Harlem Unbound
Publisher: Darker Hue Studios
by James P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/17/2018 05:59:55

Harlem Unbound is one of those games that you pick up, and don't put down because it's just that good of a read! It reminded me a lot of the high-quality setting development, research, and writing that I found in GURPS supplements.

Chris Spivey takes you into the Harlem Renaissance and shares a rich part of America's history in a truly interesting and exciting way. Then, he carefully weaves the Cthulhu mythos into it. He provides you with everything you need to play a Gumshoe game in this era. You'll find story hooks, scenarios, supporting casts, and 2 beefy scenarios.

One of the most important things about this book, however, is its subject matter. As Mr. Spivey points out right away in the Introduction, Harlem Unbound doesn't pull any punches when it comes dealing with racism. At first, this may make you reconsider purchasing, or playing in this setting. However, the setting outlined here is so rich, and lends itself so well to the Mythos, that passing it by would be a mistake.

Mr. Spivey writes:

"No, we can’t truly know what it was to live during the Harlem Renaissance. And no, white people can never really understand the impact of insidious racism. But we’re gamers. We embrace the idea of living different lives through play—and each time we do, we learn something new. If we’re lucky, we reach a better understanding of people different from ourselves, and learn to empathize with the “other.” I tried to write the book in such a way that it would be approachable to all gamers, but respectful of the truth of history and racism without making a mockery of the pain and perseverance of so many people."

Spivey goes on to address roleplaying in this setting, and handling racism and other social issues in your game, in the "Storytelling" chapter.

Ultimately, this is a great book, with a great setting that you should add to your library. Whether you love Gumshoe, the Cthulhu Mythos, or are looking for a setting that hasn't been done before, then this is the book for you.

So, make your way down to Harlem, and watch out for anything in the shadows.

Maschine Zeit and Adventure Bundle [BUNDLE]
Publisher: Machine Age Productions
by James P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/20/2011 12:33:55

Maschine Zeit is a great game with awesome mechanics. It's quick and easy to learn and the mechanics really push the game in the direction it needs to go (suspense-building horror) in a natural way by directly involving the players in the creation of the story.

I've run both the "Radiation Wraiths" and the "Ephesus Abbey" scenarios now. We really loved "Ephesus" and, being the second MZ game we ran, it went better than we expected.

My players left the table talking about how great the game was, how much fun they had, and how I should run it at a Con!

Savage Worlds Deluxe
Publisher: Pinnacle Entertainment
by James P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/02/2011 07:23:58

Savage Worlds Deluxe is more than just a reprint, it's a whole revision of the core rules. Pinnacle has created a truly excellent edition here. First, the rules clarifications are excellent. It's very apparent that they have listened to the Savage Worlds players and built this version with their input and from years of playtesting. I found many of the details written in a clearer, easier to understand way.

Second, there is a lot of new content here. Pinnacle has added a lot of content and rule additions that have come from other supplements and support materials. You'll find, for example, rules for building racial templates. You'll also find a collection of almost-ready-to-play archetype characters and even several one-sheets.

I highly recommend this new release to seasoned (or even Legendary) Savage Worlds GMs and players as well as those just getting ready to try it out.

This is my first set of paper miniatures from Arion games and I have to say that the quality is excellent. Plus, I really like the fact that a PowerPoint version of the minis is included as well. This lets you quickly and easily create an army or custom print out of the flats! Great!

Shuffler - Modern and Sci-Fi Map Creator
Publisher: Paper Make iT !
by James P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/03/2010 18:27:34

Shuffler is really a great little program. I've tried a few others that are similar and really like Shuffler the best. It's easy to use and fairly intuitive so you can get a good looking map in no time. Plus, it's one of the only ones I've found that is dedicated to modern and Sci-Fi themes. Most other mapping tools seem to be geared to the fantasy realm.

Print out your maps on glossy photo paper and then glue your them to black foam core for really great, durable, and impressive tiles. The pre-generated maps are great too since most of the heavy lifting is done for you and you can just edit it quickly.

Great!
