ARES is a great and complete set of fantasy rules for 15mm or 28mm. One purchase gets you everything, and there are additional rules, errata, and expansions available free from the publisher's website.

If you want a set of fantasy or historical rules that has more crunch and a lot less randomness than Song of Blades and Heroes, this is what you want! Uses several sizes of dice and requires some mental arithmetic, so it's a good basis for building kid's number skills.

What a great game, I've been looking for a system like this for such a long time!

I've read and played almost all the fantasy/historical skirmish games out there and nothing has the subtlety, lightness and flexibility of this system. It's quite brilliant in many respects.

A little previous experience of wargames helps to get your head around the game concepts. The point sytem calculations for creating the stats for the figs is pretty straight forward to use (and it comes with a dozen army lists if you don't have the time to create your own or want to play it straight out of the box) but it's so worth it to be able to field any figure you have, even the most odd and dusty creature in the bottom of your miniatures box.

It's so flexible that I've heard that there are mods to turn it into modern or sci-fi without much dificulty. And I can see how easy that would be with such a smooth, intuitive and generic system, my mind is already running ahead and thinking how to adapt it myself.

Anyway, it gets my double thumbs up - I just hope they can add some other material for the game soon as I like their style!

cheers,
John

Another fine product from MJ 12. Lots of good source material for your gaming needs. Game is well though out.

LIKED: Lots of detail without being overly detailed.

DISLIKED: Have to roll different dice for combat. Can slow things down a bit.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied

This is a good system. They play fairly fast, and yet have enough detail that you can tell the difference between 1 figure and another. Magic is simple and not too powerful. It is also quite flexible as you can design both your own units, and spells for mages. The game plays well with or without magic being used.

The special rules for characters and even weapons make the game interresting and makes the use of tactics important, as it should be.

I have downloaded army list for Lord of The Rings from their Yahoo site, and am starting to use this in place of GW LOTR game.

The rulebook is very comprehensive and has easy to learn machanisms. The Army rules are a good bonus, although I think it has a strange selection of armies (goblins, hobgoblins and orcs, but no undead!)

MJ12 have an excellent reputation in producing logical, well written rules. For this price you really can't go wrong.
