On Common Ground: American Civil War Miniatures Wargame
The Civil War is typically something that I avoid... growing up in the Smyth County part of Virginia I've been exposed to all the importance of local Saltville and its salt mines, the various battle spots of the war, Civil War re-enactment groups, etc. etc. etc. Basically, like NASCAR (living 50 some odd minutes up 81 from Bristol Motor Speedway), the American Civil War has been crammed down my throat... more times than once.
However, regardless of my typical disgust for having to deal with it again, the Civil War is part of the local heritage... my heritage... and thus also holds sway of interest on the few local gamers that I've had the opportunity to round up.
With this in mind, I've been needing to get a rules set to hold miniatures wargames that are at least roughly Civil War based (if not entirely accurate).... On Common Ground appears to suit my needs for this.
I gave it a five star rating because the rules are simple enough, the file is small enough... this in turn allows me to satisfy the local gamers without having sacrifice a great deal of my time in a war that I could really care less in learning about. However, on that same note, I've got to admit that I've found the game play of this miniatures battle system to be rather appealing towards the concept of "fun"... aka as in fun for me... regardless of the tired old setting that I've otherwise grown to loathe.
As such, if you are a Civil War buff but you don't want to have to deal with a great amount of rules... get it. If you are someone like me and simply getting a Civil War related game to shut up a few overly eager players... get it. If anything this wargame offering means less intensive rules that you will have to suffer through in order to deliver the candy that your Civil War drooling players want.
