Selected Option:
Eclipse Phase Second Edition is the post-apocalyptic game of transhuman horror. Humanity is enhanced and improved, but also battered and bitterly divided. Technology allows the re-shaping of bodies and minds, but also creates opportunities for oppression and puts the capability for mass destruction in the hands of everyone. And other threats lurk in the devastated habitats of the Fall, dangers both familiar and alien. In this harsh setting, the players participate in a cross-faction conspiracy called Firewall that seeks to protect transhumanity from threats both internal and external.

EP2_StartingOut.png

Along the way, they may find themselves hunting for prized technology in a gutted habitat falling from orbit, risking the hellish landscapes of a ruined earth, or following the trail of a terrorist through militarized stations and isolationist habitats. Characters may even find themselves stepping through a Pandora Gate, a wormhole to distant stars and the alien secrets beyond.

What's New in EP2?

We focused on improving and simplifying the existing Eclipse Phase system, not re-inventing the wheel. Changes include:

Faster Character Creation — A package-buy character creation system lets people build characters quickly without missing essentials.

Streamlined Resleeving — An aptitude-linked pool system means that skills don’t need to be recalculated when a character resleeves (switches bodies).

Updated Gameplay — We've reduced the number of skills and made them easier to acquire. Gear costs are replaced with a system that works the same whether you are buying gear, acquiring it with rep favors, or nano-fabbing. Combat, hacking, and other systems are also updated.

Four Sample Teams — Pre-fabbed teams — two firewall teams, a gatecrashing ops team, and a criminal ops team — can be dropped right into a game and serve as examples of balanced parties.

Redesigned Book — A spread-based organization keeps material close-at-hand with less page-flipping.

Awards & Accolades

The first edition of Eclipse Phase won numerous awards (2010 Origins Award for Best RPG, 2010 ENnie Gold for Best Writing, and 2010 ENnie Silvers for Best Cover Art and Product of the Year) and was critically acclaimed for the innovation and depth of its setting. The Eclipse Phase line is recognized for its creativity, world-building, amazing artwork, and high production standards.

First Edition Compatibility: The SolArchive

Most first-edition source material is compatible with EP2: Sourcebooks such as Sunward, Rimward, Gatecrashing, Panopticon, Firewall, Zone Stalkers, Argonauts, and The Stars our Destination are 95% compatible. Some of the morphs, gear, and other rules provided in their Game Information sections will be outdated, but are easily convertible. We call these EP1-but-highly-compatible books the SolArchive.

When you buy Eclipse Phase Second Edition, please be sure to tick the box that allows us to send you notices about updates—that will let us notify you about updates to the game and special promotions!

There are Gates/Portals, like SG-1, that lead pretty much anywhere. SOMEBODY has to have created them, yes? That aside, you can interact with other transhumans, Corporations, the terrible doomsday AIs that kicked humans OUT of Earth ... even aliens, if that is what you like.

Is the version listed above the actual POD softcover version? Or just a PDF digital download version. Seems kinda ambiguous.

Hey Steve — to go with the recent errata update we're updating the Print on Demand version, which requires it being down for a few weeks while we get new proof copies in and check them out. As soon as I get and approve those proofs, the Print on Demand option will be re-enabled!

Are there any plans to produce a supplement including the additional morphs from the 1e Morph Recognition Guide updated to 2e rules? (I miss the uplift synthmorphs (the Takko!), and I liked the very wide range of options.)
Also, seconding the request for a form-fillable character sheet.
Thanks for all of your work on this game!

Daniyar — the printer that DriveThruRPG uses binds softcover and hardcover books the same way, a glued binding (known as perfectbound.)

If you want a hardcover, we have them available from our own shop!

I'm tempted to buy this, however I am worried that the 2nd edition won't allow you to run the game with one player and one GM.

Hey Rhys — both GM and player will want to be careful with character creation and campaign setup to make sure that the solo character has appropriate resources/contacts to handle things they can't personally accomplish, but there's no reason you can't play one-on-one in EP2!

My wife and I have played many sessions of EP2 with me GMing and her being the player. What worked for us was focusing on story rich adventures with few, but significant combat situations. I created an NPC contact that she could call upon for help when necessary. Our campaign began with her being an investigator on Venus then followed an overarching plot to Mars, the Jovian system and other habitats in the solar system. She eventually joined Firewall when she was ready to do so. Honestly, we have had a lot of fun because EP2 offers so many story possibilities with various factions, threats, government conflicts, scientific advances (whether they are for good, bad, or even both), mysteries, and much, much more. Having digital backups of the character available helps reduce the threat of dying on a mission. The player’s character can return, albeit with some loss of memory, but not forced to create an entirely new character to play.

I see in other discussions that physical copies of the book should be available for order through distributors and game stores at some point (later in 2019 was mentioned). Any news as to when exactly this will be the case?

Hi!
I'm really interested in buying the pdf but... I know I'll buy the hardcover when it will be released and I'd like to know if it's planned to release a pack with both the hardcover and the pdf because it'll be a little too expensive to buy both, even if I really want to know what this new version is made of!

I haven't had the time to completely read through the whole book just yet but just wanted to say that on page 81 "Character Creation Example" at the end of it there's what's supposed to be a link to the sample character Hex but it's just " ▶ ? " instead of any page number.

This second Review doesn't add much either.

But I can understand the problem. From what I've read about this new edition it clearly raises some red flags for me. I can understand the need to simplify resleeving mechanically to allow it to be practical during the sessions. That being said its kind of odd to have a "crunchy system" with "streamlined rules".

And the more I see this happening the more I come to hate this "streamlining fever" that seems to be striking the industry as if each and every game feels the need "dumb down" its rules. In this case, and the character creation seems a elucidative procedure, this streamline just makes the process bland, making the choices of the player in most cases not that relevant (you have to choose a career for you character, which will give you certain Skills which you then can actually choose to alter for others in a later stage in the character creation).

From what I've gathered from this second...See more

Hey Alexandre — we think that even in a crunchy game (especially after a bunch of supplements have been released and the rules expanded over the years) that there's room to streamline while still maintaining crunch. With the amount of positive feedback we got from the package buy system in Transhuman, making it the default in EP2 seemed like a clear choice.

Point buy character creation is still supported in EP2, if you prefer. Skip steps 1-4, assign 400 points of Active skills and 250 points of Know skills, and continue on with steps 5 and beyond of character creation. (This is on p. 47 of the book.)

Hi Adam... You can always simplify and streamline a crunchy system and still maintain it at a robust level. I was referring to the expression on the latest "review" that stated "streamlined rules", which could be erroneous.

As for the Character Creation you took it one step further. While in Tranhumanity ( and this was not the default mechanic) you "suggest replacing duplicates with a skill from the same category", which lends itself more into the whole life path like sequence (even if ever more simplified) we have on the second Edition. But that "suggestion" is not present in this second edition, only the very general limitation that Know skills should be changed for other know skills. This is what I find at opposite terms with the whole life path idea.

In any case thank you for your answer Adam.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
