Ptolus Deluxe City Map
by Julian J. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/22/2013 21:08:03
The good:
I printed the 66 pages, on heavy weight paper.
The alignment is 11 pages horizontal, by 6 pages vertical.

The final product is extremely nice to view.
It is 82.5 inches in width (1.5" under seven feet across) and a little over five feet in height.

The bad:
If you don't want to tape/glue it, to a wall in your gaming room, this is a bit of a project.

I elected to use 'Backboard', and picked up two 4FT x 8FT pieces, then cut one of them into two sections 2.5FT x 8 FT and 1.5FT x 8FT.
Then used very liberal quantities of (school) white glue to overlap the 2.5 FT piece across the 4FT x 8FT and 1.5FT x 8FT pieces.
Then applied weight to the backboard and covered it with a tarp (did it in my driveway).

I opted to reinforce the glue (which held very well, after a week of ugly rain and cooler temperatures) with 16x 3/4" screws.

The 66 pages also needed to be cut.
There was close to an inch wide border around each page.
Staples, in the photo center, had a cutting machine... but the cuts aren't exactly perfect on every piece as you kind of learn to use the cutter as you go.
The pieces of the map are close to square/flush with each other, but it is not absolutely perfect.
It would have been nicer if they had come without the border around each piece.

I glued the pieces onto my assembled backboard.
And used a tape gun to go over the 'seams' to ensure the edges were all 'down' along the backboard.

Overall:
Ptolus absolutely rocks as a setting.
Having this fabulous visual aid, is great.

If you've not tried the Ptolus setting, do yourself a favor and do so.

If you running Ptolus, this set of maps is a phenomenal aid to your game.
It is easily the best prop our group has ever had.

2e Adventure Tiles: Labyrinth Core Set
by Chris H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 03/14/2013 15:23:24
The 76 (!) 6" square tiles in this set offer you a myriad of straight, diagonal, and curving corridors and small (up to 3 x 4) rooms with which you can create a wide variety of maze-like dungeon layouts. Although it’s part of the new 2e Adventure Tiles series, this set gives you the ability to create more “old school” dungeon layouts than any previous SkeletonKey product. Fiddling with these tiles takes me back to fiddling around with TSR’s old dungeon geomorphs. Excellent art, creative layouts, and a generous selection combine to make this a fantastic printable tiles product. If you’re already heavily invested in the older style of SKG dungeon tiles, don’t fret; three of the tiles in this set help you connect the new 2e-style tiles (with stone walls) into your old-style tiles (with black walls).

2e Adventure Tiles: Labyrinth Core Set
by Billiam B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 10/16/2012 13:01:10
I really like the art and ingenuity of Skeleton Key's 2E Adventure Tiles Labyrinth Core Set.  You get a whopping 73 small square tiles.  There are two main types of exit - and a mixture of curved walls with straights.  The light grey browns will give you a maze reminiscent of dusty classical settings or from the films like Labyrinth or Barbarella, whilst still fitting within grey castle environments.

As with many geomorphic designs, some referees may not like the fact that players can see beyond the walls to an inaccessible part of a tile, but I'm sure that a creative DM can find an explanation to allow for this meta-game awareness - perhaps just a sense that there's a hollow chamber or corridor beyond the wall - all the party need to do is go around the next corner to get there... - which is pretty much what mazes are about.  Certainly, the visual impact and compressed nature of the tiles mean that a maze will feel less laborourious than elongated zig zagging corridors.  It might be a bit of a struggle to run 4E D&D encounters in such small areas, but many other FRP rules should be okay.

Good looking, professional and inventive.

Great artwork. The tiling neatly ties together all of the various blocks in a way that's clever and convincing. Sadly, as presented the file is a bit hard to work with. You would need to print out individual pages and, I assume, tape them together to get a workable map. It would have been nice if it had been offered in a format that was more conducive to printing out larger maps in different formats. Luckily it doesn't require a lot of technical savvy to get around this issue. I'll soon have an awesome 4'x8' trench run for my Star Wars: X-Wing miniatures.

A good buy for $4. Simple, yet varied enough on large boards to avoid repetition of the greeble surface. Tiles connect seamlessly if you keep the shadows going in the same direction. While is looks a bit simplistic for what it is, this is to its benefit in my opinion. I too would like to see some laser turrets as a mini expansions for the play surface. I would also like to see some simple greeble structures to put into play as blocking obstacle terrain that serve no other purpose than board dressing.

After a long and frustrating string of notices of fantasy releases, finally, something for the vacuum eaters.

Assume this review is colored with some bitterness.

This product released coincidentally with a large company game, so assume that that also colors the discussion somewhat.

Firstly, all gray tones, which seems a negative, though it actually prints well on our high speed B/W laser at work, so saved on color toner. Does fill the page at that, though.

Ten images of flat area and five of the trench mean those who hate repetition of even simple patterns should be fine. Also, these are 4x5 two inch squares on each tile, so you could even randomize a bit more, watching out for structures that bridge the squares.

Not sure I understand the "Print any 5 of you(sic) favorite tiles twice to create a 40 inch by 40 inch play surface"; I gather they mean 10 sheets, which would not give a square unless you cut off some edges (not a big issue; is 40 x 40 that game I mentioned?). Do you have to mirror the patterns along the sides of the trench for it to fit an unspecified universe, ergo "Print...twice"?

Still, seems a bit simplistic, perhaps even a rush job. Wouldn't seem to be too much to ask for places for laser turrets, or an end cap for the trench with a target to 'stay on'.

Still, nice to see Ed get out of the dungeon for a bit, and I will be putting these to use.

This seems like an elegant way to represent and scale to different levels of power a common folkloric and fantasy image. One or two inconsistencies in stat blocks, though the intent is clear.

2e Adventure Tiles: Dungeon Encounter 01
by Chris H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 08/15/2012 02:00:09
Given the long gap between the previous 2e Adventure Tiles set and this one, Dungeon Encounter 01 turns out to be a little disappointing. Ed Bourelle’s artwork is as good as always, and the tiles should prove useful, but I can’t describe them as exciting or inspiring. Basically, this set gives you an 8x8 room that serves as a kind of crossroads or connector to various other SKG sets/layouts. With three different tiles in each of four different positions, you can get a good bit of variety from them. Nothing really suggests any story ideas or nifty terrain features, however.

2e Adventure Tiles: Dungeon Encounter 01
by Billiam B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 08/12/2012 09:39:10
Today I'm also drooling just a little over Skeleton Key Games's 2e Adventure Tiles: Dungeon Encounter 01 They're a good-quality easy-to-use set (no fiddly layers) - good value for $3.

The art is clear, textured, detailed with just a hint of a tribal magic design and yet generic enough to resemble a part of any dungeon setting. Since the 80s I've always preferred floor plans where the grid is actually part of the flagstone design - it always made the environment more "immersive" visually speaking - which is exactly what we have here. The 6-inch tiles, with wide margins, should print well on any printer without any need for rescaling.

The individual tile layout is specific -usually an entrance on one side and an open area on two sides- so that a large room area is always created with four tiles- but tessellations mean that many compelling layouts are possible. The inclusion of stairs and transitions between levels is a nice touch. Perfect as an encounter environment or "just-passing-through" on your dungeon crawl.

Nice work. Very professional. Good value.
