Extremely useable and rather well-written roster book. There are two pages of background material and GM-ing advice for each of the bad guys, making this supplement useful to any GM, no matter what superhero RPG system they are currently running. Great job, and highly recommended.

This system would not only serve as a great intro to the RPG hobby for kids, it could also serve to give more experienced players a fresh look at how fantasy gaming can be approached. There's a lot of flexibility here, and it's very easy to see how to take creative advantage of it. The "damage" mechanic built into the combat system is one of the most interesting examples I've ever seen in any RPG, period. I recommend this not only for those who want to teach kids how to play, but for anyone who is ready to re-examine how a fantasy RPG can be built.

This is a really fun, well-organized mini-scenario that would make for a pretty much perfect short intro to this system. There's humor, danger, mystery, and action, and all in a nice, tidy little package that would be very easy to use at the table.

Hollow World Campaign Setting
Publisher: Wizards of the Coast
by Maxwell T. [Verified Purchaser]

Interesting setting, but I felt that the "zones" separating the different tech levels were a little too much of an arbitrary plot device, and the whole idea just felt like lazy writing. Other than that one element, this was a cool read, and I can only imagine the reactions from players who had this setting sprung on them back in the day.

An absolutely great system. Light, flexible, playable, and easy to get into. Written in a humorous tone, but could be used for any sort of campaign setting. Kind of feels like a streamlined "Tunnels and Trolls" set of rules. Very much recommended.

World Of BEAN! Sourcebook for BEAN! The D2 RPG

This sourcebook strikes a great balance between "detailed" and "open to player/GM input." There's a ton of info here, and the world is very well established, but the opportunity to mold the world and to let the players discover it is not stifled by reams of overly specified minutiae. The World of Bean is fun, creative, and best of all, inviting to both players and GMs alike. Excellent work all around.

This is another fun, well-written adventure that should really let your players give the Bean! system a nice workout. There is a fairly strong element of railroading involved, especially in one major plot element, but if the players are willing to go along with in the light-hearted spirit of this game, that one element should make things even more fun than usual. I am really anxious to run these adventures with my group, and I am starting to get the itch to write some of my own!

A fun, well-written GM adventure that does a great job of giving players a chance to test out many aspects of the Bean! system. So far, I've only read it, but I plan on running this (and Gone to the Dogs) with some of my friends soon. There is some mild rail-roading that is written in to part of this adventure, but it's nothing that I think would ruin the overall fun playing through it.

Awesomesauce The Roleplaying Game Troll Hammer Edition
Publisher: Troll Hammer Press
by Maxwell T. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/21/2012 13:32:17
I tested the basic edition of Awesomesauce with a friend this weekend, and it was a huge hit. This edition adds a few simple ideas to the basic game, making things even more awesome without weighing things down too much. This game is all about imagination and freedom, so it relies a lot on the players and the GM to have a lot of the former and to be able to deal with a lot of the latter. For example, to create a new character, you simply name them, and the only stat they have is "Awesomesauce 1." That's it. Now, play the game. What your character can do with that one stat depends on what you said they were; a barbarian, a wizard, a robot, Indiana Jones, whatever. For someone like me, and (some) of my friends, this is the best system for our time-crunch laden adult lives. No pages and pages of rules to leaf through, no "does that bonus stack with this one?" questions, no "do you have a feat for that?" nonsense. Just pure, crazy, unfettered fun. Get it. It's free. And play it. (Heck, I wrote an intro scenario by drawing a primitive map of one dungeon room in 5 minutes and freestyling from there. It was great.)

SUPERS! The Comic Book RPG

In a field crowded with good superhero RPG's, this product really does a lot to earn its place in the spotlight. Simple, fast rules that are actually simple and fast, from character creation through to combat and beyond. I am a die-hard Villains and Vigilantes fan, and always will be, but this is the game that I am currently writing up characters and am just itching to play or run. There's just so much here for the price, and the community at the Zenith Comics board is very enthusiastic and helpful. Can't wait to see more from this publisher.

This is one of my favorite RPG discoveries of the last several years. Refreshingly simple, flexible, and yet it all feels rock-solid and complete. The writing style and the presentation are charming and informative, and the whole experience of even just reading the rules is downright fun. I am officially a convert to the way of the Bean!, and anyone who still thinks that a good RPG can be still be fun should buy this game without hesitation.

This is easily one of my favorite independent comic book series ever. The storytelling and art are very polished and well delivered, and the characters are all very engaging. It's fun, it's got action, some pathos, and is just very enjoyable all around. I can't recommend this highly enough, especially for those who are tired of the same recycled corporate superhero dreck. Awesome series, pick it up!

Oil Pressure

Just read through this and I have to say, if this is the sort of product that MHG is going to be putting out, then I feel very positive about the future of our dear, beloved V&V franchise :)

The cover art by Talzhemir is perfect for this product line, and I hope to see more of his stuff in the future, helping to back up Jeff Dee as needed.

As for the adventure itself, it's a perfectly written, light little encounter that could be used to introduce someone to the game just as well as it could be dropped into an ongoing game for use as a fun interlude. The presence of Living Legends stats is nice to see, too, since I know there are more than a few people who have those rules kicking around their homes (like me).

This product easily earns its top ratings from me.

Pewfell #02
Publisher: Porfingles Press
by Maxwell T. [Verified Purchaser]

Having just read the last trade paperback of Nodwick, I was a little worried about finding something to fill the void. Pewfell looks like it will do very nicely. This issue introduces a great new character in Lilypad, Pewfell's half-toad ex-college roomie, as well as cool concepts like Peace Patrol, Sales Demons, and the Hog's Nuts bar and grill. The format of switching between longer stories and shorter "strips" works very well again, and over all this issue expands very well on the foundation laid out by the previous offering. This is already becoming a favorite.

This was a very pleasant surprise. The format, alternating between long-form stories and shorter, 4-panel gags, really worked for me. The artist's style reminds me of classic Bode-family 70's era comic fantasy, but with a somewhat more modern touch added to it as well. I particularly liked the larger drawings scattered throughout, like the cutaway view of Pewfell and Tina's home, and the picture of Tina and her Wyvern flying off after pulling off a rescue. The characters are all charming and identifiable, which is quite the achievement for a first issue. I'll be buying lots more of these, I'm sure. Heck, I bought the first three just from looking at the preview files. Recommended.
