"When the Sky Falls" is an event book which introduces the falling of a meteorite into a fantasy setting as well as the aftermath, or "Afterfall." The book covers three types of meteorites and how to best introduce them into your campaign world. For those interested in crunch the book also provides a plethora of new material including four new prestige classes, 12 new meteorite-related feats, 38 new spells, new magic items and monsters as well as five scenarios which can be easily integrated into any campaign.

Each section includes useful check lists which game masters can use to plan their event beforehand. These check lists ensure the game master has sorted out all the details and will get the most out of introducing this event to their story.

I found the book to be very useful and a welcome addition to my collection. Planning out major events like this can be a time consuming process and this product makes sure I get the most out of my time without missing any of the important details.

This book is a d20 product but can also be used (with some adjustments) with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game. A lot of the material is game agnostic.

I found this sourcebook really cool. The content about adding a major destructive event, such as a meteorite impact, to your campaign world is useful for anyone who wants to run or play in an epic campaign (I don't mean epic-level, I just mean epic coolness/action), even if you're not planning on adding this event specifically. It contains some neat feats, classes, and organizations you can adapt to your game, and the part at the end with different possible types of cosmic threats (a fallen angel, a space fungus, an artifact of absolute evil, etc.) was my favorite part. I would recommend this book to anyone looking to add some cool new ideas to their campaign.

I greatly enjoyed this book. It takes an unused topic (a meteor strike from outer space) and does some interesting and fun things with it.

The organization of the material in the book is well thought out. The discussion of the natural effects of a meteoric impact are kept separate from the magical effects. This allows DMs using the book to use only those parts that they want to. The game material in the book is only useful for a campaign which uses the premise the book is based upon, but that it understandable. Kierran Yanner (sp?) is a favorite of mine and I think his artwork fit the theme of the book well.

I was so happy with this book that I purchased the hardcopy after buying the PDF.

WtSF is perhaps the single finest 3.5 supplement I have purchased.

As an event-book, it offers a great depth of content and breadth of view regarding the GM's chosen version of a celestial impact, while providing some truly innovative PrCs and circumstances to stymie the PCs. This is no mere adventure, nor is it too specific to be included in an established setting, whether published or 'homebrewed'.

Layout, artwork, and sidebar information all stitch together for a very tight package.

Really, this product is wonderful, and deserves to be praised.

As PDF: Good quality. Typical of Malhavoc products there is a clean design with much white-space, making it fast to read and easy on the toner to print.

As a supplement:

Of reasonable interest. Covers the events surrounding a 'skyfall' (i.e. meteor strike) and how it could be implemented in an ongoing campaign. Three different types of skyfall are covered - a mundane meteor strike, a magical meteor strike and an 'engram ark'. Other options, such as a fallen angel or monsters similar to The Blob, The Thing and The Colour Out of Space are also given brief notice.

As is typical of these kinds of books, a smattering of new feats, spells, items and prestige classes are covered. The concept of the Sky-Callers, an apocalyptic cult dedicated to calling down meteoric ruin would make for a good adventure or campaign. Other rules elements are fairly so-so. The Engram Ark concept is one that you will either love or hate. It draws on Bruce Cordells psionics work for Malhavoc, with a dark star-spanning Cthulhoid entity known as the Dark Plea (perhaps more Galactus, actually) that destroys entire worlds. Several monsters and items relate to the failed attempts of one world to send out their racial memories in 'engram arks' before the Dark Plea got them. Unlike other aspects of this book, this one plotline is to specific for my tastes.

If you ever need to shake up your campaign with a little natural disaster, buy this book. It will literally rock your world.

The book starts by describing how your campaign world will be physically altered by a significant meteor impact. It then goes on to describe several directions in which a post-disaster campaign can go. The book includes new rules and prestiege classes for version 3.5 tailored for a Skyfall campaign.

Does a pretty good job of going through some of the scenarios a meteor strike might bring to a fantasy campaign. From the cataclysmic to the much less so, this book had some original ideas, and was one of the better free downloads that's been offered on this site (at least, it was free at the time of this review). I'd say if you're looking for some ideas for a world-changing event a bit out of the ordinary, this is a nice pickup; even if you aren't running d20, much can still be gleaned from it.

Well thought out, innovative, and original. Easily dropped into pretty much any game as a world shaking event that will force players to rethink what is important.

An RPG Resource Review:

What would happen to your campaign setting if it suffered a massive meteorite impact? The purpose of this book is to explore the effects and the possibilities for adventure that would arise. It's full of practical pointers to aid your planning and help you manipulate such an event to best effect.

Chapter 1: The Impact Site starts by discussing how to choose the most suitable location in your campaign setting to serve as the target for your meteorite. If you pick somewhere that's fairly central to the action, you have just wrecked a lot of the work you have already done on it, but the characters have a whole host of ready-made reasons to care about what's going on. On the other hand, if you have the impact somewhere remote, you can design the wreckage from scratch but then have to find reasons for the characters to have more than momentary interest in the news. And so on - each choice has implications, so it's worth thinking the location through before going any further. Then, of course, you need to decide what landed. Was it the conventional astromical lump of rock, or something more exotic? Two alternatives are described: the thaumaturgic meteorite, which is made of a magical substance, and the engram ark, which is a relic of a lost world with all manner of goodies - and monsters - encapsulated within.

Details decided, next to consider is the impact itself and its effects - including suffient information to let you give a graphic description, should the characters be eyewitnesses. They'd better be distant eyewitnesses, as anything two miles from the impact point takes 50hp damage from a 30-foot diameter meteor's impact! Apart from the sheer damage of impact, effects include strange weather, wildfire, a large crater; and who knows what might also happen in a world where magic is real? And that's with a mundane rock. Further discussion looks at the more exotic missle effects - such as an Ethereal-Material Pulse that acts as a massive wave of dispel magic, and the interesting debris that can be collected afterwards.

Next, Chapter 2: Integrating the Event looks at how to actually make the arrival of your chosen meteor a coherent part of your ongoing plotline. Is the characters' first knowledge of it a fiery screech across the sky above their heads, or do they find a prophecy or hear about events in distant lands? New cults may arise, old ones may lose (or gain) adherents, social order may break down, the landscape itself may be changed - all these possibilities and more are addressed with copious examples to fuel your own imagination.

Chapter 3: Prestige Classes does pretty much what it says - present several prestige classes which are connected to a meteorite impact. Some arise in the aftermath of the fall, other are actually a result of it. Astrogineers study thaumaturgic meteorites and practise astromancy, the manipulation of energy from such magical celestial bodies. The engram adept relies on the engram ark form of meteorite for his powers. The lord of silence is able to manipulate sound, more accurately the absence of sound; while ruin priests are chaos-minded spellcasters who harness the destructive forces of a meteorite fall and even attempt to call down more.

Chapter 4: Feats of the Afterfall looks at some of the new feats that may be acquired as a result of a meteorite strike. Similarly, Chapter 5: Spells lists new spells in some way related to one. Then Chapter 6: Magic Items is primarily concerned with those which are made from bits of meteorite - including the classic one of a weapon forged from meteoric iron, of course. Next, Chapter 7: Monsters provides some awesome beasts swept along with a meteorite that might come to land in your world as a result.

Chapter 8 is called 'I found it in the crater' and consists of five fairly detailed adventure ideas for you to use. Each is embedded in the concepts already presented and even if none appeal, they are a good example of how to weave events and adventures resulting from them right into an ongoing campaign, rather than just bolt them on.

If you have ever watched one of the popular 'natural disaster' movies, you may have wondered how it would translate from the customary contemporary setting to that of your favourite fantasy world. As well as providing plenty of ideas for a meteorite impact story, many features of this product provide guidelines for introducing a range of natural disasters as a source of adventure; and how to mix in fantasy elements rather than keep to a strictly 'normal' event.

When the Sky Falls provides some very interesting options for dealing with meteoric impacts. The new astromancy skills, spells, items and events can offer a non-traditional dimension to the usual campaign. The majority of the document deals more with the new Engrams and the impact of the Dreaming Dark than actual meteoric events--which can provide a new type of power item. I have already planned a thaumaturgic meteorite strike in my current campaign and am intrigued to see how the players react. I would have liked an additional table or two that fleshed out the diameter of the meteorite and the destructive ranges--but those can be worked out with the formulas provided. Definitely would recommend WtSF to round world-building ref materials.
