Creating a star map for your universe spanning campaign is tedious and somewhere inevitably becomes boring.
One more star system. Distance to other systems. Trade Routes. Planets, asteroid belts, gas giants...
A load of work if you want to offer some details.
But there is this nice tool that creates the basic system infos for you.
Wonderful!
Astro Synthesis is easy enough to get you started within some minutes but offers such a load of details and options that you can spend hours and still discover new stuff.
It takes some getting used to but it's well worth the time.

Full 3D mapping software for space. Lets you import stellar data as CSV files, exports to XML. Lovely stuff to play with your universe with! And very pretty too...

I went looking for a piece of software to map 3d fictitious starmaps and wasn't sure I'd find anything, it's one of those things that only roleplayers are really going to use. I was really excited when I came across this program, not only did it seem to do exactly what I was looking for, but I kept finding extra bonus features in it that pushed it way past my expectations.
Firstly, it can handle maps of unbelievable size and complexity. I've generated ones with nearly 20,000 stars, trade routes between them and full systems around each star with asteroid belts, planets, binary planets or stars, moons, space stations and probably more. It does slow the animation down a bit at this high a setting (at least on my computer) but still seems to work fine. That's way more than I could ever need for a space game.
Secondly, it has free plugins available to make it automatically correspond to GURPS: Space 4th edition, which is the game system I use. (I think I also saw a traveller plugin for it as well).
Thirdly, you can either randomly generate your map (that 20,000 stars map took approximately a minute to create) or deliberate place each system on the map. In fact you can even do both, randomly generating a galaxy as background and then deliberately placing the stars you want.
And finally there's all kinds of options for the GM to use this program for record keeping. You can place ships on the map, put GM Notes on planets and all kinds of things.
The more I play with this software, the more I find that it can do. It takes a little while to get used to the interface, but that's not surprising as there are so many options.
I am very glad that I bought this. Totally worth every cent.

THIS PRODUCT WORKS WELL ON WINDOWS VISTA.
I have one mild complaint: the pan and zoom controls, so essential to this software, are mouse-driven, and especially the zoom feature is a bit clusmy unless you have a mouse with a center wheel.
THat said, this product is simply amazing. A quick glance over the pdf instructions, and I built the Sol system with only occasional references to the instructions. Its easy to use, has depth you have to see to believe, and it will utterly dominate any space-faring game you will run.

A bit complicated, but fun to play with. Other than that, I don't have anything to say.

This is an excellent tool if you are playing a space campaign. It allows you to create systems easily, and even allows you to set up warp or trade routes very easily, and you can display it to your players on a monitor or print it out. My players really got excited over it.

An excellent application. With a background in 3d I had no problems picking up the interface and minus several bugs I've run into (Make sure you get the update from NBOS's website as it fixed the bugs I was experincing) this is an invaluable tool in my toolkit for documenting & mapping my game's homebrewed universe.
Highly recommended if you are a space buff, or just simply want to map it all out.

An excellent product (if a bit tricky to use at first). Once I got the hang of it I enjoyed using it immesely and found it an invaluable aid to gaming. I also have fractal mapper which is a big bonus and rounds out the set.

Excellent program, exactly what I needed! IT SHOWS exactly what I need to show, and is 3d! Does a WONDERFUL job!
LIKED: Everything! Graphics importation is particularly wonderful!
DISLIKED: Nothing.
Weeel...more specific star classifications would've been nice. Slows things down quite a bit when I have to look up masses for star classifications I picked.

amazing software, very useful, both for quickly creating random systems, and (with a bit of a time commitment) entering in data from an existing star map as well. I'm currently in the process of entering all the system data from the old alternity Star*Drive campaign book for my current game
LIKED: amazing visuals - one of the best pieces of software available for a GM that runs a lot of sci-fi games
DISLIKED: it runs a bit sluggishly on lower end systems

This is a great program. In fact it is used in game design for Future Nexus, for this is THE tool used to design systems that will work in the game setting. Hard Sci Fi requires this. Moreover, it will be used to develop worlds for short fiction as well that has nothing to do with Role Playing Games
