Tavern Games
by Bradley F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/03/2014 14:18:21
It is really difficult to rate a free document, because honestly if you don't like all you wasted is a bit of your time. Columbia Game's Tavern Games document is, however, pretty good. It details, as far as I can tell, real world games and gives most of them a lore-appropriate name. It is well written and doesn't hurt to download as a small supplement for your players to pass time if you need to set things up.

Atlas Map J5
by Bradley F. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/03/2014 14:03:04
This is the first, but definitely not the last, map I have bought. They are very high quality and very detailed, and you can use the measurement tool in adobe reader to measure the mileage between locales (if you are a sucker for precision, like I am). You can certainly zoom in as much as you like because, if I am not mistaken, it is a vector drawing, like something typically done in Adobe Illustrator. In other words, the boundaries, lines, etc. resize as you zoom in to keep everything crisp and smooth (as opposed to raster or pixel images which get blurry as you zoom).

IN SUMMATION; it's a great map to have and use to plan things out or figure distances on the fly, provided you use a computer or something while you game.

Shiran's Pamesani Arena Map
by Mark S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 04/29/2014 22:49:56
A free map of a gladiator arena. Anyone can draw (or trace) a circle.

Not everyone can imagine the animal and gladiator cells below and beside the arena.

Five stars for a good game value.

HarnMaster Magic
by Mattias L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/24/2014 03:11:00
I love the Hârnmaster world setting. The rules aren't the easiest ones but supports the setting fine. Hârnmaster Shek-Pvar (Magic) is a coherent rule system for spells and magic items. A lot of focus is on players designing their own spells and the existing ones serve more as examples than a finished "grimoire". If you like the magic of Tolkien or GRR Martin, you will enjoy this. If you're more a boardgame/class level/d&d player this might not be what you're looking for. Strongly recommended, if not only for the new interesting take on magic and spells.

City of Shiran E14: Bull Ring Tavern
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/21/2014 10:47:16
This nice little write-up describes a tavern in the City of Shiran. As always, it is embedded beautifully into the setting, with little details that bring it to life and a few adventure hooks thrown in.

This is no ordinary tavern. It lurks unmarked in the cellars of a warehouse, but is popular with local working folk and with members of the nobility who have a taste for low-life and blood sports for the Bull Ring boasts a combat arena in which dogs, rats, cocks, badgers and men fight. Fighters can make good money, if they survive victorious, and of course betting on the outcome thrives.

The normal residents of the building sound decidely unpleasant types, indeed the entire tavern is ripe for clearing out by decent and upstanding citizens. If your party, however, has more disreputable tastes they may find it a suitable watering hole and a place to make useful contacts.

There is a page of descriptive material about the tavern and what transpires there, floorplans and room descriptions and four hooks to get the party involved with the place.

City of Cherafir D5: Clothier
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/18/2014 07:54:24
You'd never think there was so much to write about a garment shop, but this is filled with little snippets that make this small but prosperous establishment fair spring to life!

This is a very speciast place, an ecclesiastical robe-maker's shop - a broad minded one, they cater to several faiths - providing the very best in vestments and other apparel to the well-heeled religious. Fine embroidery, gold thread, silks in delicate and rare shades, it's all here. Perhaps there's the odd hidden secret as well.

Crammed into a scant two pages are a wealth of background detail, a full plan and description of the premises and several adventure ideas involving the shop and its inhabitants.

It is this level of detail that makes a place really come to life, a sheer delight to have even if your characters walk straight by without a second glance... and if they don't, why you have every last detail at your fingertips, whether that high-level cleric in the party wants some ceremonial garb or if they want to get involved in any of the adventures described, or one of your own.

Larani: Order of the Checkered Shield
by Daniel K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/26/2013 06:36:38
This supplement, for me, has been long anticipated. The fluff gives a great depth to Western Harn and the political situation there. The overview of life in this military/religious order is helpful without being burdensome. The game mechanic expansion is very balanced to allow the building of PCs or NPCs who are apart of the order.

I can't wait for Lady of Paladins.

City of Shiran
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 11/02/2013 13:03:31
This excellent resource provides an overview - and plenty of detail - about Hârn's smallest city, which is renowened as the pleasure capital of Hârn: somewhere characters are likely to relish visiting, as well as finding plenty adventure and entertainment to be had.

History, economics and politics are described, painting a picture of a functioning, thriving yet corrupt city, where simple transactions can be overshadowed by a complex web of client-patron relationships that can be baffling to outsiders... yet flout them at your peril! Nepotism and patronage are rife, even the law courts do not escape... and virtually every crime can be settled by paying a fine.

There is a map of the city, situated on a bend in the river Thard, with descriptions of the various districts and notable locations to be found there. Each district has a more detailed map of its own, with notes about the businesses and other places of interest within that district - perfect for planning your visit and accommodating those players who want to know all about where they can find the goods and services that they are after. There's loads of those little details that make a place really come to life within your alternate reality - memorable locals each with their own stories, abitions and plans who provide a real sense that life here continues even after the adventurers have passed on elsewhere. Who can forget the lazy scribe whose scrolls are of low quality because she cannot be bothered to prepare them thoroughly, or the tutor who is so popular that mothers offer to sleep with him so that their children can get a place in his schoolroom?

An establishment called the Crimson Palace is described in detail: this may be a comment on the average adventurer given that it's an upmarket brothel! Still, should your characters fancy a night of negotiable affection, all the details you'll need are here, from the layout of the premises to notes on the courtesans that will wait on them hand and foot. Even for those not wishing the more, ah, intimate pleasures, there is much enjoyment to be had, the kitchen and cellar are first rate.

For those with other ideas in mind, the next section gives an equally-detailed account of the Pamesani Arena. Gladiators and animals perform here, and there is plenty of detail about the 'backstage' areas should the characters have occasion to visit as well as of the arena itself - which is big enough, it is said, to accommodate all the citizens of Shiran should they wish to attend a show. As well as fights, theatrical performances are held here, and it can be rented for private duels. The facility is owned and managed by the Order of the Octagonal Pit, whose temple is housed here.

For those of a religious bent, the Temple of Halea is covered next. This goddess, the Queen of Pleasures and Self-Fulfillment, is popular with merchants and nobles, and beautiful women, and has quite a following here in the Pleasure Capital of Hârn! Worship includes singing, feasting and mass orgies: unsurprisingly attendance at the main service once a month is good.

Just reading through suggests several adventures, especially if - like me - you happen to like city-based adventures. It would also provide a good place for adventurers to relax and enjoy themselves, especially if they have some money to spend!

Innkeepers
by Mikael H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/26/2013 00:49:04
As all products from Columbia Games this is informative, perfectly layouted ... and expensive. The modular style of Harnmaster makes it easy to switch in these focused articles iwhen needed in a campaign, it is also easy to use in other game systems when those fail to cover any little minutia that tends to pop up from time to time. So if your players (for one reason or another) decides to start up an Inn, this is an excellent starting source for creating the framework for that. Tho an expensive one, I did mention that didn't I.....

Larani: Order of the Checkered Shield
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 09/05/2013 11:31:16
Based in Menekod Castle, widely held to be the key to the Kingdom of Kanday if not all Western Hârn, this order of knights and men-at-arms is the militant arm of the Larani faith, being sponsored by the Order of Hyvrik.

Members of the order are easy to spot, with red and white checked (chequey of twenty-two gules and argent if you're a herald) shields and white surcoats (knights have a checkered border, squires wearing plain white ones), with red cloaks. They are one of two fighting orders devoted to Larani, a state of friendly rivalry exists between them and the Order of the Lady Paladin... but there is somewhat less harmony between different factions within the order itself.

The history of the order, well woven into the history of Hârn itself, is laid out as well as the current situation. The present grand master or Chabla is introduced, a formidible fellow.

Like many such orders, the members follow a schedule of prayer, meditation, worship and combat practice. Both men and women may serve as combatant members, serving a period of training as squires before achieving knighthood - unless they have already been knighted before joining the order. About one third of the order are knights, the rest being men-at-arms. Holdings are quite extensive, but there also is provision for wandering knights - knights errant, I suppose - who seek adventure outwith the confines of the order's establishment. This may be a good option for player-characters interested in the order.

As always, the detail is excellent and leaves you ready to play a member of the order or involve them in the day to day activities of your plot.

Dyrisa #6: Temple of Larani
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 09/05/2013 10:43:07
If you have the Dyrisa Castle product, you may have noticed a large building about which the notes say "A temple of the Order of Hyvrik. Since its completion in 715, the archbishop spends much of his time here."

Do you want to know more? Then have a look at this - because you get a full and detailed history of the temple along with floorplans describing every last inch of the place AND notes on the main priests who work here.

Now should your adventures lead the characters to Dyrisa, they will be able to visit the temple and meet the resident clerics, consult the library (if they can gain permission!) or attend worship in the Hall of Ritual.

If you are at a loss as to what to do here, several adventure hooks are provided. However, it is a delightful reminder of how everyday life goes on everywhere in Hârn no matter what the party may be up to... and is a fine example of how to detail one establishment within your world.

Larani: Order of Hyvrik
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 09/05/2013 10:25:02
This is a delightful and detailed account of the history and present activities of the Order of Hyvrik, which is a clerical order devoted to Larani (the goddess of chivalry and battle). Primarily a missionary order, they also sponsor the Order of the Checkered Shield - there's a book about them available hereabouts as well!

The detail is phenomenal, embedding the order into the history and politics of the setting. The leadership is discussed as well as their doctrine and practices, the saints and relics that they venerate and how the order is organised. Someone wishing to play a member of the order, or the GM wishing to have them playing a part in whatever is going on, will find all that they need here.

Members of the order serve as ordinary priests within Larani's church hierarchy as well as being missionaries or dwelling in one of the abbeys maintained by the order. They also may accept appointments as chaplains within noble households.

This presents full details of a thriving part of religious life and - as well as being a fascinating read and something you may well wish to incorporate into your game - is an exemplar of how such a document should be presented.

Telen Castle
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 07/10/2013 12:15:59
Situated on a major road and beside a navigable river, Telen is more than a castle, it's a complete settlement within a partial wall with all the teeming life that you might imagine.

Replete with details from the local lord's amorial bearings to the history and economics of the township, everything you need to make it come to life in your alternate reality is here. It's a market hub, they quarry stone and it is an administrative centre for the region. Plenty of reasons for your characters to visit or at least be passing through - and there is enough going on here to keep them occupied should they wish to get involved.

There is a detailed map for the GM, keyed to a list of significant locations, as well as a full-page player map. Map enthusiasts will enjoy the maps of the surrounding area as well - all geographically sound complete with an ox-bow lake that provides part of the settlements defences (and probably some fish as well!).

It's a splendid detailed resource, with that air of reality that lets you picture the place bustling away with or without your characters.
