SUPERS Revised Edition

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

In the panels and pages of comics, it is often the hero's origin that molds them into someone that defies the odds and stands for Justice. Once set upon their path, these heroes rarely change as they stand the test of time and the unending call to action. This is not that story.

Building on rules created by Simon Washbourne, SUPERS Revised Edition takes the action and adventure of your favorite Super Heroic comics and slams it back down to your gaming table. Crafted by system experts Aldo Regalado and Rus Boyd, SUPERS Revised Edition take the rules you love and make them the rules you can't game without!

  • Unified mechanics mean less time in the book and more time in the battle.
  • New Powers and Aptitudes expand the scope of the game.
  • Apply Boosts and Complications to any aspect of the game.
  • Optional Rules are included to expand the game to your liking.

Don't stand idly by as comic book heroes steal the spotlight. With SUPERS Revised Edition: Build your Supers! Build your world! Be Heroic!

I have a question that has been bugging me for a while, but I am only asking it now because it has become more relevant:
How do weapon ratings work?
Let's say someone has Shooting 3D and a light machine gun (2D). Would they roll 5 dice? If so, do they keep the best 3 as usual, or does the gun make it an exception?
Or does the Light Machine Gun 2D act as a "power," letting the character make a Shooting roll and separate LMG roll?
The first option seems a bit more powerful than I would expect while the second option doesn't seem logical.

The short answer is they do not stack. You either roll one or the other. If a person has shooting, the rules assume he has the necessary equipment to work the skill (bow and arrow, spitball launcher and plenty of straw wrappers, etc). For a "rated" weapon, the rules are more about the weapon than the shooter.

As an example, Jack Hackerson has a 2D in shooting and a 3D flame thrower. Jack is keeping the bad guys down by using his shooting (2D). When they eventually get too close, he brings out 'ol Smokey and produces a jet of flame (a 3D "power").

Hope that helps!

That does, thanks.
As a related question (I'll stop after this one), would the rating limit the weapon? For example, the weapon is 2D while the user has 3D. Would the maximum effect be limited by the weapon rating, or do we assume that the user knows how to use it to greater effect?

That would be for the judge [gm] to decide. As written, you get to use one or the other during the course of a round. So as another example, our friend Jack, Agent of FIELD, has a kicked up shooty-McTooty pistol with a low caliber and insane optics (2D) and still has his Shooting 3D rating. During a hostage rescue, Jack is on the run with the unconscious hostage over his shoulder and turns to make an attack. Jack fires (Shooting 3D) and scores a hit, doing 1D of damage. The bad guy is still up, though, and takes a shot at Jack. Our boy uses his 2D pistol as a defense, shooting to throw off the other guy's shot. He scores high enough with the 2D pistol to defend against the attack.

That's off the top of my head, so I hope that helps. If you're looking for a better way to do gunfire, check out Search & Destroy by Stone Mountain Games, who we licensed to make the supplement for Supers!

The characters on the cover were created by Kickstarter backers who pledged at a level to get their characters illustrated for the front of the book. The same was true for the Alternate cover.

This video was a good video for teaching players how to play the game, but offered literally nothing in the way of gm advice. The section of the book devoted to judges offers absolutely zero advice on running encounters with supervillains, which is a huge oversight. I have literally no idea how strong to make a villain if i want them to be able to challenge my party.

Try using your own imagination? Does every rule book need to tell people how to play a genre? I for one do not want to pay for someone telling me how to run a supers game or how strong my villains need to be. I don't need a setting included in my rules either. I wish publishers would put all that in a separate book so I don't have to pay for fap.

I'm a first time GM for this system and I'm having a tough time adjusting combat for my heroes that makes it fair or somewhat challenging. I come from a D&D background, and needing some advice or help to make their encounters a bit even/fair. Any suggestions? Do I go off of Dice Rating or just go with the flow?

The trick is not to think of this like D&D where everything is a fighting mechanic. A good rule of thumb is to offset the potential threats the players face against heir strengths. Do you have a heroic quartet of all pulp level heroes? Throw in a super heroic threat. Do the players all have physical powers like wall crawling and super strength? Throw in a villain with crazy illusion powers. Don't forget the henchmen and mook mechanics to slow things down if the heroes are having too easy a time.

Comics have the best source material for crafting adventures in this game as the mechanic works well to have mismatched heroes vs threats scenarios. For EX: The brain (someone like Mr. Fantastic) fights off the ultimate brick (like the Hulk) with his intellect instead of his physical abilities.

If you have a specific thing that's tripping you up, you can always try us at the facebook group or on superscbr.proboards.com.

"Do you have a heroic quartet of all pulp level heroes? Throw in a super heroic threat."

Perfect example. I have a quartet of all pulp level heroes. When you say 'throw in a super heroic threat', how does one even create one to match the threat at hand? Did I miss something in the system that I'm just overlooking? I just want to make sure the threat at hand is actually a threat and not like a walk in the park. lol.

A great example for this is if you have a batch of "detective style" heroes fighting a "ghost" type character who has a supernatural ability to fly or soak damage from physical weapons. The heroes have to find a way to deal with it that might not be the norm (fire, some sort of mysticism, or maybe even spend Competency Dice won during a previous adventure to acquire what is needed).

I've only got one complaint with the system so far: Page 33. It says that characters start with 1D in all aptitudes. And in the chart below, it says that 1D is the equivalent of a Bachelor's Degree.

So we're to believe that our characters have a minimum of a Bachelor's degree of training and skill in every skill imaginable?

More of a benchmark than hard and fast. The idea of bachelors, masters, and PHD was to give the player something to compare things to. We should have used untrained / lucky rather than bachelors, but hindsight is 2020. I would be interested to hear how it plays at the table for you.

I think I'll probably shift the table up one value each as a houserule, with bachelor's being 2D, and keep 1D at a high school level education and training.

I'm reading the book stem to stern to learn the system, and in the example on page 69 the book says Olympia will regain her non-stone state once she recovers from 0D reaction to 1D reaction in 10 minutes time. However earlier in the book it says going from 0D to 1D takes an hour.

I'm guessing that should also be 1 hour for the transformation recovery?

If you look at P.19 - it says that Resistances below 0D take an hour per point to recover. 0D and above recover at 1D every ten minutes. Since Olympia's reaction was knocked to 0D, she would recover from the attack in ten minutes.

It occurs to me that I haven't finished the book, but since I'm already on this road, in for a penny...

I am loving the heck out of this system. I think I've finally found the perfect superhero game for my play style. So now... How do I convert all those M&M, Icons, and FASERIP characters I've acquired in my search to Supers? Is there a supplement or something? Thanks. Amazing game!

Supers! offers a great blend of traditional and narrative gaming. For example, there are real tactical combat choices as well as tremendous room for narrative creativity during combat. You can all-out-attack with your killer attitude if that suits your character.

I love Supers! RED. It is a great game and I think it really manages to capture the feel of comics. If there is any negative at all, it would be that it seems to have no support whatsoever. I would have liked to see more books for use with the system, but it looks to me like it's been abandoned.

Hey there!

Thank you for the high praise of our game. I will respectfully disagree that RED has been abandoned. We have 3 adventures out by us, Scene Stealers. Stone Mountain Games have taken Supers to the next level with Search and Destroy. Fainting Goat Games have published adventures using their Improbable Tales Line. We have a slew of 3rd party folks who have released characters monthly. We just released our SKULL supplement in conjunction with Zenith Comics (backers got it first). And the setting Extreme earth and the maxi rulebook, Super Villains handbook all have Supers Support. RED is alive and thriving!

SUPERS! Rev. Ed. hits the sweet spot for detail and playability among supers RPGs! I have played many supers games and written a few myself, and I consider SUPERS! to be among the best I have worked with. My players love it! The appendix also makes the rules miniature or counter friendly, so folks who dig the grid can enjoy slightly more tactical games too!

You can build simpler characters in minutes, and more complex builds take less than 20 minutes or so. Mook and Companion rules allow for hordes of minions and loyal sidekicks!

Options allow you to tailor the game's lethality to go from Bronze Age style games to the brooding Iron Age '90's feel.

This one has it all!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
