Book of Fiends
Publisher: Green Ronin Publishing
by Timothy B. [Featured Reviewer]
Date Added: 07/19/2010 20:12:05

Green Ronin updates their two books covering Demons and Devils to 3.5. This book also includes the Yugoloths/Daemons/Neutral Evil fiends.

Lots of really original fiends that can be used with any 3.5 compatible products. Writen by Green Ronin guru Chris Paramas and d20 expert Erik Mona. Over 130 new fiends and details on their lands.

The only downside is the fiends are not shown in color, which would be great.

l'article est un condensé en version 3.5 de deux anciens suppléments dont j'ai entendu dire le plus grand bien. Ludique et pratique.

Absolutely a first-rate product! RPG e-publishers should buy this just to note what constitutes high industry standards. First point: the product is fully bookmarked. Second point: the art and cover are of high quality...sales really are better when you make that extra investment, especially cover art. Third point: high editorial standards. I can count the flubs on one hand with a casual read through, and they are quite minor. There are also few if any technical flubs to the stats, a common probem that makes me grind my teeth. Finally (I'm running out of comment time, the writing is absolutely top notch, highly evocative, yet relatively succint; it is only as long as it needs to be to achieve the effect of representing the true vileness of the entities described.

LIKED: It also supplies a great quantity of Open Content, and provides interesting lower level challenges, as well.

DISLIKED: No complaints. A graphics-free text only version for reference printing might have been a nice addition.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
I bought this to get some more information on the exarchs of shadow in the Blue Rose setting. Some useful info is in here, especially the art is evocative.

Probably useful in d20 campaigns if one wants to give the whole demon topic a twist.

LIKED: the art

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
The classic sourcebook on Demons and Devils, with an all new section on Daemons, creatures with plots revolving around sin (specifically the seven deadly sins). This last aspect makes them all the more convenient to write plots around or give PCs personal involvement. New material has also been added to the other sections, and two new core classes, the thaumaturge and unholy warrior, are included.

LIKED: Legions of Hell is an old standby section, and Hordes of Gehenna is a new favorite.

I especially appreciate that Green Ronin took the time to apply errata to the electronic version (in this case, psionics has been updated to the 3.5/XPH version; the hardcover was originally written to the old psionics handbook where it was used.)

DISLIKED: Armies of the Abyss still is not my favorite section. To much of the material is hentai-inspired or otherwise gross or silly in an attempt to be edgy by including references to sex, and continue this trend with new creatures added in this version. (Living demon semen? Nothankyou sir, not in my game...)

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
