If you're looking to create a Perseus, Hercules, or Percy Jackson-type PC, then this guide will provide a good start. I found the racial power underpowered in comparison to the "canon" races. It's a daily power, as opposed to an encounter power, and just feels inferior to other races' powers.

On the other end of the spectrum, one of the feats at the paragon tier prevents a demigod from ever failing a death saving throw (unless penalties were in effect on the roll...I'm not even sure such a penalty exists). That could be pretty overpowered, so the DM should take care in what feats he/she allows, even if this race is otherwise allowed in the game.

I found myself wanting a bit more in terms of player options, even if that meant fewer demigod "monster" stats. Perhaps that's because I bought this to allow a player to create a demigod PC, but I would've liked that to be more of the focus. If feats are intended to flesh out the areas that a character focuses on...what makes two characters unique, even if they have the same race and class...then it would be helpful to have more feats to explore different aspects of what it means to be a demigod. Is the son of Thor going to exhibit different abilities than the daughter of Anubis? I would think so, and it would be interesting if a sourcebook explored this further. I also found myself wanting a demigod theme and paragon path for players who really wanted to focus on that aspect of their character. "Sure, I'm a warrior, but I'm the son of Zeus!" In fairness, that's probably more than one could hope for from a short guide at this price, but if an expanded version were made available, I'd be interested.

Races of Fantasy is a great value. Included in this PDF are some great game aids.

The race is a great perspective for me to look at for my campaign. The campaign world I'm creating is heavily influenced by outsiders and this race will help me in creating the world races and populations.

I haven't play tested it yet but I'm sure any minor issues can be worked around.

I recommend added the publishers name somewhere to the front page. I had to really dig, buried on a copyright notice, to find it.

Quite a versatile product, this work caters for both those who wish to take the unusual role of divinity by playing a demigod as a character as well as for DMs who want to have the odd demigod wandering around his world and, no doubt, causing trouble!

Demigods are the offspring of a deity and a mortal, and have some of the features of both. Such a union can happen by chance (at least on the mortal's part) or as part of a deliberate ritual, but the majority of demigods thus produced often find it hard to settle as there's always a bit of 'otherness' about them even if they have never been acknowledged by their divine parent, even if they do not know who it is or even what they are. Still, great heroes and great villains have arisen from such origins. Many who do know of their ancestry choose to become clerics or paladins devoted to their divine parent... and some (there's a feat for it) are even able to parent more demigods in their turn.

All the appropriate detail is provided for those wishing to use the demigod as a character race, complete with apposite powers to choose from - some relating to general divinity and some drawing on the particular deity involved. If that doesn't suit, futher notes are provided for those who would prefer to present demigods as monsters. The whole thing rounds out with some adventure ideas, as well as blank power cards, a character sheet and some rather generic counters.

It is an interesting concept, and one which has spawned many myths and legends... but I feel that it needs to be approached with caution, lest a demigod PC end up dominating the plot and leaving the rest of the party as hangers-on rather than heroes in their own right. Carefully handled, though, it could make for some powerful and interesting adventures.

The Demigod is, as you can imagine, the child of a mortal and a god, your typical Hercules or whatnot. The race has a "Divine" origin (see the post above, though), radiant resistance and mainly express their parentage by having a Divinity feat as a racial feature. The story fluff accompanying the crunch is adequate, presenting the idea of demigods as outsiders with varying degrees of acceptance according to where they live. There's 5 new feats, and a full entry for demigod monsters (4 varieties, lore and encounter groups) rounding it all out.

Where I was a bit disappointed was in the feats section, not because the ones presented aren't good (they're fine), but because this would have been a great place to add feats that customize each demigod to be a better representation of the parent deity, a place to make the race truly unique. An obvious example: even though the image used in the product has wings, there's no way for your PC demigod to have wings and hover/fly.

The product comes bundled with a number of helpful forms, including sheets of empty power cards (though the encounter feat power presented in the product does not come pre-filled into one of them) and a character sheet, and token sheets featuring the cover art in Medium and Large size. They are a fine addition, if unrelated to the actual product (save for the tokens).

Overall, it's a pretty good value. Lee did a fine job here of presenting this race (though I'd like to suggest that Lee Hammock's name be added somewhere in the product), and it certainly fits the 4e ethos of non-Tolkienesque fantasy.
