DDAL00-04 Winter's Flame (5e)

DDAL00-04 Winter's Flame (5e) An excellent module that I have both played and ran, and each time I had an awesome experience. It's got a little bit of everything, and I appreciated the opportunity for players to just RP or have fun without trying to murder-hobo. Of any module I've played in, the best part of the adventure is the mood and atmosphere, I haven't seen anything else quite like it. ----------------- ---SPOILERS--- ----------------- -
The adventure calls for 2 hours, but it quickly got out of hand and pushed past 3 hours when my players reached the games. I tried to speed things up by allowing cumulative wins rather than successive, and kept it somewhat organized by going in a pseudo-initiative order (one player, one game, next player) until each player was done playing. I think the next time I run it I will have the party visit each game and players who wish to play roll together (Castin' Blastin' Conjourers may not work so well for that, though). I tried to encourage them to get 10 tokens and let th...

Lasers and Liches Test Wave 1 I'm very much looking forward to running a game in this universe when the chance presents. The additions to 5e they've made (new classes, new races, and new variations to existing races) are really intriguing, and having access to 80s and 90s references to throw in really has a chance to bring this world to life.

DDAL07-02 Over the Edge (5e)

DDAL07-02 Over the Edge (5e) SPOILER-FREE REVIEW I have played and ran these adventures. These are five intro adventures for tier 2 set in Chult. They have a great connecting backstory and can pretty mcuh be played in any order. If you don't get to go through all five immediately, it's not a problem. In fact, if you only use 1 or 2 of them in a campaign, you really aren't losing anything from the story. they can make great last-minute fill-in adventires when needed. Great use of the factions to connect the backstories here. Good treasure rewards, with items appropriate to the tier and length of the adventures. Some pretty fun role-playing based story awards as well. My only two issues with the adventures are: 1) Duration - I don't think any of these can really be accomplished in an hour. 90 minutes would not be a problem fo reach, but 60 minutes is definately not realistic. 2) Maps - Although you can figure it out/wing it, it would be nice if the maps for adventures 1, 2, and 4 were labelled with the ...

Adversaries of the Righteous: Fivefold Masks and Lies The character is actually quite a good adversary for any group. I also like the addition of the rapier as a new weapon type. The pronouns make it hard to read, but it is a positive adition to the line.

DDAL07-02 Over the Edge (5e) Normally I don't like 1 hour adventures. This set of T2 encounters has mechanical issues -- I had to 'hack' extra short rests in several times, most notably on the Hermit's tower -- but somehow manages to overcome my usual complaints. They're fun, bite-sized adventures you can fit in where needed.

DDAL05-03 Uninvited Guests (5e) A solid try at a 2 hour adventure. It suffers from the usual issues of 2 hour adventures, but manages to pick up a bit with it's conclusion. It makes solid use of magician's force to give the players the *appearance* of agency, while maintaining it's internal integrety quite well. The final fight has potential to be quite entertaining.

DDAL05-04 In Dire Need (5e)

DDAL05-04 In Dire Need (5e) One of my favorite modules, ever. I don't typically like 2 hour mods. This one is the exception. It's a giant sand box that players get to play in, and DMs are given awesome tools to handle anything they do. So long as they stay on-mission, the mod doesn't concern itself with *how* they might prevail, it just gives us tools to adjudicate whatever they might want to try. And if the players get stuck, it gives us some truly awesome ideas. Bobsledding down a mountain, in a giant's sarcophogus, would be awesome. But no, that's not what we get. We get to *SURF* an *AVALANCHE* down the mountain. And rather than being given nitty-gritty mechanics to adjudicate it with no sense of fun, we're given general guidelines and told to adjust to what our table needs. I cannot over-emphasize how good this module is. This mod, by itself, not only clears the threshold of awesome, it leaps over it to the point where it breaks my rating curve. I make it a policy to rate a mod that avoids ...

DDAL05-05 A Dish Best Served Cold (5e)

DDAL05-05 A Dish Best Served Cold (5e) A good mix of role play, investigation, and combat, with some genuinely entertaining moments. A solid, strong effort that easily avoids railroading players into the 'one right way' to solve it. The only thing that keeps this from being a 5 star review is the lack of that something extra, that 'oomph', that you get on truly great mods. This is a *good* mod, it just doesn't make the leap into great.

DDAL05-06 Beneath the Fetid Chelimber (5e) T1 mods should really be careful of being combat-oriented. Way to easy to kill characters off without even meaning to, and an absolute dearth of actual roleplaying opportunities. 2 hour mods have to be frugal with their time. This mod was too frugal in all the wrong places.

DDAL05-08 Durlag's Tower (5e)

DDAL05-08 Durlag's Tower (5e) A fun mod, well worth running It's fun, engaging, and entertaining. No two runs are likely to be identical, right down to the possibility of a high-capability rogue (or other clever player shenanigans) short-circuiting half the adventure. It does have a few editorial issues that DMs need to be aware of and address. It's not explained in the mod, but the DMG guidance on traps is added because DMs are expected to ad-lib additional traps as needed and appropriate. Probably it's biggest flaw -- and the fact that this is actually it's biggest flaw is a pretty good sign of quality! -- is that a pair of assassins are given a set of scrolls. Scrolls that, firstly, they cannot possibly use as they are not spellcasters, and secondly that -- in the case of the Silence spell -- does not actually do them any good, since it's locked to the place it's cast on, and not mobile....
