A Simple, smooth and versatile adaptation of the Old School rules. The setting is simple, yet well thoughtout to cover a variety of play styles. This is a game that can easily cover a Star Wars, Babylon 5, or Star Trek style game, or just as easily do Firefly, Alien or Outland. Though it is a class based system (Expert, Psychic and Warrior) the classes are well balanced and quite flexible. Backgrounds and Training packages allow for a wide diversity within a class, while keeping things manageable for the GM. Only two alien species are provided, but guidelines for developing more are included. The free version does not include the rules for AI PCs or Mechs. I was so impressed with the free version that I had to order the POD of the pay version and I was not disappointed. Great game!

What a great free book. I got this from a link from a guy on my local gaming guilds' meetup post. This was awesome. Great character creation tools, great planet, races and scenario creation system. I love sci-fi and with a few throws of the die in preparation you could be off exploring your newly created sandboxed universe with your friends in no time at all. I love this book. There's also an african tribal add-on that just came out recently that I downloaded as well. I'm no GM but I can't wait to find a group to GM this, hell I would play EVERY week if they had this.

This is a simple but intuitive take on sandbox gaming, with an intriguing setting and well-crafted rules. That this is available for free is nothing short of amazing.

A sci-fi theme using OD&D rules - nice! And it's free!

It's a little bit like Traveller, with OD&D rules (in my view, anyway); since it has tech levels, etc, slightly similar to Traveller.

Very well written, with helpful sections: Game Master's Guide, World Generation, Adventure Creation, Alien Creation, Spaceship Design, Hydra Sector.

All in all, very nicely done.

Slight niggles: graphically flat; also, each page heading (World Generation, Xenobestiary, etc) has a large black square with the heading in white writing. That large black heading frame will eat up the ink a bit, considering there are approximately 15 or more headings.

But apart from the slight niggles mentioned above, it's very good, and well recommended.

This is an incredible game with incredible value.

Stars Without Number is presented as an "old school" style game. And, it lovingly lives up to that task with familiar elements of old school D&D. But, this is not just an old school game. For those not interested in the recent Old School Renaissance movement, don't ignore this game!

The text is clearly written and imaginatively conceived. This is science fiction role-playing at its finest. There are wonderful tools for creating your own galactic "sandbox" of stars, planets, factions, and adventure ideas.

The system features a simple D&D-esque style, but with many clever nods to modern game design, including simple, versatile skill system and a simple, flavorful psionic system. The rules also include an easy, but engaging, starship combat system. Finally, the faction system is great. The GM can create several factions that then "move" in between game sessions to give the universe and dynamic feel. Player Characters can affect these machinations, and even start their own factions.

My only gripe with the game is the presentation. It's graphic design is flat, but completely readable. Otherwise, the content, passion, imagination and helpful tools are top notch.

Frankly I have no use for the d20 system. It doesn't matter. This product is great anyway if only for having a world generation system that is quick, colourful, and focussed on the important thing, "What can this world be used for in a roleplaying game?" Having spend hours generating one worthless rock after another in orbit around one red dwarf after another or even one collection of generic Traveller stats after another, I appreciate that a great deal. Apart from that it has quite a good way of rolling large scale conflicts for those PCs who manage to put themselves in charge of military units, espionage agencies, or corporations. The alien creation stuff is interesting. They acknowledge that there are two basic approaches to alien psychology, making them something nearly impossible to communicate with, or make them basically humanlike, but with a Hat or two, a defining trait like "scholarly" or "treacherous". C'mon. You know it's how you do it. It's how Star Trek and Star Wars do it too. Example alien critters and the example set of worlds (on a Traveller subsector map) look like stuff you could totally snag for inspiration. This is definitely worth the download for any interstellar science fiction gm.

Just going to write a quick one.

It is a very nice book, that is for sure, and certainly well worth the download, especially considering the fact it is available here for free.

In fact I intend to buy a paper copy of it the first chance I get.

Words fail me to describe how wonderful it is. Unbelievably vivid and thoroughly made. Can just imagine how much work has been put in producing this absolutely amazing piece. Looking forward to find a group of interested people to play with.

An absolutely fantastic game. Clear rules and quick game mechanics, with the right amount of crunch, and a setting that despite it's brevity is just oozing with ideas. This is the first sci-fi game in a good number of years that makes me want to start a new game immediately.

I downloaded this a couple days ago, and in the morning I'm calling my friendly local game store to see if they have the print version from Mongoose.

A very well thought out & well compiled scifi RPG. The system is easy to implement. The single thing I did not care for was the THAC0-esque combat system. I otherwise loved the old-school mechanics the game employs!

Out of four down loads this is the only one I receieved without error or corruption. This game is interesting, however using the old D&D style just doesn't work, though the effort was great. And I will try running this game a couple more times. All my players felt the same, and none would ever want to buy this product. For effort and flavor I would rate this high, for the system low 3 stars

No acabo de entender lo de enivar una critica, antes de haber leido el manual, pero supongo que se refiere al funcionamiento de la web y el sistema de compra. En ese sentido, encantado con ambas cosas, por su buen funcionamiento y facilidad.

As a rabid Traveller fan, I downloaded the PDF for free as well as the add-ons, always up for another science fiction game.

I am very pleased! The old-style D&D rules pare it down to the basics while containing just enough rules to cover all common situations. The story is very strong, and is an intriguing balance with a "sandbox" game.

My kids are interested in Traveller, but this game is a better introduction to the concept of role-playing. We've spent our first sessions together getting characters together, and the rules encourage us to think of the story behind the character. Now my two daughters (9 and 7) are begging me every other day to get that sector done! Which I am doing now.

I still love Traveller, but I will definitely play this game regularly. If we all have fun, I'll be purchasing every PDF Sine Nomine Publishing produces for this game!
