Mythweaver: The Book of Heroes I

This supplemental book provides players with more options, including two useful races, and rules for new weapons. The Narglyn race is a nice change-of-pace from the half-orc races. In comparrison, the Narglyn races offers more potential than the more-familiar half-elf. My group found the additional companions to be enlightening, including statistics for a pixie and a pocket dragon. Information about new equipment seems helpful, but the meat of this product is its continued commitment to the game. There appears to be a strong drive for maintaining the game system's alignment, "ASP," and developing the character into a part of the on-going story. In this regard, the book is less like typical D&D Splatbooks, although it does have a lot of example characters/NPCs. At the pice of $1.95, the book is a must-have for mythweavers, to offer new NPCs and help characters navigate new changes. Although the book is only 16 pages, there has been substantial material to keep me busy reading and applying for days.

Mythweaver: The Splintered Realm
Publisher: Splintered Realms Publishing

Mythweaver: the Splintered Realm achieves what a lot of casual gamers hope to get in an RPG- familiar set-up (elves, dwarves, etc.), easy combat and magic resolution, and flexibility in character building through some unique, albeit subtle ways (perks and hero points). The gameworld can be as complex as the GM (Mythweaver) allows it, with more and more source material coming in suppliments and through the magazine. Get a copy through the bundle package, and layout the system to your friends. With all of the headaches currently surrounding a conversion to 4e from 3.5 (D&D), Mythweaver offers a more than a replacement system and a unique world ready for player feedback and molding.

Good: The inclusion of new races, new character classes, and on-the-fly spell casting, and signature-style combat moves change perception of the expected rules.

Bad: Four out of five classes are devoted to combat; there may be too much devoted to combat. More skills would be welcome, but may be found in other books.

Overall: Break-out Mythweaver for your friends and get lost in what you remember was good about D&D Red Box!

Mythweaver Magazine #1

The best thing about this magazine is that it has begun. The first issue would have room to improve (I would have liked to see something more about Echo City, for example.). I applaud Michael for his comments about the magazine's total page count: it's up to the fans, who help make contributions every month. I think the magazine is a great way to get more attention to the game. I'm curious to see what add-ons might go to the House at Winter's End adventure (but again, this might be up to the fanbase's contributions). The magic item article lacked some teeth, because I hoped for more crunch than that which was written. However, I like necromancy as a magic style, too, so my preferences may lie elsewhere. I think Michael has a strong guiding vision (perk? :) and has several months planned ahead of us.
