Let me begin by saying that I am definitely an Old School Gamer having GMed AD&D since 1979! I lost my old gaming books recently in a move and was going to replace them but decided to give C&C a try first. I'm glad I did. I absolutely love what they've done with this product. They've taken most of the issues I had with 1st edition AD&D and fixed them, yet managed to retain the flavor.

This product has a couple of negative aspects, but they are minor: 1) The actual prose style is, at times, painfully over dramatic. The writer really should have checked his usage of certain words and phrases before going to press. (One does not "don themselves in the accouterments of battle." One can dress themselves in the accouterments of battle or one can don the accouterments of battle...) 2) The core classes for the system are not all included in the light version. Though I can understand this, the exclusion of the Ranger struck me as rather odd. It didn't end up spoiling my enjoyment of the product as I purchased the full set within a few days of reading the condensed version!

Good product which I highly recommend!

Although I'm a great fan of C&C, the condensed version in and of itself is not a complete rules set. It does not contain the encumbrance rules. But, if you're looking for a handy PDF supplement your player's handbook, then this might be okay. Your best bet is to buy a second printing of the player's handbook from Amazon. That being said, this PDF inspired me to shell out an additional $13 for the second printing. It features the superior layout found in that addition.

LIKED: C&C rule set, though not complete

DISLIKED: Does not contain encumbrance rules. Would've preferred the addition of the ranger class.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Disappointed

This is such an excellent game system in my opinion. I hadn't played D&D for years... the last time I was playing it was with D&D basic boxed sets, and later with AD&D 2nd Edition. I looked at D&D 3.5e, and it left me scratching my head what the heck happened to the game I remembered. Castles & Crusades cut out so much of the complexity added in 3.0 and 3.5e, that I immediately fell in love with it. It is a beautiful marriage of the unified d20 system, with all the goodness of original D&D from back in the day. Two things I especially loathed in the new D&D, were the heavy reliance on miniatures and gridded maps for combat, and the tons of skills and feats you had to swim through with each character. Castles & Crusades provides elegant and straight forward combat that doesn't need require any miniatures... just your colorful imagination... and skills and feats are tossed out in favor of letting the DM making simple rolls with the SIEGE system on a d20 to figure out what characters can and cannot do... Its all simple and beautiful, and leads to fantastic role playing sessions that get back to the heart of the game and away from all the uneccesary garbage (in my opinion) that was added into the latest versions of D&D.

LIKED: Its D&D clean and simple, and will lead to many a fantastic adventure without all the micro management required in D&D 3.0 and 3.5e.

DISLIKED: Its a condensed version... so you only get 20 monsters, and some of the rules from the full book version of the Castles & Crusades PHB are cut out. Its great though if you want of taste of Castles & Crusades right freakin now! Then go order the PHB and the Monsters and Treasures books, and you have EVERYTHING you need to play old school D&D goodness for around under 30 bucks. FANTASTIC!!!

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied

Certainly more then enough to get started playing Castles & Crusades for experienced RPG fans and certainyl a more then adequate PHB for folks new to RPGs playing with more experienced players.

You get six classes and Five race,a slew of spells, an adventure and abotu two dozen monstes for them to meet in further adbventures.

LIKED: a relatively lite take on modern RPGs with a degree of oldschool faithfullness.

DISLIKED: There are a couple of minor omissions and mentions of things (usually within tables) that aren't in the book. A treasure section would have been a worthy addition.

Good intro to the game but too much info at the same time. My advise? - shorten it way down like GURPS does in their "Lite" version and slash the price. Then people will get more of a feel for if they like it and buy the full hardcover book without feeling like they are paying for the game twice.

LIKED: Good introduction to CnC.

DISLIKED: Too much information to be that useful to use on computer and too much to waste ones precious inkjet ink to print as well. My advise? - shorten it way down like GURPS does in their "Lite" version and slash the price. Then people will get more of a feel for if they like it and buy the full hardcover book.

A great introduction to the Castles & Crusades rules and an excellent value. The layout is SO much better than first edition books that it is not even funny. This is essentially the 'Basic D&D' version of C&C. You get player classes and races, combat rules, magic rules and spells, monsters and a sample adventure. Everything you need to start playing.

The only things missing for me were bookmarks, an index and some sample treasures and magic items. Other than that, it is a complete and neat little package. It's AD&D for the 21st century.

LIKED: It is a low-cost and surprisingly complete introduction to Castles & Crusades.

DISLIKED: No bookmarks and no index. I really would have liked to have some sample treasure lists and magic items.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
