While I couldn't quite convince my book club to read Dinocalypse, I did manage to get a group together to play this recently. I just got my shipment of the Deck of Fate, and wanted to give it a spin. My group loved it. We generally play very humorous games, and this was right up our alley. I think it provides a very nice introduction to using Aspects (which was new for all the players). The constant choice of locations, and benefits/problems with each of them really got their brains wrapped around it, and by the end of the game, they'd all asked to change at least one aspect on their sheet, not for more bonuses, but to make their characters more interested in the story. It was awesome. Only beef was that with all the chaos in the city, the heroes got a little distracted, and it took them awhile to focus on some cohesive sort of plan. Would download for free again, and you should too!

Played this as my groups first introduction to Spirit of the Century and it was a complete blast. It worked perfectly as a hook to get my group interested in the Fate mechanics and Spirit settings. None of has had read Dinocalypse prior to playing this adventure and it was still accessible and fun. Now some from the group (me included) are picking up Dinocalypse Now to read and help flesh out details from further adventures we are going to create in this world! This also led me to pick up the PDF of Strange Tales of the Century to help with building adventures and fleshing out the game world for my Centurions.

Evil Hat - keep up the great work, keep that pulpy goodness coming! Drivethru - great website with a great interface, really easy to get free and pay content and keep everything organized, this is my go-to website for digital format RPG info!

When I run games at conventions, there are a few guidelines I use. The first is that the scenario I've chosen to run is exciting. Nobody wants to try a game they're excited about at a convention, only to have the GM run a boring encounter. I want you to fondly remember the events of the Con. In Dinocalypse Now, you've got dinosaur-riding gorillas from another dimension invading the good old US of A! That's a plot players will remember.

The second thing I look for is simple pre-generated PCs. While there is something to be said for letting people make their own characters in a system they want to try, it's not an ideal situation when you have a four-hour time slot and want to fill it with as much action as possible, and you never know if they're going to fit well with the scenario as-planned. Dinocalypse Now comes with three sample PCs, generated to allow room for player modification in-play. Author Brian Engard picked good archetypes, too: the Two-Fisted Detective, the Silver-Tongued Archaeologist, and the Clairvoyant Scholar. I would have liked three more to fill out the table, but it's pointed out you can make more just by varying the characters a bit.

Lastly, I want a concise beginning/middle/end to the scenario, and here is the only weak point of the module. The potential Goals and Missions the characters can choose are only a tip of the iceberg of possibilities here; this is because the adventure is a tie-in for the novel, so the main action is focused there. I think with a more obviously dramatic end point this would be an easy Con scenario to run. It's really better used as the launching-off point of a home campaign, and if I was purely interested in modules for that it would be a solid 5 stars; sadly they won't let me leave 4.5 stars, because with the addition of a more obvious target for the player characters, this would be a slam-dunk.

I'll start off by saying that it was tons of fun. Ran it with a couple adults and a couploe of kids, and everyone was able and willing to appreciate it.

I think that it was a phenomenal introduction to playing FATE, and, specifically, Spirit of the Century. As a GM, it gave me a better idea of what I should be trying to do for my game sin preperation and world-building. I think it serves it's purpose better as an educational tool than strictly as a game scenario!

The other aspect (teehee) that I really appreciated was the manner of pre-gen characters that were supplied. Just a line about the character concept, 3 skills, and 3 aspects, giving a player a shove in some direction to speed things along, but still alowing them to make their character their own.

All in all, it proved a valuable and effective tool for testing the waters of FATE, so to speak.
