The Weird That Befell Drigbolton

Something fell. A sickly gloaming lit up the night like mock daylight, just for a monent, and then the hills trembled. Now, an alien entity lies brooding in a crater gouged out of the moor. Local folk are enraptured with the toothsome jelly exuded by this being, but are blind to the true nature of the events unfolding in their rustic little backwater.

The Weird That Befell Drigbolton is an investigative, event-based module for characters of 3rd to 5th level involving: a fallen star, frothing masses of pink jelly, manna fever, religious fervour, a warped manor house, psychedelic star-debris slowly twisting the nature of reality around it.

  • Area map (a single six-mile hex) with 11 detailed, weird locations.
  • A gone-wrong manor house "dungeon" with 16 encounter areas.
  • Descriptions of the people and locations in the hamlet of Drigbolton.
  • Charts delineating the unfolding weirdness over a seven day period.
  • Guidelines for different directions the referee might choose to take things in, in the longer term. (The events in this module could easily be used to kick-off a much longer series of adventures, as the PCs and other powers in the region wrangle with the consequences of a heavenly body on earth.)
  • Random event tables, including encounters, environmental oddities, and caches of loot.
  • Mini bestiary with over 20 new monsters. (Actually, nothing in this module is "standard". You won't find any of this stuff in your trad monster manuals.)
  • Cheat-sheets summarising the module for quick reference at the table.
  • Statted for Old-School Essentials, usable with any vintage fantasy game.

While this adventure is set on the fringes of the monster-haunted forest, Dolmenwood, the hamlet of Drigbolton and the strange goings-on there can easily be placed in any weird fantasy campaign.

There are essentially two waves of material from Necrotic Gnome:
1. Older print-on-demand books (2018 and earlier), mostly written for Labyrinth Lord.
2. Newer high quality print run books (2019 on), written for Old-School Essentials and with a strong focus on usability at the table.

The older material is considered legacy, so we only publicise the newer books. The Weird That Befell Drigbolton is part of the legacy wave. We'll probably do a revised version of it at some point, bringing it up to the same usability standards and physical quality (sewn binding hardcover) as our newer books.

Hope that helps!

It seems really hard to accidentally seig heil in the front cover of your book...

We felt it was just a cool looking geometric design. We didn't know of any associations with it and fixed it (many years ago) when it was pointed out.

What's up with the nazi symbol on the title page? It's not in the preview version.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Sun_(symbol) It's not some ancient and obscure symbol the nazis adopted and perverted, it's literally Himmler's pet logo, even if some later edgy satanists borrowed it.

Just to be clear, I really don't think you're a nazi, or intentionally using their symbols.

Yeah, someone pointed this out some time ago and we changed it. If your print copy has this design, I guess it's an older copy.

That's good to hear! The current download version still seems to have it, which is what confused me, maybe the site's playing up and giving me the older file. I'll check the library when I'm not on my phone.

v3 of the PDF has the new title page design and is the current version available here at DriveThruRPG. If you look in your library, it should be there for download.

I'm only seeing The_Weird_That_Befell_Drigbolton_v2.pdf and Cheat_Sheets.pdf, both in the library and on this page. I'll contact support.

I've seen a video-review of this book with hardcover, but I can't find the option here. Is a mistake? Thanx!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
