it's acceptable quality, but a little more expensive than it should be. You get very few models.

ROMA AETERNA - Gladiators 1
by David W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/15/2013 19:23:19

They say it is bad to judge a book by its cover, but the cover of this PDF caught my eye, and I found it striking!

I was only AFTER I read the title did I realize it was PERMES's work! One of the best hand-drawn artist in the industry, his work never fails to satisfy. The scope, perspective and scale are unfailingly accurate, and the multiple color options are perfect for games with characters at various levels, or games that may have multiple players that use the figures, with player using a different color (player one uses blue, player two uses yellow, etc.).

This set offers many high-quality figures for a competitive price. I am an advocate for PERMES and his artwork, and if you purchase this set, you can see why it would benefit you to purchase his entire collection.

Medieval Musicians
by Anne T. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/28/2013 22:17:16

Have your adventurers ever had anything to celebrate? Perhaps they've started out their adventure at a village fair, a medieval feast, a jousting tournament, a masked ball, or simply in the better brand of tavern… then you need this set. Or perhaps your bard falls on the foppish side, and needs a few changes of clothing and/or instruments...
With bright colours evocative of the period's stained glass, illuminated manuscripts, and tapestries, Permes here rolls out every musical medieval entertainer you could ever need, in wondrous variation. He's also included a framed stage on which your musicians can perform; in theatres, fairs, castles, etc. The figures are well-drawn, with the right level of detail, nice line quality, proper poses, well developed character, and variations in colourways and accessories. There is a page dedicated to each type of musician with the numerous options available, illustrative artwork, and the 3D paper craft stage.
If this set caught your eye before, but you hesitated because it looked ready to deploy whole armies of minstrels from your printer, then fear not. The artist responded to a recent request for a quickstart page, so that those overwhelmed by choice, or those lacking time, ink, or skill, could print a single sheet including a couple of each figure. He's also added a gong and beaters, so that you can end your sessions (or begin your goblin invasions) with a bang ;)
This was the first of Permes' sets that I paid for (I began with his free ones), but even after more sets this one is still my favourite, hands-down. I don't know of any other commercial paper miniature or standee set that fulfills similar roles, and plastic or metal minis would cost you far more in materials, time, and effort to get figures only half as good looking as these. For NPCs that might see no more than a half a session, yet provide wonderful --even essential-- flavour, it's great to have such a set as Permes' Medieval Musicians.
Now if we could only talk him into publishing an orcish marching band to really break up the party, as he teases in his product pictures… ;)

Cost: 5/5 for value (9 core figures with multiple variations in accessories & colour = 92 minis, plus a 3D papercraft stage as BONUS)
Quality: 5/5 for artistic skill, numerous variations, full front & back art
Utility: 5/5; while a niche set, it is one that nothing else fills, and the figures are so great you'll look for ways to work them into your campaigns.
Overall: 5/5

Ancient Warriors Set 1 - Hoplites
by chris h. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/12/2013 11:16:23

I do like this product. The figures include some active poses and the colouring and style is great for card soldiers. Quality draughtsmanship.

However, the poses are not much use for creating a phalanx, which one would like to do with hoplites....

Only sheet 3 ( 1 of 6) comes close to allowing this. Sheet six only has side-profile figures so the phalanx is a bit unimpressive from the front...

In addition no figure has a spear ready to use over-arm. Maybe a design problem , but it makes all the figures look tame and parade-ground-ready rather than fighters. A few figures stand front-facing but with a totally static pose. The kneeling men are ...odd. Maybe could be used as marines on a ship.

The biggest fault is that most figures have 'Boeotian' shields. It is highly uncertain these were ever used in reality, so most of the figures here are rendered fit only for fantasy use unless I spend a lot of time in Paint/photoshop with them.

The quality of this product is let down by poor choice of gear on the figures and poor poses. Is the artist a gamer ? Probably not.

Last point. Make some cavalry ! The Macedonian set is beautiful. Some Greek cavalry and maybe even a general and some musicians would be well received I am sure. (I note the superb 30 years war range also totally lacks cavalry.....?!)

I want some good hoplites to fight the Macedonians and the Persians !!!! Just changing the shields would have greatly increased their useability.

by chris h. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/12/2013 10:59:46

These figures are very good. Colourful and accurate enough to satisfy all but rivet counters.
However, the set is not much use without cavalry. Please produce some cavalry or one cannot really field an army. Some barbaric light infantry would also be nice.

Easy 2.5D Ruins and Accessories
by Steven C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/05/2013 10:52:22

I had found this in a compilation of files someone posted online. Now that I've printed it off and used it, I realized it's well worth paying for, especially since it's so cheap anyways. The pictures are easily modified in your paint program of choice to build whatever you need. Purchased it and I recommend it to others.

ELVES Set 1 - Forest Ambush
by Alastair M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/16/2013 06:42:09

Probably the cream of the Permes fantasy figure range so far, this set shows off both the scope of what can be achieved with paper miniatures, and the quality of the Permes artwork and design. That artwork alone is superb, with clarity and precision in line and colour, the forms all anatomically correct and nicely animated, with complete front and rear views. Armaments for the troops are roughly half bows, including both command figures, half a wide range of melee weapons. While billed as Elves, aside from their pointed ears, not visible through hoods and helmets on many, these figures could equally pass for fantasy humans. Perhaps most interestingly, except for ten too heavily-robed and hooded to tell, the Elves are female, so could be used for mythological Amazon-type troops as well. No two are quite the same, thanks to variations in posture, colour scheme, weaponry or kit, while if you need more options, there are spare shields and shield fronts to add as desired, plus one figure who can be customized as a standard-bearer or a different warrior.

Besides the humanoids, there are four sabre-toothed big cats, all posed in mid-leap, one grouped with a humanoid Beastmaster, two near-identical (there seems to be a subtle difference in fur colour - or maybe that's just my printer!) with separate small scenery pieces to add that they can be leaping from, and a larger grey cat with optional 2D feathered wings. There are also nine other 2D scenery items from, in decreasing size, a felled tree with its trunk, another fallen trunk, undergrowth, rocks and bushes, down to a large boulder, along with three shields set in the ground as a wall, and a wicker screen for similar use. I'd have liked more of these shield-walls and wicker hurdles. The shield-wall page has a range of optional three-shield-group faces, but no further backs for example, which seems something of a rare oversight, if a fairly minor one.

The only real problem with the set is there are no figure bases provided. These may once have been available on the Permes website, but that seems (April-May 2013) to have vanished into the ether. The designer does have a blog still, in Polish only, which for non-Polish speakers is hard to navigate, so my recommendation would be to pick up a range of different sized bases free from the One Monk paper figures website instead. This is chiefly because the One Monk base textures can be freely downloaded from there too, and you will need some to create your own bases for the three largest scenery pieces here, which are 90mm (3½ inches) up to 130mm (5¼ inches) long. I'd guess many paper figure fans will have these to-hand already, so this is probably just something to be aware of, rather than a major difficulty.

Overall, this is a beautiful set, showing real care and thought in the figures and scenic pieces, a credit to the designer, and a challenge to match or surpass in future. More please!

Husaria - Polish Winged Hussars 1
by Giorgio G. P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/17/2013 02:29:29

A paper minis' perfect set. Complete and accurate figures' historical drawing, great colors, good variety. Possibility of make small changes with the addition of shields, banners, and 2.5D wings ... A little jewel set, really!

But the first eight pages, with map, brief history of this legendary military formation that dominated the battlefields of Eastern Europe for over two hundred years, description and drawings of each piece of armor and weapons, combat tactics ... make this product not only a set of paper figures but a small historical handbook about this legendary military corps, that should not be missing to any wargamer or military history fan.

After the second set, with other information and news, I hope that the author will also produce some enemies' sets (Turks, Cossacks ...), with the same quality of this, and then he pass to look in the same way other historical famous military corps ( roman legions, hoplite phalanx, spanish tercios ... )

EASY Sci-Fi PORTALS and MOD-KIT
by David W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/07/2013 06:50:36

PERMES once again delivers a new and original set of terrain! Beautiful and imaginative, this set of portals are both familiar in style, and refreshingly original. Whether your figures are traveling the far reaches of space, transporting back in time, or entering a dark dimension, these portals have it ALL!

Aside from the premade construct, there is everything you need to customize your models and make them however you see fit. You can make inserts that slip into the center of the portal, changing the appearance (and thus the destination), and even have small bits of sprues to decorate them and make the unique.

This set has unlimited potential and is LOADS of fun! Brilliant set!

Ancient Warriors Set 4 - Macedonian Cavalry
by PEDRAZZI G. G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/03/2013 03:16:20

This set introduces the Alexander's cavalry in Permes' "Ancient Warriors" series ( previous sets are Hoplites, Persians and Macedonian infantrymen ). There are 4/5 basic figures. But weapons, mounts, helmets, colors' change ... doesn't regret this number and the twenty figures that there are allow to have a good quantity for any game ...

Important point is that the historical representation of these figures is perfect. In design and colors. And the set's opening pages offer a very respectable artistic addition. A real treat for eyes.
