Critical Hits #26 - Perchance To Dream
Publisher: Legion Publishing
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/16/2004 00:00:00

This is an excellent mini-adventure with a dark bent. If you like dark fantasy, this is a good choice as it is written so that it can be made more nasty. The description and state of the village should prove pretty horrific to a party of good aligned characters anyway.

The PCs must stop a fugative sorcerer who is killing a village through their dreams to save his own damned soul. Guaranteed to make the arcane spellcasters of your group not take their abilities so much for granted and one that requires far more of character's thinking rather than the pluses on their gear.

In the Depths of Blackwater
Publisher: Ronin Arts

This is a good campaign-kicker product, one that you can use to immediately get a good starting locale with lots of interesting things for PCs to do. However, just be aware that you are still going to have to do a fair bit of work!

There are no NPC stats included and all the d20 material presented in the product is for 3.0 rules - not 3.5! There is also a fair number of very bad typographical errors. Constant notes are also made about other books to expand the Blackwater setting but none have been forthcoming. So, if you like Blackwater, be prepared to support it on your own.

Still, an interesting book and one that I don't regret buying despite the fact that I'll probably never actually use the material.

Big Time Professional Rasslin - Steel Cage Deathmatch Edition
Publisher: Team Frog
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]

There are only two downsides to this game: some really bad typographical errors and paper minis that are not to scale of the wrestling ring paper model that is provided (easily fixed by using a chess or checkers board).

Other than that, you have a fun little game that has quite a lot of replayablity due to being able to create new wrestlers (even some with bizarre abilities). This would be an excellent game for younger kids who enjoy the "sport" or for wrestling fans who don't take it too seriously.

Plus, at less than $3, the price is certainly right for what you get!

Road to Armageddon: Combo Pack

If you liked Twilight 2000 and are a fan of military science fiction, you'll love this. Extensively detailed and amazing in its scope, you can drop players right into the aftermath of World War III before things go weird and the players find themselves thrown in time to fight the battle for the future alongside their fighting comrades from previous World Wars.

The only downsides to this product is that there are no bookmarks for the PDF (and it is a substantial work) and the fact that you'll need to spend another $10-12 for the EABA rules from BTRC (also available here at RPGNow) to utilize the game.

Action! System Core Rules (Full Version)
Publisher: Gold Rush Games
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/29/2003 00:00:00

Okay I'll admitt that I only picked this up when it was being offered for a penny. I'm glad I did. Its a nice alternative to the slew of d20 material and is open to boot so you can do what you want with the system.

I hope more publishers take advantage of Action! If it can manage to hang around, I think it can fill a niche as a very viable alternative.

This is an absolutely wonderful item for any Arrowflight GM who gets the dreaded "adventure block" in which they can't think up anything and need some inspiration for their session.

All of the NPCs in here are top notch and you can design entire adventures around them that are bound to be memorable. This is easily worth the small price in the amount of frustration that it saves alone!

die! Die! DIE! The Family Game of Genocidal Warfare!
Publisher: Team Frog
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/29/2003 00:00:00

Very Risk like in play, this game does offer the advantages of a modular hex-based battlefield that will change each time the game is played and a tech level advancement chart that helps in production of units.

Don't believe the cover image though - the only troops in this game are various types of infantry you don't get any tanks. This game is a very good bargain for its price but I don't think we're going to see the two promised supplements as it is already at the end of the year and they are nowhere in sight.

Still, for only $2.50, it is a very reasonable value with a good bit of replay value in it. Recommended.

Critical Hits #25 - Lord Alex's Letter
Publisher: Legion Publishing
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/29/2003 00:00:00

The absolute best part of Lord Alex's Letter is the herald's shield - absolutely guaranteed to drive even the most patient PC crazy with its snobbery. The adventure itself is pretty straightforward with the PCs taking up the duties of a slain messenger.

Compared to others in the Critical Hits series, this one seems a bit short. A good DM should be able to expand it with NPC interactions but, if they're not good at handling social interactions, this will be a very short adventure for a group.

Portrait Pavilion 1 : Female Characters

I rather liked these, with that said, these are done in an anime/manga style of art. If you're looking for an Elmore to decorate your character sheet with, this ain't it. However, you do get a good variety of fantasy, modern and generic portraits so these drawings are useful in multiple genres. These would be a very good choice for anyone using BESM d20.

I recommend them but keep your bias towards artwork in mind before you purchase!

Critical Hits #24 - None Shall Pass
Publisher: Legion Publishing
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/01/2003 00:00:00

This could be a fun diversion for a group of PCs as they encounter a group of travelers at a bridge across a ravine. The PCs are challenged to a series of contests in which they place their own possessions on the line in hopes of winning some of the traveler's treasures. Naturally, the odds are stacked against the players either through circumstance or because the NPCs have an unfair advantage.

Its a good idea and some of the contests can get pretty dangerous, especially the fight with The Black Knight. All in all, a good buy if you're looking for ways to scam and otherwise frustrate your players.

Critical Hits #23 - Holes of Narrowsend
Publisher: Legion Publishing
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/01/2003 00:00:00

The premise is pretty neat as the PCs end up having to enter a series of lava tubes to prevent the digging of the monsters that have taken up residence there triggering the volcano to erupt, dooming a peaceful nearby village.

Again, if dungeon crawls are your thing, this is a very servicible entry. It has some unique value to it and should certainly be a worthwhile adventure to run if you are stuck for ideas or need a game to run on the fly.

Critical Hits #21 - Death at Spaporte

You get a double bonus with this product - not only do you recieve a pretty convoluted and interesting mystery for the PCs to solve but you also get a fully detailed Roman-esque bath which can easily be dropped into any setting.

I would like to congradulate Rob Clayton Jones, the author, who is obviously one devious bastard (and I mean that in a good way). This is one of the best Critical Hits to date and is definately a real value at its price! Players will be talking about this one (assuming they survive) for some time to come after going through this.

Critical Hits #22 - Pantheon of Pain
Publisher: Legion Publishing
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/01/2003 00:00:00

The heart of this adventure lies in a pretty complex puzzle that the PCs will have to figure out. If your group consists of players who enjoy puzzles, you'll probably rank this adventure higher than I. With that said, it has a pretty cool setup and some of the dangers they will face inside the abandoned temple is pretty nasty (and very likely to kill one or more of them).

It is, at heart, a standard dungeon delve but definately has enough little unique twists to it that it doesn't fall into the expected.

Critical Hits #20 - Trouble at Mille
Publisher: Legion Publishing
by James S. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/30/2003 00:00:00

The quality on the Critical Hits line seems to be increasing after a bit of a slump. The adventure itself is pretty straightforward for the most part but has some interesting elements such as an extortionist ogre mage and the evil mage who is bilking him for everything he gets.

Its an interesting idea and one that could potentially let the more social-oriented PCs such as bards shine as they could be drawn into tricky conversations with the town locals, the city council as well as the ogre mage. I recommend it.

Excellent! The setup for this adventure is a great one and there are lots of opportunities for misdirection and coercion/beguiling thanks to the villains. While still focusing on combat, there are some great opportunities in here for roleplaying. The notes for continuing the adventure past what was provided is a little weak but not unwelcome. This is easily the best one out of the Critical Hits series to date and should be a real challenge for the PCs.
