The Skinner of Syranthia (TSoS) is a rare thing: an investigation adventure in a sword & sorcery setting. And despite what might look as a counterintuitive approach, TSoS works pretty well. It takes place in the city of Syranthia, the main center of civilized learning in the Dominions, famous for its Great Library, and involves a long forgotten evil (Writing more in a this review would spoil the whole thing). Investigation does not mean no action though and in fact two great action pieces are featured in the scenario, at its beginning and climax (and some minor fights can happen during the course of the adventure if the PCs are not careful). The investigation is mostly urban, with a short ride not far from the city. It is handled through a series of encounters the PCs will provoke or be led into. The NPCs are colorfully defined and the background of the adventure is well drawn without being too complex. The revelation of the evil behind the plot should be a surprise. Even though you can adapt it easily to another fantasy setting, TSoS makes good use of the Dominions of the Dread Sea setting and of the city of Syranthia, some of its key landmarks being used to good effect in a couple of scenes. There is no general description of the city though, but I did not find it was an issue: this is a short adventure and what is needed is provided. As a bonus, attentive readers will enjoy some background information about Justinus, the scholar who has taken upon itself to explore the Dominions through various books published by Gramel. The only reservation I have about TSoS is that I would not use it as a starting adventure for B&B since it might not meet the players' expectations in terms of sword & sorcery adventure. Wait until the PCs have a few adventures under their belt and then throw them in TSoS. All should definitively enjoy it.

This is a great short Sword and Sorcery type adventure, that can easily be run in a session. The adventure, though somewhat linear allows the players freedom to try and solve the mystery at hand and of course save the damsel.

There is a bit of problem solving, and a good chase scene that gives the players more to do than just hack and slash their way to the end. The antagonist is thought out and has decent motivations for what he is doing.

The only drawback, is there are a few places where there is an assumption that the players will do the right thing to move the adventure forward. Some might find this a bit railroady, but a good GM should be able to give the PCs a bit of freedom and keep them still on track.

Like all the B&B stuff I have read, this can easily be ported over to other game systems or fantasy setitngs with little effort, making it quiet versatile.

This is a clean and no-fuss easy to run adventure for Beasts & Barbarians by Gramel. All the ingredients for a fun and memorable gaming experience are there. Investigation, chase, combat and roleplay with NPC's. There's enough material to last you one or two gaming sessions. The chase uses the mechanics from the Savage Worlds Deluxe edition and features a different event for each of the five rounds. The villain's background story and motivation are reminescent of a cultist in the Chthulu mythos. The monsters the PC's will face are fresh and will mystify, intrigue and challenge them. The finale will leave the party of adventurers cheering and feel good about themselves. They will even get their hands on a relic that will prove useful during the adventure while not giving them a possible unbalancing advantage in follow up adventures.

If you feel I'm being too vague, see for yourself. It's only a few dollars and you won't regret it.

An amazing adventure, with investigations, fights, mistery, dark powers and rooftop runs! Another great way to enter in the savage world of Beasts and Barbarians.
