Commodity Cards II: Raw Materials $2.50 $1.88
Publisher: Tangent Games
by Peter I. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 02/08/2006 00:00:00
Commodity Cards II: Raw Materials is the second in Tangent Games' Commodity Cards series and follows after the first instalment detailing food and drink. Like the first product in this series this product forms part of the Campaign Detailer series and aims to add a little bit more detail, realism, or variety to a campaign world. As the name suggests, this is all about raw materials, such as ores, woods, plants, hides, and various animal commodities.

The product comes as a single pdf file and doesn't have any bookmarks nor some form of index. These would've been particularly useful to find certain pages, such as pages where a given raw material's commodity cards start or where the random tables can be found in the pdf. Commodity Cards II: Raw Materials is a 37 page pdf, of which 24 pages are devoted to the cards themselves, while the remainder contains advice, suggestions and a number of tables to select your own commodities from the lists provided.

The format is very similar to Commodity Cards I: Food and Drink, and some of the text is probably similar as well. The pdf provides some suggestions on how to use the commodity cards, as well as detailed descriptions of the details on each card, such as quantities, values, appraise DCs and the like. Each card is 2.5" by 3" and prints about the size of a business card. The aim is to print the cards, and, when a particular new treasure is required or the DM wishes to stock a lumberyard or abandoned forge, then a card can be drawn from the relevant pile (for example, ore for forges or wood for a lumberyard) and the commodity used. The commodity cards are divided into different types, each type identifiable by a particular image on the card face, such as a picture of a tree for all plant commodities. For those that don't wish to print all the cards and their card images, tables are provided so that the dice can determine which commodity is to be selected.

Several hundred different commodities are included and offer a very interesting variety of different materials to use and treasure to divide out. There are even hints of the somewhat more fantastical in here such as dragon teeth and the hides of various dire animals. The pdf provides a very complete list of raw materials to choose from, and will be a good product to use to add more detail to a game even if the cards themselves are not used as suggested.

LIKED: The variety of materials presented in this pdf is excellent and very useful to those interested in adding a little more detail to their campaigns.

DISLIKED: The artwork on the cards isn't particularly good, and the lack of index or bookmarks makes it difficult to navigate to find something in the pdf.
