DDAL04-02 The Beast (5e)

DDAL04-02 The Beast (5e) The Beast was a good adventure to run, and fun for the players. It is scheduled to only be two hours long, and unlike some "two hour" adventures, this one can be fit in a two hour session, with advice on how to expand it timewise by roleplaying the creepiness in the forest. I really like the potential to weaken the final encounter by using possible lore from the beginning of the adventure (even if my PCs did not do that). I also like the replayability by having semi-random encounters in the forest. The ending is sad no matter what the players do, but with an adventure in Barovia that is to be expected. If there is any problem with this scenario, it is the fact that this adventure effectively traps the character in Barovia until they can escape. So if you have a character you want to play in other adventures, make sure you have enough downtime to exit the Mists....

Critters, Creatures, & Denizens

Critters, Creatures, & Denizens A neuronphaser.com review. Critters, Creatures & Denizens (CCD, which happens to be a nice acronym alongside Dungeon Crawl Classics' DCC) is like the AD&D Monster Manual getting released before the AD&D Player's Handbook: it's a monster book with slightly more "advanced" rules, but it works perfectly with the existing game. To allay fears, it doesn't "change" any rules or break the game, it simply adds a little extra granularity to monster stats in the form of providing Ability Scores for all monsters, and for developing finer details for movement (running, flying, hovering). The existing stuff -- i.e. non-advanced versions of the rules -- is all there, too, so you're only getting additional information, not losing out on anything. With that note out of the way, CCD basically replaces and expands upon most of the monster info in the Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG core rulebook. It also includes incredibly in-depth rules discussions of monsters, monster creation, and monster conversio...

Daring Comics Training Room Rules
by RS P.
Publisher: Daring Entertainment
Date Added: 12/15/2017 13:36:47
Daring Comics Training Room Rules For what it is, this is pretty good as a one-shot introduction to Daring Comics. It reiterates certain rules from Fate Core and explains how they're tweaked for the superhero genre. It adds some new skills and stunts and introduces an Extra called a Power Set, which is an Aspect that you buy powers for. The powers listed are apparently a subset of what's available in the full rule book. You are supposed to use the sample characters for the one-shot so there is no explanation of how powers are bought. The power descriptions are short but there is enough detail to understand how the power works, the progressive levels of the power, and any special effects. The adventure itself consists of 8 Scenes and a collection of NPC and sample hero write-ups. The scenes are detailed enough to describe the setting and tips on how to run the scene. There are no maps. There is a good mix of action, investigation, and events to hang a story on. I did not actually run the adventure, so I can'...

Castles & Crusades Arms and Armor

Castles & Crusades Arms and Armor A neuronphaser.com review. Arms and Armor was updated during the Castles & Crusades "Three Sisters" (AKA core rulebooks) Kickstarter a couple years back (circa 2016), even though the cover pictured on this product page doesn't show it. What this means is that it is a COMPLETE reference for all mundane armors, helmets, shields, and weapons for the Castles & Crusades system, and with scads of pages of descriptive text noting physical features, measurements, and the history of each piece of gear, this is a useful reference for any OSR game, and probably most any D&D-derived system. There may be some historical inaccuracies -- I didn't note any, but that's not my field at all -- and you may see a lot of items with effectively the same stats, but any duplication in game stats is ignored when you have so much good detail on such a wide variety of items. In other words, the fluff is great, the stats are great, so anywhere you find duplication or superfluous distinctions can be ignored beca...

DCC RPG Quick Start Rules
by Tim B.
Publisher: Goodman Games
Date Added: 12/15/2017 12:42:42
DCC RPG Quick Start Rules A neuronphaser.com review. Briefly, the DCC RPG Quick Start Rules are a player's manual allowing Player Characters to reach level 2 in any of the core classes (warrior, wizard, cleric, thief, elf, dwarf, halfling), plus enough gameplay info for a Judge (AKA Game Master) to run the game through the two included, one-session adventures. If you're just looking for a thumbs up or thumbs down, this is a solid thumbs up, with maybe a caveat or two. For those looking for something lengthier: this is a great starting point, and absolutely sets out to do what it's intended for, which is to get a game of DCC up and running in no time, with a minimum of fuss. Save for advanced GMing techniques and higher levels, you get everything you need here, and the two included adventures are of a nature that a quick skim and you're on your way to running these things in no time. That's fantastic! The layout of all the info is tight and concise, as well as feeling complete -- I didn't notice anything m...

Town Gate Interiors 24" x 24" RPG Encounter Map Battle Maps VTT maps are just what I've been looking for. Sure, I could make my own, there are plenty of software products available, but at $.99 I could not ask for a better product. Just the right size for most of the encounters I run in on-line PbP games. The right amount of detail for my taste, and they come in both 72dpi and 300 dpi formats for me to chose. Really a great product for a great price. This one, the Town Gate Interior really stands out and I'll be using it for many games. There is always a reason to stop the heroes at the town gate, either as they are coming in or trying to get a..., I men, leaving, hehe....

Bad Apples (Level 3 PCs)

Bad Apples (Level 3 PCs) Running this now with my group; didn't quite finish in one session so we will continue next time. But it's already clear that this is a wonderful module with very evocative atmosphere, a clever story, interesting encounters, and great production value. Really user-friendly format, characteristic of the majority of Mr. Coleman's work that I've seen. This is a pleasure to run. The challenge level seemed appropriate for 5 level 3 PCs (half-elf battlemaster fighter, human cleric, gnome forest druid, halfling beast master revised ranger, and tiefling arcane trickster rogue). The fights were not exactly easy, but at no time was the party ever in danger of actually losing; DMs may want to beef up some of the foes if deadlier encounters are desired, but this was fine for my group. Some elements of the story were changed slightly by the abilities of the druid and ranger to communicate with and/or befriend animals in the orchard, but it only added to the adventure. Fit very nicely as a drop-in t...

Masquerade Chronicle Primer
by David B.
Publisher: White Wolf
Date Added: 12/15/2017 09:54:19
Masquerade Chronicle Primer Finally got this! Am always looking at ways of improving my Chronicle designs, so this book of course appealed to me very much! **The Good**. Such a nice, straightforward format and approach, covering all kinds of bases. Lots of excellent considerations and rules of thumb, including expansion on how to design a fictional city. The random methods of giving characters secrets and relationships remind me a bit of D&D back in the day, which is fine and no doubt can be very useful. I suspect the vast majority of Storytellers and STV writers would find this very useful in all sorts of ways, with the random detail generating systems automatically creating some startling and wonderful background details. **The Not-Great** I do think too little time and ink goes towards what might be called the creative aspects of storytelling, relying on formula without offering a guide about how to let secrets and stories emerge from the characters themselves. Likewise I would have like far more abo...

Villain Codex IV: Monsters for Meddlesome Heroes

Villain Codex IV: Monsters for Meddlesome Heroes An Endzeitgeist.com review The fourth installment of the Villain Codex-series clocks in at 17 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page editorial, 2 pages of SRD, leaving us with 13 pages of content, so let’s take a look! This review was moved up in my reviewing-queue at the request of my patreons. Okay, so we’re changing the formula this time around: Each of the characters featured herein is a monster with unique additionata – class levels, archetypes, etc. Analogue to the regular Villain Codex monikers, this book covers the middle level range: CRs range from 3 to 14. Each of the monsters herein comes with its own b/w-artwork and entry-wise, we focus on stats, though thankfully not to the extent, where this would be a traditional NPC Codex: The respective characters gain depth via the inclusion of goals and plots, which also act as inspiration for the GM. The respective entries note tactics, morale, etc., a nice feature that makes use of the NPCs herein easier. All right, ge...

The Genius Guide to Mythic Subpaths

The Genius Guide to Mythic Subpaths An Endzeitgeist.com review This Genius Guide clocks in at 18 pages, 1 page front cover, 1 page introduction, 1 page editorial, 1 page ToC, 1 page SRD, leaving us with 13 pages of content, so let’s take a look! So, what are mythic subpaths? In short, they are a kind of deviation/modification of an existing mythic path, somewhat akin to e.g. subdomains, one that comes in roughly 3 distinctions: Archetypical subpaths are only available to characters that chose the listed mythic path or paths. Racial subpaths are tied to the race noted and universal subpaths are available for, bingo, everyone. Mythic subpaths thus do sport some sort of prerequisite to qualify for them. Okay, got that? Humans can choose the dilettante subpath, but need to meet no less than 3 (!!) categories for mythic boons in the adventure that led to ascension. The mythic surge is lowere by one die step for them, but they may gain Dual Path, Extra Path and the extra mythic feast 1st tier universal path abilit...

Into the Living Library I've only played one session (out of an estimated 4-6 total for my group), but the entire adventure has been absolutely amazing so far. My group really loves the feel of the adventure and the setup that is guided, but definitely allows the players to set their own pace and choices. There's a ton of options and ways for the players to interact with the school environment that matches up far more to modern RPGs than to old railroaded style modules. If you've ever been interested in playing a cool low level module or a module set in a magic school (and who here hasn't?), then you should buy this module immediately ....

Races of the Outer Rim: the Omenoi You get to play as a possible evolution of a space frost worm; very nice! With appropriate background information, new tech, feats and stat related info, everything wrapped up in a good graphical layout, you can't go wrong with this one. It's specially good if you want PCs or NPCs that are mysterious and born travellers, and that are also quite a lot into duels.
