Swashbucklers of the Seven Skies (S7S) is a game of action, adventure and (wait for it...) swashbuckling in a fantastic world of floating islands, sky pirates, dashing princes, nefarious courtesans and much danger. It is a wonderful setting, evocatively painted through the text, illustrations, and rules design. Think Errol Flynn, the Three Musketeers, and all those thrilling adventure tales of yore, mixed with a healthy dash of the fantastic. The game itself is based on a streamlined version of the PDQ system, which uses short statements to describe your character and a very simple die mechanic to resolve action. The PDQ system is certainly on the "light" end of the rules spectrum, but covers everything you expect it to. My favourite part of the system is how damage (physical, mental or otherwise) can affect your other "descriptors". This means getting beat up in a duel can later influence your ability to influence someone in a social situation, or even the other way around! If you have ever fancied yourself the captain of a magnificent flying galleon (accompanied by your crew of cutthroats, courtesans, explorers, noblemen, or savages), traversing the seven skies in search of adventure, glory or treasure, then you should check out this game!

There's a reason why Chad Underkoffler was tapped to write the setting material for the much anticipated Dresden Files RPG from Evil Hat: as S7S demonstrates, with his writing, you're sure to get something you haven't seen before. If you're a fan of Swashbuckling RPGs at all, pick this up. This isn't your typical "pirate" RPG, or even pulp "sky pirate" fare. The game takes place in a virtual "snow globe" of inter-layering skies, each it's own micro-environment of sorts. Plus, you've got vastly different cultures rife with intrigue.... In terms of the PDQ system, S7S is the best laid-out book so far; regrettably though, the appealing "under the hood" approach of ZoZ is absent. The PDQ system itself is the biggest selling point of the book. I am reluctant to run most OGL based games because of the number crunching and the sheer volume of rules to keep track of. PDQ has none of that. For specific information on the system, see the free PDQ Sharp! pdf. here on RPGNow.
