Future Armada: Vanguard Station
Publisher: 0 hr: art & technology
by Shawn G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2008 17:29:52
The Future Armada series is awesome! Each set includes a detailed write-up of one or two ships, including diagrams, deck plans, and d20 stats. The deck plans are provided in a small-scale image so that you can see the whole layout of the ship on a single page, as well as miniature-scale tactical maps in both black-and-white and color versions. In addition, each set includes a handful of very attractive CG images, showing in action (in space, flying through the atmosphere, in a hangar, etc.).

Even if you're not a d20 player, the images and deck plans make these sets well worth the cost.

(Some of the ships reminded me a lot of a Firefly, so these ships would work really well in a campaign set in the Firefly / Serenity universe.)

Serenity Role Playing Game
Publisher: Margaret Weis Productions
by Shawn G. [Verified Purchaser]

This is a really nice looking book, with full color pages throughout (a printer-friendly version would have been nice). There are lots of stills from the movie supplemented by pretty good artwork. Unfortunately, the PDF does not have any bookmarks.

The system is designed to be fast-paced and cinematic, and it's not bad, though neither is it particularly great. It tries to do some things that Savage Worlds has done, but it doesn't do them nearly as well. I think many people will buy this book for the setting material, but ignore the rules in favor of their own favorite system. Savage Worlds would be a good choice, and many people have pointed out that the Firefly / Serenity universe would make a great setting for a Traveler campaign.

One glaring shortcoming of the rules is that space combat gets practically no coverage at all. There are some cool ideas about treating the ship as a character, with its own traits and advantages / disadvantages. However, there are no rules about how to actually use ships in a dogfight. (From what I hear, these rules are provided in a supplement.) However, on the plus side, the handful of ships that get detailed writeups are handled well. They fit the setting and the deckplans are great.

The setting information gives enough detail to give a GM a good feel for the "'Verse" without being too restrictive. Several planets are given a few paragraphs of description each, and there are a few pages of historical information. The glossary of Chinese words and phrases is a great addition.

If you're a fan of Firefly / Serenity, this may be a good book for you. On the other hand, you may already know all you need to know to set a campaign in the 'Verse using your favorite game system.

Mouse Guard: Fall 1152 #6
Publisher: Archaia Entertainment LLC
by Shawn G. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/02/2008 12:17:29
I really like the art in this series, but the story is a little sparse. There is so little text that you can get through each issue in about a couple of minutes, and none of the characters are really fleshed out. Many of the events of the series would have more impact if more time had been spent developing the story and characters. For instance, when one character dies, there's no reason to care since he had just been introduced within the same issue. The revelation of the identity of the main villain is treated as if it's a big twist, but this character had literally only been seen in a couple of panels half-way through the series, and was never mentioned again, so the dramatic impact was negligible.

If I had bought these at the original price of $3.50, I would have felt that they were a bit overpriced, but the art alone makes them worth the current $.99 price. (Also, they'd be good for kids.)
