YotZ: A Survivors Guide to Risen America - Issue 0
by Anton S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/08/2007 12:21:40

A nice intro into the horror survival rpg genre. If I play a game in this setting, I may get more of these. And you can't beat the price.

Master Plan: Starships One
by Sean M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/08/2007 01:49:00

A pretty good product for use with minis.

This is similar to Master Plan: Starships Two product. The contains two deck plans for fairly large ships which I think makes this a good value. One of them is a carrier. Unlike other deck plans out there, this is actually oriented correctly; so that the decks are perpendicular to the direction of acceleration You don't need to use lame fake gravity excuses if you don't want them. The other nice deck plan is a large passenger liner complete with a pool and a large dining area (re-enable lame gravity excuses). The deck plans are well thought out and even include bathrooms so you don't need to make up lame excuses about where to put that... er just dump it into space.

My only major complaint is that the color scheme between the different plans is uniform and can make it kind of uninspiring. The art style (with a few exceptions) is good for settings which are like modern day... but in space. For example BSG, Traveller or Firefly.

Master Plan: Starships Two
by Sean M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/08/2007 01:30:41

The short of it is that this is a pretty good product.

It provides a good mix of deck plans for different types of starships great for use with minis. The largest deck plan, Retribution Class Carrier, has a large variety of sections that can be recombined into something completely different which is what I did; creating a personal cruiser for a diplomat. The style is largely drab grey with a few nice high tech looking sections.

What I didn't like about it was the lack of variety in style. Most of the computers look like they are from 1970s. Everything is gray (well one of the ships is very dark gray). Most of the other items in the rooms look very non-futuristic. I would expect a few ships that have that nice sterile, yet menacing white look to them or perhaps that hi-tech beige ST:NG,but there is none of that. This seems good for settings like Traveller, BSG or maybe Firefly.

Master Plan: The Village
by Tony K. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/06/2007 05:59:45

I purchased this product because there are very few offerings for use with skirmishes around villages or small forts. The houses are also small which allows everything to stay on a normal sized table. The houses are roofed - there are no interiors. This is fine by me as interiors would make the skirmish map far too busy. Overall I am very satisifed with this product except for one small niggle. It appears that for some reason my printer has printed out the tiles at a slightly larger size. Therefore I recommend that you experiment by locking the aspect ratio and reducing the size to 95% to get true 25mm.

I only noticed this issue because I was combining this product with Skeleton key game's Wilderness tiles, and I place all the tiles on a Crystal Caste rubber grid map. Unfortunately the Village tiles don't fit on the map that well.

This product is also not up to the same cartography standard as Skeleton Key gamers, but it is colourful, functional and applicable to any genre. However don't let this discourage you buying this product, as it fills a welcome niche away from the 1001 tileset offerings about caves and dungeons...

StockArt Covers: Leather Bound Book III
by Joseph Q. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/26/2007 01:22:56

I found the art easy to work with. The time savings you gain by using this depends upon your need for covers but I found this product useful and worth the money. Even if you modify the heck out of the art for final production, it provides an easy "plug and play" method of generating quality covers quickly. - I have 6 of these collections and have various covers from each used in up-coming product offerings. The only down-side is your products look very similar to other publishers works (since many people are using these) and you need to Mod like crazy to create a clearly differentiable "branding" of your work... because many people judge an e-book by it's cover.

YotZ:Survivors guide back issues 0-3 [BUNDLE]
by Kelsey M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/21/2007 23:18:26

I normally dislike all the little expansions that a company comes out with. I've been burnt too many times with material that is too limited or full of rehashed junk.

This is not the case with the YotZ back issues 0-3. The stories are great to read (as with all the YotZ stuff) but the extra materials, such as the relief station map or charts for scavenging items, is great.

Even the information given on the city that the narration takes place in is easily ported to any North American city.

Now if only they had a bundle for the remaining issues.......

Dice and Dramatics
by Sean H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 07/06/2007 00:00:00

(Revised) Dice and Dramatics: a D20 Guide to Better Role-Playing by Ben Mowbray and published by Ultramyth. It is a seventy four-page product (seventy after covers and OGL) with a simple and easy enough to read layout. The art is not the best but it is on theme and interesting. Two versions are provided, the full version and a printer friendly version (which, oddly, keeps the art in).

It is a book of advice for role-playing, it uses the OGL?s races, classes and alignment to frame the advice but the majority of it is still useful for any game (though Chapter 4: New Spells and Equipment is obviously geared to D20 but it is only 13 pages of the whole).

The book starts with an introduction laying out the aim of the book, in a nutshell, to improve roleplaying. Chapter 1 follows and looks at the various OGL classes, giving suggestion of how each might act and giving suggestions on how to personalize them to a player. Various reminders of the important things in a character background a player might want to consider as roleplaying hooks. Hints for things that can be done to improve roleplay and a few random table to spur ideas. Nothing terribly new or innovative here, but good useful material all the same.

Chapter 2 is advice on role-playing in game, how to use knowledge of the game to improve roleplaying and how to avoid using meta-game knowledge to the detriment of the game. Additionally, tricks to encourage roleplaying and suggestions of things that might be interesting to roleplay (casting spells, using skills).

Chapter 3 deals with the classic OGL races and gives suggestions on roleplaying ideas and hooks for the standard PC races as well as for several monster races and the effects of templates.

Chapter 4 is new equipment and magic, including a considerable amount of clothing with which to personalize the look of a character. The magic is most useful low level (often cosmetic) effects, some very amusing things.

Chapter 5 is helpful advice for the DM without whose assistance roleplaying will often be difficult. Useful reminders, know your players, know the characters. Advice on setting the scene, using props and music to reinforce a mood and other good ideas. Solid, helpful information and discussion.

If you primarily enjoy the roleplaying aspect of RPGs, you will find some useful tools and ideas here to enhance your experience.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
