Dept. 7 Adv. Class Update: Scion of Masada is a short product from Skortched Urf' Studios. The zipped file is just over three and a half megabytes in size, and contains a single PDF. The PDF is ten pages long, including a page for the cover, one for the credits/legal, and one for the OGL. It has no bookmarks, nor does it really need them.

The product has a fair amount of artwork for its length. The cover image is the only full color art you'll find here. There are three interior images, all of which are in black and white (one of which is a reproduction of the cover image). Unfortunately, all of the interior images are somewhat pixelized, which is a shame. The pages have no borders, making this product mostly printer-friendly by itself.

After a short introduction, the product goes straight into detailing the Scion of Masada advanced class. The core of the class is centered around the mystic short swords a Scion is given, which are imbued with the spirit of a martyr of Masada. These have several enhancements and additional powers added to them as the Scion gains levels. A few other powers, such as the ability to use a small number of spells, also round things out. One class feature that is quite flavorful is that Scions cannot use any of their mystical powers during Shabbat (the Jewish Sabbath) or on certain holidays, since those are religious days of rest.

Seven new feats round out the book. Most of these are generic to various special ops groups, but a few are more closely tied to the spirit of the class, such as Aligned Zealot or Krav Maga.

Altogether, Scion of Masada does an extremely good job of portraying a modern-day Jewish holy warrior. The character archetype focuses more on being a Solid Snake-type character, with the religious powers enhancing that rather than focusing more heavily on mysticism, giving this class a very cohesive feel. Like a paladin for the modern world, the Scion of Masada is an excellent class to take when you want to kick butt in the name of your religion.

LIKED: This class has a distinct feel to it, and comes across as being more than a group of abilities that just happen to be under one banner. The Scion class comes across as an edgier, grittier, modern holy warrior, with a trademark fighting style backed up by a suite of related abilities. The style of design here is very well done.

DISLIKED: The interior art was unfortunately pixelized.

QUALITY: Excellent

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Réponse Editeur:
I found the issue with pixelation of some artwork. I had some settings out of wack when importing images into Adobe InDesign. The products has been fixed, and I re-did this PDF with the high rez artwork. Thanks for taking the time to review this product!
