Magpie Codex RPG - Core Rule Book Reference PDF's
by Arthur R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/30/2009 13:56:09
I had high hopes for this game, but I found myself very disappointed. While reading it, I got this pervasive feeling that what I bought was playtest notes for a game in the making. The rules are poorly organized and poorly edited. It is unclear from the start how far afield these rules take d20. While I have seen ogl derivatives stretch the rules to great effect, they did so in a decisive and explanatory manner that ensured the reader that you did not need a core ruleset to reference against the changes present within.

I wrote the author for clarification, and received a response rather quickly. This will be, I imagine, the game's saving grace - an active response to gamer demands and complaints, and a willingness to complete what is essentially nothing more than copious notes of an in-house system.

Admittedly, I gave this a cursory read. At this time, that is all Magpie deserves. This game poor presentation has regulated this ruleset to the trash bin, until such time as a more polished and cohesive version of the rules are made available. I would have rated this game only 2 stars, had the author not been so quick in response to my questions, and earnest in engaging me in dialogue.

The Magpie Codex: Quick Play Rules
by Lora A. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/24/2009 21:24:11
Magpie Codex is an excellent game for gamers who don't have the time to invest in 3-volume rulesets. While there are some minor flaws in this printing of the game, they are easily houseruled over or made up. Race, class, monster, and magic item creation are reduced to a simple set of self-balancing equations to ensure that your new creation is at an appropriate level. I plugged the formulae into FileMaker and can now crank out a character in a minute or two, a new monster in less than five minutes, and a campaign in, well, a lot less time than many other systems out there would allow. Before FileMaker, however, the creation process wasn't very long, either. Five minutes tops for a PC.

It's a great system for a veteran DM to teach to total newbies. I recommend both the Quick Play Rules to whet your appetite (and for the Rat Lord adventure), and then get one of the bundles. You won't regret it!

Magpie Codex RPG Core Rulebook
by DIMITRIOS K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/04/2009 10:15:07
I want to say that Magpie Codex is for me one of the best role playing games I've ever played.

There are two files, one black and white for easy printing and one full color file, which is the best. The artwork inside the book is excellent.

The character creation takes 10 minutes. There are all the races and classes you know from the D&D games. There is a campaign world that has its own races and classes.

The system takes all the good stuff from d20 game and makes such an easy RPG, you can learn in an hour or less. You could say that all the rules fit in ONE page!

You will need all the dice from your D&D game(d20, d12, s10, d8, s6, d4) to play this game.

The characters are levelling up to 10th level. There are no feats or skills, but there are some very practical stats with the names:
Feats of Agility
Feats of Prowess
Feats of Persuasion
Feats of Knowledge
Feats of Perception.

The rules are very easy to read and learn. There are easy to use tables for creating your own races, classes, treasures and monsters. There is a small bestiary in the book and spell lists for all the classes. But they are so easy to read and use, not like the d20 game.

There is a free adventure and the Doom sword campaign you can buy.

The game has its community for news and other stuff.

There re two print versions of Magpie Codex: a black & white and a full color version, you can buy from the publisher’s webpage.

I'm very pleased with this game. Now I can play D&D adventures with 10 minutes preparation.
I've bought both the pdf and the full color print version, which is amazing. It is a very HIGH quality book!
Now I'm waiting for the Bestiary and the other expansions.
