Adventures Dark and Deep Game Masters Toolkit

http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=114141

Publisher: BRW Games

What if Gary Gygax had not left TSR in 1985, and had been allowed to continue developing the world and rsquo;s most famous fantasy role-playing game?

Adventures Dark and Deep attempts to answer that question.

We will, unfortunately, never know exactly what it would have looked like, because Gary Gygax did leave TSR in that year, and others took over the job of designing the second (and subsequent) versions of the game. After that unfortunate episode, he was understandably reluctant to give any advice on how he would have carried the game forward.

However, he did leave behind hints as to the direction he would have taken the game. New character classes like the bard, jester, savant, mystic, and mountebank. Streamlined combat. New spells and magic items. Consolidated and re-worked monsters. We don and rsquo;t have many specifics, but we do have a fair number of and ldquo;big picture and rdquo; ideas. All of these have been taken as inspiration for and nbsp;Adventures Dark and Deep and trade;.

Bear in mind that we have no special insight into Gygax and rsquo;s mind on this subject other than what he himself wrote publicly, and certainly the game should not be taken as having any sort of official stamp, either from his estate or the corporations that have taken the game in new directions. All that has been done is to collect the hints he did leave, use them as inspiration, and take off in a wholly different direction than that which happened and ldquo;officially and rdquo;.

Adventures Dark and Deep and trade; and nbsp;is not a and ldquo;retro-clone and rdquo;. It does not set out to re-create a particular set of rules from decades past, as do some other games (not that there and rsquo;s anything wrong with doing so!). Rather, it is a new creation, unique unto itself, and does not attempt to recreate any set of rules that has gone before.

The Game Masters Toolkit and nbsp;contains rules, guidelines, and advice a game master needs to create a long-lasting campaign or run a one-shot adventure. It is the second of three core rulebooks for the game; the others are the Players Manual and Bestiary.

The rules are designed to be completely modular; take what you like, leave what you don't. Want mountebanks and savants but not the new combat system? No problem. and nbsp;

In its most sophisticated form, the pdf has:

and bull; pop-up navigation menus

and bull; fully hyperlinked

and bull; built-in dice roller

and bull; semi-automated character sheets

and bull; ability to import pictures directly into character sheet

and bull; on-screen mapping

and bull; one-click character creation

and bull; savable changes so you can have your own library of custom characters, NPC's, vehicles, maps and so on.

And all this is in the pdf, so you do not need anything other than a pdf app capable of implementing it. At the moment, the best choices are Acrobat Reader (desktop), PDF Expert (iOS) and qPDF Notes (Android). A free quickstart version with all the advanced features can be downloaded from here.

Note: The augmented features are currently slow on Android and we recommend you test out the quickstart or free reference sheets first if the advanced features are a and quot;make or break and quot; part of your purchase decision.

Each creation, submission, art and amp; what-not, belongs to their respective artists and amp; authors. Credits and contact information will be made available for each contribution.
Genius Guide to Apeiron Staves

http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=114438

Publisher: Super Genius Games

What In The World Are Apeiron (pronounced a-pay-ron) Staves?

Simply put, they are to spellcasters what a magic sword is to a fighter. They are weapons of war used by the magically inclined to blast away that which ails them. Where the swordmaster passes down his blade to his favorite student, so too does the master wizard pass his apeiron stave down to his star apprentice.

Apeiron staves are magical implements whose most basic function can be used without draining their magical reserves. While they are staff shaped, are magical, and have charges, that is where the comparison between an apeiron staff and a regular magical staff ends. Apeiron staves do not cast spells, but rather offer a number of augmentations to their basic effect. These augmentations do drain a separate reservoir, but even when this pool is empty, the apeiron staff can still be activated to use its basic effect.

Thanks! Now That I Know What They Are, Tell Me Why I Need An Apeiron Staff?

In the core rules, staves are treated as and ldquo;spells-in-a-can and rdquo; and ndash; a delivery mechanism for a specific number of abilities the user likely already possesses. Yes, they let you create impressive effects, but at the end of the day they are simply a different way to cast a spell. We already have potions, wands, scrolls, and a multitude of command-word items to do this. Why should the vast majority of magic item categories simply be different ways to cast a spell? That and rsquo;s where apeiron staves come in.

While most apeiron staves are offensively oriented, a fair number also exist to assist your allies. No longer shall a support character be faced with the question of what to do on some rounds. They can help give orders to their allies, boost their offensive capabilities, lift the burdens ailing their compatriots, and much more.

Cool! Last Thing... Apeiron Is A Crazy-Weird Word, Did You Just Make It Up?

Nope. The word apeiron is Ancient Greek for and ldquo;infinite and rdquo; or and ldquo;unlimited and rdquo;, or more literally and ldquo;without limit and rdquo; or and ldquo;without end and rdquo;. Perhaps its most famous user was the 6th century B.C. Greek natural philosopher Anaximander, which he used in his response to the Pre-Socratic natural philosophers of his age who were debating which element, Earth, Wind, Air, or Fire, was the basis of reality. Anaximander proposed that the basis of reality was actually the apeiron, or the infinite, and attributed a divine-like aspect to it. And so, much like how these staves create magic, he proposed that the universe was itself a creation of the apeiron. And that's why we think the name and ldquo;apeiron staves and rdquo; is appropriate for a type of magical staff that can continuously create a basic magic effect.

Besides, it just sound cool when you can have your character say and quot;Fear not this savage horde my friends, now that we have recovered my Apeiron Staff of the Spectral Hero, a mighty champion of legendary Mar'Kan shall fight with us this day! and quot;

Legend: Song of the Beast-Gods

http://www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=114508

Publisher: Mongoose

The follow-on from the acclaimed Spider-God's Bride, the Song of the Beast-Gods contains another set of thrilling sword and amp; sorcery adventures.

The land of Yar-Ammon is old, and even older are its gods. From the dawn of time, when bands of hunter-gatherers roamed the land, men and women shared a sacred bond with the beasts they hunted. The primal people bowed before colossal statues of wild beasts, and the priests of Yar-Ammon wore animal masks in imitation of their gods. Each beast had its own cult; each city its own idol.

In the city of Khadis, where the hyena was sacred, the Great Red Sphinx was placated every year with offerings of treasure and blood. The people heaped silver and gold at the feet of the sphinx and feasted on the intoxicating wines prepared by the priests. And then the drunken revelers fell upon the city and rsquo;s criminals and prisoners of war and hurled them over the city walls to the hyena packs waiting below.

But things are different today. Before his death two and twenty years ago, the High King of Yar-Ammon instituted the worship of an (until then) unknown god, called the First One, and known variously as Zothur, Zoth-Ur, or Xoth-Ur. Taking the title of Kingpriest and Prophet of the First One, the king sent his new priests from Amenti to all the lesser cities of the land, and demanded that the old ways of beast-worship be abandoned.

The emissaries of the Kingpriest were not well received everywhere, but in Khadis, the petty king Akhtesh had recently lost his queen while she was giving birth to Nathifa, the second of the king and rsquo;s daughters. Akhtesh meekly accepted the Kingpriest and rsquo;s decrees, as announced by the sinister priests of Zothur: As a sign of his will to break with the old ways, Akhtesh was forced to exile the priests of the hyena-cult, deface the Great Red Sphinx, and sacrifice his oldest daughter, Nekhtra, who had been groomed to become high priestess of the hyena-cult since early childhood.

But the king and rsquo;s chief steward, Hykshah, was a secret priest of the hyena-cult. He dressed up a slave-girl as Nekhtra and handed her over to suffer death at the hands of the priests of Zothur, while the real princess was taken into the desert and left in the care of a tribe of wild nomads.

Fully revised for the Legend rules system.
