I had the pleasure of playing this mod with the author at AetherCon and it was a blast! Since then I've played through this with multiple characters and experienced an awesome amount of variation from party to party as each group choose different allies. It's a fun, well written adventure that has many players reflecting on their alignment more so than most games and presents some of the better RP opportunities I've seen in AL play. I'd love to see a Tier 2 continuation of this storyline!

From a value standpoint, this is an incredible deal with the maps, tokens, handouts and other art assets to set up your Roll20 pages. Not to mention the module for our pals on the Fantasy Grounds side. :) This author's efforts set the new bar for quality on DMs Guild and provides new and veteran DMs alike an opportunity to set up quickly and share this epic 8-bit experience with their players. Nicely done!

This is one of my favorite Season 1 mods! An interesting mystery, rumors of a ship crewed by the damned, and an isolated village with its strange denizens combine into a varied adventure that culminates in ship battle against pirates. My only slight complaint is that the only combat encounter to change the pace of the 1st half can be circumvented which can make the game feel slower for certain types of players. Basically you might not get to any action until the last third of the 4 hours, so a hack-n-slash group may get restless, though a RP heavy group will probably eat it up and possibly make you go overtime. My group loved discovering that the ghost pirates were fake only to have the real ones roll up! Overall the lack of combat encounters can be forgiven due to the well presented mystery, story and RPing opportunites that make this mod shine. 4.5/5

DDEX2-12 Dark Rites at Fort Dalton (5e)

I liked the opening choice of encounters, which allowed the players some agency despite the short running time and makes the mod more open-ended in the sense that even the order of the encounters could shift. The options for secondary character motivations leading into optional downtime activites was a nice idea but I wish offered a little something more substantial. Some players liked their activity while others immediately stated they were saving their DT for something better. The combat was fun and has the potential to introduce Tier 1 characters to water combat which can be a shock. Lastly, it was nice that the mod plans for scavenging attempts and optional RP'ing investigating of the ruins of Fort Dalton, but I found with the running time of 2 hrs most parties won't have time to delve into those ideas. Overall I would say that this is fun 2 hour romp, but it felt like it needed a little streamlining to keep the pace. 3.75/5

Oubliette of Fort Iron is fun yet linear ride through a fantastical setting. A great idea for environment sets this mod apart from many others and a fun back and forth pace between combat and skill encounters keeps things lively. Our party welcomed the creature variety, environmental challenges and the unexpected return of an NPC from earlier in the season. 4/5

DDEX1-02 Secrets of Sokol Keep (5e)

Secrets of Sokol Keep presents an interesting mini-sandbox and provides good details about npc motivations, but what stood out to me was the different flavor of adventure than most modules. In the initial set up roleplaying is king as 1 question leads into another until it culminates in a classic dungeon dive. In my experiences running this module, I leaned heavily into the suspense, mystery and horror tropes and my party ate it up. A nice mod to change the pace on your players from a story perspective, and though the final dungeon was enjoyable it feels a little quick. Aside from the combat encounters being a little too vanilla, this mod still can bring it with the mysterious premise and great roleplaying opportunites. 3.75/5

DDAL06-01 A Thousand Tiny Deaths (5e)

After having the opportunity to play this 1st and then run it multiple times later (on Roll20), I can say that the difficulty level is a little higher than most Tier 1 mods, but is still manageable. That being said, the enhanced danger level made it more compelling for the groups I was involved in (both playing and DMing) and I found the players were still able to roleplay in the in-between moments of the dungeon crawl leading up to the boss battle. Run time has varied for me from 2 hours exact to 3hr and 45 minutes (This group wanted to RP the heck out of it and it was grand!)

From the initial ambush to the trap placement, I enjoyed the structure and pacing of the encounters as it created a bang of an opening, followed by a slow burn as the group delves further into the kobold lair and then reaches a climax during the finale. I found the final encounter to be close to that sliver of a perfect spot where there has to be real potential of risk, but not an overwhelming battle. If the suggestions for modifying the encounters based on APL are followed and the combat notes are looked at, I believe that the battles are balanced and fun. Overall, a nicely done mod.
