XXX_Cthulhu Live 3rd Core Rulebook & Companion Suite [BUNDLE]

Cthulhu Live is by far the best horror LARP on the market to date. The rules are fast and easy to learn, and are flexible enough to allow a casual walk-up player to learn in about 5-10 minutes, and yet have plenty of bells and whistles for the more extended campaigns with recurring characters. Combat is VERY deadly, prompting more roleplaying out of players than simply drawing down and shooting everyone (which does still occur, just not as often).

The best way to describe Cthulhu Live is by saying it is a murder mystery except with monsters that eat your face off. For those not familiar with Lovecraft's universe, there are things which exist that man was not meant to interact with, and when it happens, people die, go insane, or both. The sanity check system in Cthulhu Live is incredibly simple yet effective, and tells you exactly how you should be acting/reacting to the awfulness around you.

The book includes a number of suggestions for stage make-up effects, creating monsters, and even how to make "blood" that will wash out of practically any fabric without leaving a stain. If you enjoy horror make-up and want some basics on how to create quick but effective looks or giant puppet monsters, this is worth the price of the book alone.

The companion suite contains a bunch of extras that may or may not come in handy for your game. Perhaps the best part of the companion suite is a collection of scripts and texts for "ancient" books. The scripts get you going without needing to create something from scratch, and the text is printable so you could create your own "evil tomes" to use as props in the game. It's even pretty easy to add in your own tailored information to the text file so the characters can research and discover it in the game without the Keeper (the guy in charge; the gamemaster) coming in and saying, "As you read through, you come across this which tells you..."

Also in the companion suite are a couple of html pages and programs for those events that take place in present day or future settings. You can alter these programs a bit if you have the know-how to work html code and be able to offer a bit more interaction at a computer terminal in your game. There are printable badges and logos of various international government departments, some pre-gen characters, and some templates of "official" documents that you can tailor to your game as well.

Considering the price, there is no reason not to get the bundle set of the rulebook and companion suite. If you have the extra cash, I would even recommend picking up one of the other packs that includes some or all of the published scripts that Skirmisher has put out. You get a pretty complete game for around $30 or less, and what other system will do the same? All you'll need afterwards is a group of people and a place to play, maybe a few unique props, and off you go. It isn't much harder to plan than the mainstream murder mystery box games, and you get much more than one game with this product for about the same price if not less. If you want more thinking and less boffering with your LARPs, with the tension building up to a big horrific and bloody ending, get this game. You won't be disappointed.
