GunFrame: Anime Mecha Battle Game

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

Gleaming white mecha and technicolour explosions; the swing of mighty steel fists; the krak-krak-krak of anti-tank guns slung like rifles; a cloud of missiles raining down on an exposed mecha before it deftly rolls out of the way or meets its fiery doom. Young pilots, grizzled veterans and the tangled web of relationships that play out against the backdrop of war and clashing robots.

GunFrame is a fast-playing, exciting and tactically challenging miniature wargame. It has been built from the ground-up to let you play out the spectacle of mecha-on-mecha combat as portrayed in your favourite anime. Use any mecha miniatures to engage in small clashes between a handful of robots, or all-out battles with mecha supported by conventional units including infantry, tanks and aircraft. This complete game also includes rules for building your own units, transforming and combining mecha, unusual environments including underwater and space, and more than seventy upgrade abilities to customise your mecha and pilots.

Gear up, strap in and launch your gunframe - it's time for war!

The Basics:

  • Skirmish miniature game
  • Two or more players
  • Simple dice pool mechanic
  • 3'x3' playing area
  • Abstract scale - use 6mm to 28mm figures
  • 1-2 hours playing time

The Features:

  • Game play that focuses on manoeuvre and reaction
  • Flexible unit construction rules that let you create and field any mecha you want
  • Build and fight with transforming and combining mecha
  • Rules for pilot relationships, including buddies, lovers, rivals and nemesis!
  • Conventional units including infantry, tanks and flyers
  • Twelve missions to challenge your mecha pilots
  • Environmental conditions to spice up your battles
  • Rules for mecha battles in space
  • Optional rules for morale, crippled mecha and occupying structures
  • Three OVA settings with premade mecha to show you just what is possible

Check out the PDF preview to get a good idea of what the game involves - the rules cover a lot of ground, but are straightforward, flexible and very easy to get into.

Layered PDF - note that the PDF is layered, so you can turn off the background and/or images to make printing a little more forgiving (or hit the greyscale option!).

From the designer:

I set out to create a miniature battle game that captured the feel of anime mecha combat, without bogging down in long lists of moves, modifiers or special equipment. The game had to be flexible enough to allow the use of any miniature figures, and not be restricted by a range of figures or scale - afterall we all have our favourite miniatures, and our favourite anime, and I wanted the rules to cope with it all! As a result there are some abstractions in the rules, and whenever there was a choice between "realistic" and "cool" I always went for the cool option.

GunFrame is most definitely a "skirmish" game, where players will field a half dozen mecha, perhaps supported by a similar number of infantry, tanks or flyers. The relatively small model count and alternating activation means that players are always engaged, and every action in every turn can be pivotal. The focus on missions means that it is never enough to just slaughter the enemy, and you have to push towards objectives quickly and decisively, while preparing for your opponent's inevitable counter attack!

Ultimately, I set out to design a game that felt more like giant robot samurai than one-hundred ton walking tanks, where I could use any figure in my collection, and enjoy a game over an easy afternoon and a cold beer. You can build units that represent pretty much any anime franchise you like, and games can easily be played in a couple of hours. If you enjoy giant robot anime, pushing miniature figures around a table, and having a laugh with your friends, GunFrame is well worth your consideration.

Could someone tell me how good it would work as a quick streamlined alternative for Battletech and Heavy Gear Blitz?
Preferably handling a 10-15 mecha on each side.
Would it work well?

Hi, the game is more streamlined than those others mentioned, but with 10+ mechs per side your game is probably still going to take a couple of hours.

just play cav strike operations by talon games instead

Great job. I busted out some Clicky mechs from WK and had a short intro game with the family. I love the customization. If you have a campaign rule system in mind, I'd love to add that to the mix. I've been prepping lists for Mobile Suit Gundam and it's really great to be able to just use the anime as a guide to the build / what units can do and not tech specs. You could make a damn fine spaceship game on the bones of this too. Well done.

Thanks Jordan! I have some notes on a campaign system, but every time I begin writing it becomes a whole new game. :)
I agree about the spaceship game - another thing for my “to do” list!

I'm interested, in that I'd love a mecha ruleset for 'theatre of the mind' other than Mekton Zeta Plus. I want the customization, the anime 'feel' and such, but don't think my group's into minis tactics, they're in it for the RP. How well would this engine work for that?

This is very much a mini game and I am not sure how much mileage you will get using it for theatre of the mind type play. Have you checked out Chris Perrin’s “Mecha” RPG?

Will this system work with, say, 1/144 or 1/100 scale plastic giant robots?

It should do - the game was primarily play tested with 1/250, 6mm and 10mm figures, and is quite flexible. I used a mix of manufacturers and scales (including 28mm figures) in testing. If your figures are particularly large you might want to increase ranges for aesthetic reasons. As a guide, units move 4-7 inches in an action and ranges cap out at 24”. I hope this helps (feel free to ask further questions to clarify!).

I was wondering about that myself. The description says 6mm to 28mm, I assumed it meant like the figure was 6mm to 28mm tall. But then I remember reading the rules about having tanks and human infantry... if a human mini was 6mm, a 1/144 or 1/100 scale model kit might work. I haven't tried playing Gunpla yet so I can't tell if the measurements need to be tweaked.

Thanks Nathan!
After a quick read through I think this will work for some quick 3v3 action. Might have to play with the measurements a bit, but i'll let you know how things work out!

Here are my initial impressions from reading through the book (I have yet to play it). The book layout is very clean and easy to follow. The rules are very well written. The system itself is very simple and easy with a lot of flexibility for creating some truly unique mechas. There are a lot of optional advanced rules for people who want more meaty stuff like morale, crippled status and building interactions. I think the system will be up on systems I like along with Gaslands, Song of Blades and Heroes and Open Combat.

Thanks Brian V! It has been a labour of love for the past twelve months. Let me know if you find any issues with the book, or any rules confusing and I will do my best to address and/or clarify.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
