Thulian Echoes
Publisher: Lamentations of the Flame Princess
by Jeremy F. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/04/2014 07:51:46

Below is the TL;DR version of a review I posted at http://takeonrules.com/2014/08/03/thulian-echoes-by-zzarchov-kowolski/

Zzarchov is crafting adventures that are more than backstory, set encounters, and random encounters. In Thulian Echoes, Zzarchov focuses on the knowledge transfer of in-game information to the characters by way of the players playing different characters.

I found the adventure inspiring and interesting. I both want to run the adventure and take the procedures and work on my own. So for my purposes, Thulian Echoes is a resounding “must have”.

Vornheim: The Complete City Kit
Publisher: Lamentations of the Flame Princess

Vornheim is a fantastic toolkit for building a decadent fantasy urban sprawl campaign. This short book packs a mighty wallup!

You should not expect this to be Encyclopedia Vornheim. It instead provides a skeletal framework and palette on which you can layer, via the tools in the book, your version of Vornheim. Its a bit of a Frankenstein's monster, tethered to the wire table, storm brewing, waiting for the bolt of lightning to ignite the life within.

Having already had a physical copy of this book, I wanted a PDF copy as well. The physical book is amongst my most treasured RPG books. It is a reliable source for inspiration, not because it is a complete setting, but because it evokes a richness of setting that could never be fully explored.

The Dashing Hero - A Dungeon World Playbook
Publisher: Liberi Gothica Games
by Jeremy F. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 09/11/2013 08:29:58

We've had problems getting campaigns going. We'll have about 2 sessions and then they falter. Last week, we started up another section and one of my veteran players was looking longingly at The Dashing Hero. He was hesitant to pick it. When asked about the hesitation he responded "I'm saving it."

The Dashing Hero gives the player so many tools to dive into the adventure, with a focus on getting the Dashing Hero into the action. While the other players, each of whom had characters with flight, were wondering how the Dashing Hero would quickly get from the ground up to the third floor our Dashing Hero simply laughed with confidence as he laid out a Plan of Action – a large desk had been installed in the nearby third-floor dormer, and the rigging was still there. With the flip of his rapier, the Dashing Hero was on the rooftop and ready to deal with the kidnappers.

While some may find these abilities to make such sweeping declarations overly powerful, I welcomed it. The session became richer as I got to thinking "Now why would the desk have been installed today…" This was a detail that never would've surfaced without handing more narrative control to the players.

Thornburg - A Dungeon World Adventure
Publisher: At the Table Games
by Jeremy F. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/30/2012 20:39:40

You get an evocative map of the village of Thornburg, a handful of NPCs with instincts and moves, a handful of described locations, and some advice and initial questions to ask the players.

The advice reiterates what Dungeon World advises; Ask questions. Lots of questions. And Thornburg provides a solid list of loaded questions to ask. By building on their answers a GM knows what the PCs are interested in exploring.

Thornburg then goes on to include a section on Fronts, but it is in worksheet format. I think this is a weak spot. For me, the Fronts should come out after the first session, not during. There isn’t quite a clear explanation of this section.

The final section is a list of locations and NPCs. Each location has a slice of the map, a description, and one or more NPCs with an illustration. The NPCs are an interesting bunch. Lots of odd behavior in these characters, but most importantly, the NPCs have fully fleshed out moves and very unique instincts.

Buy this if: You like village maps; You want a little kick to get your Dungeon World game going; You are looking for a village that has the potential for odd things lurking around the corner.

Don’t buy this if: You are looking for a dungeon crawl, looking for only non-human opposition, you aren’t planning on sending your characters through small late middle ages villages.

Moleskin Maps 02
Publisher: Chubby Monster Games
by Jeremy F. [Verified Purchaser]

I love maps. Ever since my first reading of Tolkien, maps have held a special place in my heart. From my cloth map of Ultima VI, to the Birthright campaign map, to the blue printed maps in the old TSR modules; maps permeate the hobby.

And Matt Jackson has been delivering fantastic maps. First he gaves Moleskin Maps I and now we have eleven more area maps in Moleskin Maps II.

Each map is two pages. The first page provides a small map and a worksheet for filling out the Location Name, Background, Key Locations, GM Notes, Wandering Encounters, and Major Treasure. The second page is the full-sized version of the small map.

As a GM you will need to do some work to populate the map; Then again, the GM is the best person to do the work.

Some of the maps are very simple structures with a few logical “rooms;” Others are more complicated structures with several rooms and passage ways.

If I had to name these locations I’d say go with:

  • Fault line cave
  • Bandit cave at the falls
  • Collapsed tower and cave stores
  • Fortification in the box canyon
  • Dwarf crypt
  • Shelter for the night
  • Owlbear den
  • River smugglers den
  • Pit slave quarters
  • Goblin warrens
  • Gladiator arena monster’s lair

Moleskin Maps II is a fantastic compliment for your GM toolbox.
