Resnet's Spellbook
by Sean H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 04/22/2012 20:37:51
Resnet’s Spellbook provides a wide variety of new spells and there are some good ideas here, especially the new bard spells, but it is a mixed bag.

Resnet’s Spellbook is a spell sourcebook for the D20/OGL/3.x Fantasy written by Quentin Hudspeth and published by Hudspeth’s Games. A variety of other formats are included, .mobi, .epub, along with pretty, printer and screen friendly PDF versions so you should be able to find a version that you can read comfortably.

Resnet’s Spellbook contains what it says on the tin, a book of new spells, seventy-five of them. It starts with an introduction to who Resnet was or is, a wandering bard and sister to a powerful wizard, and suggestions on how to use the book.

The 75 spells run from level 0 to 9th level, and covers all core class and a variety of proprietary classes from WotC (Beguiler, Duskblade, Hexblade and Warmage). The product says that an OGL version of the Duskblade, called the Dawnblade, is available on the Hudspeth Game’s website but I could not find it.

The majority of the spells are combat related, as is usual, and many are variation on existing spells (such as Adamantskin, a better Stoneskin) and are higher level (20 of the spells are 7th level or higher). Most of the spells are solid if not very exciting, though the 0-level spells are all simply better than the existing ones. However, the new bard’s spells are quite good from the various Voice spells that inspire various emotions to the humorous damaging spell, Resounding Sneeze. One of two of the spells (like Wit’s End) look overpowered so do not use any of the spells without looking at how they will play out in your campaign.

Caltrops

This entertaining system-neutral supplement offers two games that you can play with d4s. Incorporate the games into your fantasy campaign using all the flavor provided, or just play them for fun.

Caltrops
by erathoniel w. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 06/12/2010 14:00:55
This is original. It's got a lot of background that is interesting, but not necessary. It is basically a time waster for in between rounds, and I think it's pretty high-quality. The presentation is professional, and the games are well described. It's not perfect, since it's so simple and could use a little more, but it's priced right.

Hey, thanks for the review, Erathoniel. "It is basically a time waster for in between rounds..." Heh, heh. That sums it up pretty well from a certain point of view. And that was the goal — a little bit of flavor that was easy to learn and simple enough to implement quickly so as not to divert too much time from the plundering of the dungeon. Plus, the rules are simple enough you can remember them readily for a distraction before a session, while you're waiting for the GM to get his butt moving!

This is a great little supplement for GMs looking to add some flavor for characters, especially the betting kind. It's a short read with two simple dice games that NPCs may be playing or more interestingly that your players can play to pass the time.

Some of my players aren't as into the roleplaying portions of the game and end up heading off to the local tavern for some gambling. Though I'm sure I could have come up with some games for them to play rather than a simple skill challenge, this supplement gives two good examples with the background that goblins often play these with marked caltrops. A little fluff and a little crunch. My kind of supplement. Break out the d4's and ante up.

"A little fluff and a little crunch." Exactly what I was going for. I hope the balance pleases the average customer. There was great temptation to over fluff. Thanks for the review Neil. Q
Playing the Market
by Devon K. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 06/09/2010 12:39:42
Playing the market is a handy little supplement. At 15 pages, it's a breeze to read. The text is well written and easy to understand.

At first, the mechanic to determine availability and price of items seems very simple and not very special. But once it begins to get into determining the scarcity of an item, that's when it really shines! The system for Modern/Future is understandably more complex, but it also determines how much time will be needed to obtain an item.

I downloaded both PDF versions that were available and was pleased to see that one is formatted to read on a computer screen and the other is formatted for printing. That's a very nice plus.

This is well worth the price and is a wonderful supplement for those gamers who want to add in a little more uncertainty to the in-game shopping experience!

Thanks for the quick turnaround on your review, Devon. I'm glad you liked the supplement. I was afraid it was one of those ideas that was too simple to sell, but I'm glad the nuances are worth the price. I hope you have as much fun using it as we did making it. Q
