The Phoenix Barony (S&W White Box)
by matthew j. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 01/07/2017 21:43:08

A nice little setting for Whitebox with plenty of neat ideas, loads of NPCs, and great write ups for numerous locations in the setting. The author provides plenty of places and interesting people for your players to visit and interact with, even provides a handful of evocative pieces of art - all done in a nice old school style. At only $1 this is a complete steal.

Sometimes as you search through the library you may encounter some beautiful pieces of work. The Phoenix Barony it may be a tiny campaign setting but a labour of love. Don’t get fooled by the few pages as in these pages there is a piece of a soul. Thank you for sharing.

A lot of good ideas for scenarios. Not always bank robberies. Probably more true to things that happened.

A lot of good material to add to your Shooting Iron games, all in one place. looking at the way these characters are presented will be a great help to those who want to bring their favorite movies or dime novels to the game table. The cannon will be very useful when I game scenes from Major Dundee.

I like this add on a lot. The scenarios are well thought out and illustrated. I really like the artwork in this book, too! The mine scenario sounds like a lot of fun. I can't wait to try it out soon.

I highly recommend getting this supplement to go with the core rules. This supplement has a lot more townsfolk you can add to your posse!

This is a really great game. The rules are simple and easy to understand. The game play is fast. It is everything you could ask for in an old style western war/skirmish game. I really do recommend getting the Shooting Iron: Davestown supplement to get all the townsfolks to go with it. See my video below for a gameplay video and review.

GREAT ADDITION to the Shootin Iron system. Not only do you get a host of new Townsfolk to add to your game, but the Big Damn Heroes Special Abilities table opens up the possibility of easily creating more experienced posses with unique features.

Shootin Iron

I set up a small town tonight with two players, one a veteran gamer, and the other a newcomer. After a few minutes of skimming the rule sheet, they played an entire game without consulting the chart. Play was fast, after two turns of moving into position(if everyone is pistol armed, it helps to be about two feet apart. with a few rifles, three feet works well). Weapons went empty, wounds were taken, people fell off balconies, there was a fistfight...everything you could want in a western! In less than an hour, the game was over.

This game is very basic, but the Davestown Gazette add-ons give some good ideas, and most gamers will soon be coming up with their own modifications and scenarios. I highly recommend this game to anyone looking for a fast easy Western or Civil War skirmish game.

Shootin Iron
by Paul W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/29/2015 09:35:27

Despite its compact size Shootin Iron has a lot going for it. It's designed as a scenario driven game which will allow you and some friends to play to a conclusion in a short amount of time. It's perfect to introduce newcomers to tabletop gaming as the Western tropes are kept intact and the core mechanics are simple. The inclusion of townsfolk as special abilities is an original idea that allows special rules to come into play without overburdening the core rules and keeps each player's posse unique. It's very easy to include your own townsfolk if the supplied list isn't to your liking and more are given in the regular gazette supplements. There is a simple experience system which sees surviving characters improve their skills. All-in-all a decent game, exceptionally good value, attractively laid out (all but one of the spelling mistakes have been corrected in the latest edition and no doubt the remaining one will have been fixed by the time you read this) and well worth a look if you fancy some six gun action.

Shootin Iron

An interesting start, particularly aimed at the beginners market as there is not enough depth to keep a seasoned gamer interested. Looking forward to where this project goes. There are some grammatical and spelling errors besides the implied ones! Would certainly suit the purpose of introducing a new table top gamer who is interested in Hollywood style westerns.

I like to support the independent small scale designer of games, without which they will not get the chance to show what they can ultimately achieve. Not every new idea has to go through 'fund raising' channels!

Great little game. You can throw together two opposing gangs in under 5 minutes and be shootin' up the landscape. The straightforward system is ripe for fan additions from other Wild West RPGs/skirmish games including the author's Shotguns & Saddles RPG.

S&S: Spirits & Spurs
by Bill D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/21/2013 19:58:19

This is SO COOL!

A great way to introduce a little Weird West to SnS (or other western games, if you work it a bit). This supplement allows you to play a small posse who are akin to the Men in Black, fighting demons and such that the common folk refuse to believe are real. It's a great way to add just a touch of weird west without it becoming overwhelming. (or it could, if you want).

Again, Dave's deft touch of using familiar tropes well but innovately so it doesn't feel cliche.

Shotguns & Saddles Old School, Old West RPG
by Bill D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/21/2013 19:54:33

Another winner from Dave Bezio!

Clever character design that is class-less yet archetypical. Innovative yet familiar alignment and other d20-esque elements make the game a breeze to learn.

The setting (as such) characters and things make great use of the Wild West tropes without being cliched. The game is more crunchy than X-plorers, but still rules light IMO, allowing story and player to player tabletop fun to take precedence over rules lawyering.

A great read, and a great game!
