equipment, list of quirks, etc.
Personally I am a big fan of games that are not forgiving and are deadly to the end. It's really easy to loose life, to die just from one bullet, even fired by a child, with no chance of being magicly revived. It encourages thinking, planning, taking care to even the odds. It's not your easy mode RPG and it is extremely satisfying to overcome the obstacles, surviving the fights.
Learning curve is very smooth. To get the basic mechanics you need only a minute (literally!) and every special rules are either variations of the basic, or just the basic with aditional positive or negative modifiers to a circumstance. Along with simple and ultra-fast point-based character creation system(allowing to create anyone, from executive, to war veteran, swimming instructor or even creepy tall hospital janitor), the rule system and game in general stands out as the best "Pick up and play" release I've ever seen.
Integrated wargame-tactical system translates smoothly back and forth between RP system, so there is no problem with getting into the thick strategy involving players and big warmachines.
This game is an example of what you get, when a group of people work on something and put their hearts in it. They cared to give you great game, great universe and a ton of top-quality content. They deserved my respect.
Cheers, Dream Pod 9!

This sourcebook is another thing you must drive you teeth in, cause, let me tell you, when I see a delicious stake, I want to munch it like Xenomorph-rape-squad which just sniffed out Stephen Hawking's brain. All laughs aside, my friends, amount of work put into this product is extraordinary. My first impression, when reading earlier HG editions, was that on the surface it was quite cartoony action oriented, kinda-jokish world, but as I kept reading, I was deeply surprised, and with a wide smile on my face I asked the God Almighty: "Dear sir in heavens, please, tell me, where are writers working for Dream Pod 9, and why don't they write any novels... and why aren't they known?!" God coudln't answer me...
Well, reason for my reaction was, I really enjoy spy novels, I do read Victor Suvorov's books on cruel inteligence organizations of Soviet Union, corruption, powerstruggle. I love political drama, I adored Borgias and Rome, because the characters are deep, often two-faced, and struggle for various goals, making difficult alliances and weaving webs of intrigues that would make Agatha Crhistie look like Stephanie Meyer.
This is Southern Republic, this is land of steel-glass towers, treachery, codes of honor, vengence, strenght, money and daggers. Sample characters and described profiles for NPCs can be quite shocking, in most positive way. Those guys don't design characters to be black or white. No one is good, and every does what they think is right thing to do. Southern Republic is great setting for espionage adventures and sourcebook includes a huge amount of detailed information on Cities, their power structures, important figures. It is just top-notch.
Within this Sourcebook you get of course new designes for your existing campaigns, new plot hooks, a ton of maps with fleshed out important significant and recognised locations for characters to visit and plan. All is backed up with typical light-hearted style artwork. A ton of technical images follows of course, making this sourcebook a very good buy for it's prize. If you look for a HG setting for your campaign, with a lot of tension, espionage, treason and big scale politics, go for it, you wont regreat.

I always was deeply amazed by the amount of work, original content and ideas put into suplements of Dream Pod 9 earlier games. Yet again, their another product lives up to those expectations. You see it is easy to copy patterns and known, recognized themes from our own world and dress it in a way it looks as if it always belonged to that universe, how often did we saw a complete rip-off of viking culture (for instance) copy-pasted in fantasy game? Dream Pod 9 product is no such thing, those people create their universe from the very bottom, from every detail, unique and fresh. This Sourcebook includes all the information you need to make badlands more juicy setting. It has a lot of information on history, relations, geo-political tensions, geography, cultures, technology, a lot of cut-aways to show how things look specificly, verry well done. You can find here info on trade and cousine, on important and interresting characters, technologys, but the most important is (And I am a huge fan of Politica intrigues) and at the same time most overlooked by people who, perhaps don't want to indulge themselves in well fleshed out geo-political conflict... well, a fleshed out geo-political conflict. This sourcebook gives you new perspective on lives of Badlanders, on wars for resources, huge beurocratic molochs fighting for supremacy on every level of common men life.
Oh! And to all that, you have a unique charming art wrapping it all, and most thrilling short stories on various pages of the book that helps you get into atmosphere of what really goes on in the Badlands.

This book, with the previous one (Perfect Storm - NuCoal Field Guide) are so far the best book DP9 has produced. "Forged in Fire" is very interesting to read with great background information updates and to look at as the layout and the artwork are superb. The way the squads selection works now makes it easier to choose, especially for a new player. My only deception is that my favourite army, the MILICIA, doesn't have access to all the previous variants as it used to. But since I also like the Mekong Dominion, there's still hope as they play style of the Mekong Dominion army has got my attention. Overall, this book is a blast!

My previous review was 4 stars. This one is a 5, because the staff proved its worth. After editing, they also added in a few more tidbits into the rules to smooth out the rules.
Forged in Fire, for all those who are new to Heavy Gear, details in particular the Southern faction, also known as the Allied Southern Territories. Simply put, a lot has happened in the history of the planet Terra Nova, and Forged in Fire puts a special focus on the South and its five separate political entities, and the military forces they command.
After giving you a very in-depth read into the history, they also go through a huge selection of Gears, striders, and tanks that can be used by the armies, each of which has fascinating lineart that utterly preps you for the army list builds.
Using the approach started in the book for NuCoal, Perfect Storm, Forged in Fire has you start with what Priority Level army you would like to go with, as well as Threat Value, and then gives you five separate regimental types, each with its own special focus, including Infantry, Gear, Armor, Airborne, and Special Forces.
The art is outstanding, and its introduces new players and old to the world that Terra Nova is fast becoming since the arrival of Earth's Colonial Expeditionary Force, or CEF. The South will rise, or it will fall, on the choices of its leaders and the actions of its troopers. Are you Geared up?
In short, I am very happy with the new editing, and with the smaller size of this book, it is that much easier for folks to go into and flip through pages and pages of material with hardly any trouble... even for an old dinosaur of a laptop like mine. :)
Welcome to the South, troopers.

My first review of this product was scathing.
But I kept it between myself and RPG staff.
Then a few months later this comes out.
WAY BETTER PRODUCT. And Great customer service. Thanks for listening DP9.
And thanks for speaking for us DriveThru.
The graphics in this are far superior to the first pdf. Not even compatible.
Tons of Vehicles of this great universe. Awesome art, good stats and cool history.
I highly recommend this product now.
No it is not the physical book or have the quality that it does. But it was a quarter of the price.
Cons
It is not perfect but it could also be the design of the book.
I find about 9 in 10 of the great pictures are set on the page just so a piece of the graphic is off the page. Almost like a copy right protection method so they could sell you a book of their art with out a corner of a car or space ship or Gear being cut off the edge of the paper. hmmmmm
It could have OCR as well. that would have been a nice touch.
For these they lost a star.
Over all
FAR superior to original scan.
Product is MUCH improved over original.
4 out of 5 stars.
DP9
You brought me back with this product.
Now please look at your other low res scans and correct them as well.
Thanks

Just a quick FYI, these rules are actually slightly outdated. What this rulebook really provides is the background setting and great history about the world.
It also included a nice painting guide and army guides for building your units.
But the rules have since been updated, and you'll need the Heavy Gear Blitz! Field Manual for that. I would consider this a supplement with great fluff and some painting guidance. But it's free now, so perfect!
