Player Character Record Book
Publisher: Kenzer & Company

I'm sure I'm not the only one with fine memories of the AD&D "goldenrod" player character sheets. Not that they fit half the crap that your character carried, especially if you had to do with a single sided photocopy. Still, they were worth their weight in gold and 10 times better then loose leaf paper.

Here I sit nearly 30 years later and you can print out character sheets yourself, on your own printer, and it's probably more useful then the old "goldenrods" were. You can make your own (way beyond my ability), find ones on the net, or you can try Kenzer Co's Player Character Record Book instead. Now, just so there is no mistaking, this is a 3.0/3.5/OGL uber character sheet set. It could probably be used with Pathfinder with little to know issues, but using with some of the more OSR styled games may lead to some inconsistances, such as with saving throws.

The spell sheets sheets and the NPC sheets are extremely useful. Heck, I could see myself using the NPC sheets as a DM, as I could fit 4 NPCs per sheet for easy reference. As a player, what few henchmen I had would probably have gotten a full PC sized sheet, especially seeing how we are printing these out for ourselves.

My main complaint is this is still set up like a dead tree product. There is no need to repeat the same pages that are common to each class grouping. True, its not costing extra, and it is easier to print a group of pages then a bunch of separate pages, but I found it slightly annoying, probably without any good reason.

My recommendation? One copy for the group and print it out for the party. I'll take the NPC/Henchmen sheets if no one else wants them ;)

(Aid) SRD 3.5 Revised (Full) Bundle

3.5 is dead. Long Live 3.5. This is probably, bar none, the best 3.5 purchase I have made. Sure, you can get the SRD online for free, but a nice complete PDF package is a pleasure to have.

Complete and well done, it does a fine job in presenting the 3.5 e rules.

Pricey if you already own all the source material, but a good investment if you play 3.5 at all.

Witch Hunter: On Silver Wings

First and foremost, I do not own a copy of the RPG rules, so I'm keeping my review to the story itself. I was immediately drawn in by the cover, which I find to be an amazing piece of artwork. It fits the story very well.

It is a very compelling story, which read very well even without me having a grasp of the system underneath it. It's hard to go into without giving up some of the story (and this adventure would suffer if the story were leaked). It is deep in roleplay with a nice horror angle to it and little is as it seems... if bugs make your players squirm this is a good fit.

Most of the paths the party make take seem to be covered pretty well. The Witch Hunters should have their hands full, but smart play should rule the day for them. I highly suspect a decent GM could convert this to run with the Solomon Kane RPG without too much effort.

As for the (virtual) physical presentation of the adventure, the layout is spot on, the artwork is professional and evocative of the story and I didn't notice any editing issues. A lot of adventure is packed into 32 pages (plus front and back covers)

48 page long Dark Heresy introduction. Nice presentation and a decent adventure. Overall a very nice introduction to the setting and system. But I'm biased - WFRP and 40kRP settings are some of my favorites. ;)

The Nine Towers (Savage Worlds Fantasy Grounds II Adventure Module + PDF)
Publisher: White Haired Man
by erik s. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/18/2010 20:42:30

"Learn the adventure, the setting, and the motivations of the various NPCs. Careful preparation should give the Gamemaster a deep enough understanding that the right responses will spontaneously emerge and make perfect sense for the situation." (lifted from page 85 of this 88 page Behemoth)

Better advice could not have been written.

Like most (if not all) of White Haired Man's adventures, Nine Tower's takes place in a grittier, lower magic setting them most fantasy games. Take the time to learn the background of the setting, Kith’takharos, as it will add your appreciation of the adventure.

As to the adventure. How to describe it without giving away the plot? This is from the blurb itself:

"The ruthless archaeologist-mage Lenar Hoyt has stolen the most holy artifact of the Bright Water Swamp Men. The tribe holds Kith'takharos responsible, and will destroy the village unless the Order of the Jade Leaf retrieves Tarshal'din's Shining Spear. As the Swamp Man warriors gather for the assault, Hoyt activates the first Teleportation Tower."

Hmm, that is much of the plot I guess. Still, in its simplest summary, the players are on a recovery mission. A timed recovery mission. Thankfully, there are multiple choices for the adventure hook, so it can be tailored more to the party as opposed to shoehorning them into the plot.

This is not a dungeon crawl, although there are rooms and corridors to explore at points in the adventure. It requires more thinking and less swinging. Traveling is the key here, much of it in non standard ways (teleportation anyone?). Some events can be quite deadly (falling comes to mind) that players have little control over (about the only negative that quickly comes to mind).

The use of sidebars for added background and other information is pretty close to perfect. It keeps the flow of reading of the adventure uninterrupted, yet allows one to pause for added detail.

My best undereducated guess is two to three sessions to play out this adventure on a face to face tabletop session, then add one more session for the time lost using FG2 (VTT games always seem to take just a wee bit longer to complete in my experience).

Whereas the PDF gives you a handy way to read the adventure, the FG2 module includes all of that and more for use with the FG2 software. Unless you are a Skype / Teamspeak / Ventrilo / or some other voice software user, the idea of typing out all the descriptions, color text, NPC chat and such can be overwhelming. A well designed FG2 module does all that heavy stuff for you - a few clicks of the mouse and you are moving right along in your role as GM. White Haired Man has done that for you.

The Nine Towers is a great insight in to how, or at least, how high one can strive, to make your own FG2 module for your own use. This is the example one should follow. Links are there where you need them. Need to find the handout of Tarshal'din's Shining Spear for your players? Its linked right in the encounter. Narrative boxes? Check. Tokens specific to the module that can be readily recycled into other game session or systems... or even, heaven forbid, a different VTT? They are there, waiting to be used. They are also very attractive. I happen to like the top down look that was used. Personal preference I guess.

4 stars for the PDF, 5 for the FG2 module... 4.5 rounds up to a 5 ;)

The Majestic Wilderlands
Publisher: Bat in the Attic Games
by erik s. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/05/2010 20:32:32

It seems like everyone has their own spin on the classic Wilderlands line by Judges Guild. James Mishler has his spin on the Wilderlands and now Robert Conley is giving us his vision with the Majestic Wilderlands.

So, what do you get for your 7 bucks. 140 pages full of gaming goodness for Swords & Wizardry (OD&D). Actually, just short of half (the second half) of this PDF gives you setting material that could be easily used in any version of D&D, its clones, heck, just about any fantasy ruleset - it is system agnostic.

The first 80 pages or so detail new sub-classes, spells, optional rules for your S&W campaign and the obligatory spin on the rogue class. There's a hell of alot of crunch for anyone that is looking to expand their Swords & Wizardry game.

Final verdict? 5 stars - either section of this book is easily worth $7 bucks on their own. Looks great on the Kindle DX too. Nice, clean and simple layout.

Kith'takharos Setting (OGL 3.5 Fantasy Grounds II Module)
Publisher: White Haired Man
by erik s. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/13/2008 17:56:35

Kith'takharos is a fairly unique campaign setting. Don't think of it as a campaign world, it is more of a micro-setting to be dropped in a larger world (assuming your players are concerned about the larger world and not just their immediate surroundings). Most if not all of the "fluff" (not system specific) info contained in this download can be found on the White Haired Man website. Game stats in this module is for the 3.5 rules. There is enough here to get a GM thinking about future plot hooks. It is, however, not your usual Forgotten Realms / Greyhawk / Kalamar/ etc. environment. It may not work for everyone so do yourself a favor and go to their website first and get a free view of sorts. At $3.50 this module is a bargain. Then again, the "crunchless" fluff available on the website is even moreso ;)

A Small Task for Appleview D&D 4th edition for Fantasy Grounds II
Publisher: DW Publications
by erik s. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/29/2008 17:20:43

Wow... what can I say. I was really looking forward to a good 4e adventure for FG2. Regretfully, this isn't it. Why? Maybe it's my aversion to bad character names, especially ones stolen directly from movies and tv shows. The banker? Young Mr Grace (Are You Being Served?). The name of the General Store? Wonky Willy (Willy Wonka anyone?). Ethel Murtz (I Love Lucy) and Joe? They are gnome farmers. There is a Guicci Bag of Holding and a Fendi Bag of Holding. There is an attack by rubber chickens.

Now if one wanted to edit out all the show stopping references to modern day media and products there might be a salvageable adventure in here. Both the artwork (used to reference some of the visuals) and the maps are passable for the most part. Or perhaps not. The first half of the adventure reads like a railroad... you even have a tool of bouncing fireballs to keep the party moving forward.

It IS useful if one decides to digest it as a reference as to how to build a complex adventure in FG2... I'm tempted to use it as a template, but not much more. It is a pricey template.
