It's not about killing monsters, looting treasure, and gaining experience as you delve deeper into some mad archmage's architectural folly. It's about surviving in a loathsome, terrifying environment where nothing is quite as expected. It's about atmosphere, gloom, and despair. It's a thriller.”

Just wanted to note to anyone looking to purchase this, if you're coming from Ruins of the Undercity or Mad Monks of Kwantoom, Castle Gargantua actually /does/ generate a map! Every room your roll mentions the dimensions, so if you are just trying to plot it out as the game describes it to you, you end up with a really cool dungeon map just like you would in the other two games.

A Kabuki Kaiser Classic.

I ordered the hard cover version of this book and it is missing pages 37-42. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

You're the only one that I'm aware of. In such situations, you should contact the Drivethrurpg customer support as it's probably a glitch from the printer's side.

We ran through about half of the adventure (over the last few months) before the party was distracted ... but they'll be back :) Seriously a great product.

Awesome book, and very happy with the purchase (I chose the hardcover + PDF). Any chance you could make a printer friendly version available? I want to print out the worksheets at the back (rather than writing in the book itself), and it would be brilliant to either have them available as a separate download, or put layers on the PDF, or just a version of the PDF with a plan white background.

Also, a quick question: You say that the castle is about the same size as the Palace of the Parliament in Romania. Am I right in telling my players that's more-or-less 800 feet by 900 feet?

That's a little bit less than 800'x900', but almost so yes, that's right-ish. Thank you! You could maybe print the worksheets as they are for the moment, it's been a long time I have a printer-friendly and/or Lulu revision in mind, but it's tanking big time under new juicy projects.

Dammit.. I bought this book (Hard Cover + PDF) without looking too deeply and instantly regret it. The "OSR" in large bold letter suckered me in.. I assumed I'd get the same "beautiful" minimalist B&W aesthetic one usually sees in OSR products of this type. So.. Printer-Friendly option.. PLEASE??

Colored background - even as minimal as these are - DRAMATICALLY increase the cost of printing at home which, let's be honest, is why many people buy the PDFs because they're trying to save a buck. Yeah. I know I bought the hard copy as well in this case.. but I've got this thing for megadungeons...

A "printer-friendly" version of the PDF will cost roughtly $10.67 CAD to print/bind at home. It's cheapER, not cheap, so I the cost includes comb-binding and vinyl covers to protect from spills, etc.

However, colored backgrounds BURN through toner and increase the costs to roughly $23.98. That's almost the cost of just buying another hard copy outright...See more

Another awesome offering from Kabuki Kaiser. This is weird enough while still holding that traditional fantasy feel of a Fairy Tale gone off its rocker!

This probably would work with a bit of imagination, but it's not specifically intended for solo play as Ruins of the Undercity or Mad Monks of Kwantoom are.

There are mini-maps for all the Gold sections, these are more like your traditional adventures. Otherwise, everything is determined randomly and sprawls on in a theater of mind kind of adventure. It's the players duty to maintain the upkeep of the map.

Didn't you buy it? There are 5 maps of small areas (about 7-9 rooms each) and 2 maps of a single area each. These maps correspond to mini-dungeons within the castle.

It is, the stat blocks are thin and generic so that you can use it with every OSR system with minimum to no hassle.

Any chance the POD version will go to Lulu? RPGNOW's POD service can't seem to send out books without them being horribly damaged...I don't seem to ever have that problem with Lulu...

Not in a near future because Lulu and OBS have different formats, which means that I'll need to format everything again if I need to do it. I might but not soonish.

"The biggest dungeon ever published by the OSR."

Do you mean biggest dungeon or biggest dungeon?

Not big like it has 1,000 rooms. Big like this:
"Castle Gargantua is about the same height as the Empire State Building and the same size as Ceausescu's Palatul Poporului in Bucarest, a little bit over three million square feet, the same size as the entire old city of Venice. Its rooms and corridors are so huge that condensation clouds of mist hover within and that it rains inside sometimes. There are miniature tornadoes in the spiral stairs and strong drafts of wind when the corridors are slightly sloped. If a curtain would fall, its weight alone would smash a dozen men to a pulp.'

I dunno, the Patala Underworld of Arrows of Indra seems larger. It's basically the whole under part of the Earth

Or you could imagine megadungeons the size of a whole star system, but that wouldn't make them playable straight from the book without prep or give you all the details you need to run them.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
