Physical artifacts are wonderful at the gaming table.  From dice to counters to sheets, we as gamers love to have tools and items to help us play more effectively.  Spells are one of those things that we have to look up constantly and it slows the game down.  So what if you have cards for your spells?  You could go through your deck (spell list) and select the spells you prepare for the day, with handy information on duration, casting time, effects, and material components.

You can buy pre-made cards, but they aren't cheap and you can't customize them with house rules or make your own special cards for abilities or spells.  What about items? What if you need several Healing Potions?  What if more than one person splashed Bard and you need more than one Cure Wounds card?

Make your own.  It's easier than you think.

There is a FREE program called Magic Set Editor that lets you make your own Magic The Gathering cards.  The problem is that you need a template specific to 5th edition DND, with the right fields, icons, and backgrounds...

That's what you are buying here.  This is a Template for Magic Set Editor that lets you make your own 5th Edition DND cards.  Even better, I've already done the work on over 140 spells and items in the CORE rules and am including them as well.  See the sample PDF below for samples of what cards you can make.  You can then print as many as you like.

These templates include:

  • Themes for all PHB classes
  • Various card colors, including black, red, green, yellow, blue, grey, purple, and teal, with gold & silver trim
  • Specific card types for Spells and for Items (general and charged), with custom fields.

Note: These templates work with Magic Set Editor, a free program that allows you to create your own card sets and export or print the card images.  YOU MUST INSTALL MAGIC SET EDITOR to use these.

Please View the README in the zip file for full instructions and Version changes.

IMPORTANT COPYRIGHT NOTICE:  You are buying the templates for these files only.  NO card text is being sold.  You are responsible for entering your own card data.

I cannot get some of the card sets to load up. I downloaded them, put them into the MSE file, and some, like the paladin load up fine, but some, like the ranger and wizard, do not. Any suggestions?

Any luck? I'm thinking about buying this and I don't want to if there are issues.

Hey Joseph. Not sure what the issue is. I just double-checked the link in the Readme file and downloaded the .mse-set file. When I double-click it opens fine. https://i.imgur.com/JGalWRF.jpg

Perhaps you can try re-installing? Make sure the files are in the right place. If you still have issues, email me at: daniel@educatedgamer.net We'll get you squared away via hangout or something.

I think it would be great if you could add images for the backsides of the cards, which would add a very nice finishing touch to the card

Just bought these and the templates look great, but I did not get the 140 spells and items you made from the CORE rules. All I got was the data, the fonts, 2 word docs of blank templates and the read-me file. Thanks for help figuring this out and cheers for making these

They are in a link via the Readme document. Download each separately and open them AFTER you have installed MSE and the templates. They should be called Druid Spells.mse-set, warlock spells.mse-set, etc.

Version 3 Changes:
* Updated Readme.html to include link to YouTube instructional video
* Changed the Top Left icon in circle to be a level selector, to make spell levels easier to see at a glance. Action icons weren't as helpful.
* Tightened up all background frame graphics to create more editing room. Lessened the curvature of the trim.
* Moved Duration, Range, Description fields up a bit. Enlarged Description field slightly to reclaim more editing space (approx 10 pixels).
* School - Level at bottom changed to School - Domain. Allows classes with bonus Oath, Circle, or Domain spells to indicate the source next to the school.
* Tags field just below the spell name for things like Concentration or Ritual. I still tend to use (R) in the title and a different background color for rituals, but it's now explicitly stated on the card if desired.

Just a couple comments:

The default dropdown menu for spell school has "bard" and "cleric" listed for some reason and not "abjuration" or "conjuration".
And things that would be nice to add:

* a visual indicator for spell level.

* a visual element for concentration / ritual tags, whether a text dropdown or an image.

* a separate place to list material components, maybe a small box below the components dropdown.

* a text box below the spell name to fill to indicate if it's a domain/origin/circle/pact spell.

It's very simple to make these changes by yourself. All you need to know is here: http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net/node/5678
I would recommend a text editor like notepad++.

Hey Kevin. I've incorporated all of your changes in Version 3! Thanks for the valuable feedback. For material components, I widened the field so it should support more text, like "V,S,M* (1,000gp)". See change notes above, and download the new version 3 zip to see.

Hey these templates are great. Is it possible to change the language on the templates (like school, components...)? I'm a first time german dm and would love to use these with the german version of the game.

Ja, das ist durchaus möglich, allerdings nur mit etwas Eigeninitiative. Man muss dazu nur die entsprechenden Einträge in den Dateien "game" und "style" ändern. Ich empfehle dafür das Programm Notepad++

No. I use colored card sleeves with a MTG card for stiff backing. This lets me print on regular paper!

Unfortunately the Magic Set Editor is a MicroSoft only product. My friend who recommended it did not include this information, and neither did the post here on the DMG. If you use Mac, do not purchase.

Recent purchaser and was wondering, does anyone know a way to further customize the spell cards, in terms of the action and attack type drop downs? I'm making Feat & Class feature cards so it would be great to be able to add in a symbol for each class and maybe a standard avatar for the feats.

All help appreciated, thanks!

Hey Bev. Sorry for the late reply. You can go into the Magic Set Editor 2data5E_Tint_symbols.mse-include folder and see the files there. The easiest way would be to just swap pictures and keep the file names.

If you want to add entirely new ones, you will also need to edit the Game file (in 5E_Tint.mse-game folder) to change the choices, and edit the Style file in each class's folder to edit the file name/locations. It's time consuming but possible.

Hi Daniel, I think I've discovered a bug after updating to the 2.1 version. For the School dropdown on the bottom of the spell cards, Abjuration and Conjuration have been replaced with Bard and Cleric respectively. At first I thought the folder may have become corrupted somehow, but after uninstalling MSE2 (and deleting all leftover files) and then reinstalling both MSE2 and your templates, the issue has persisted. Any idea how I can fix this problem?

Oh I see! Well I'll be... you are right. Edit: updated the files and sent emails to customers with patch info. If you don't want to re-install you can just replace the Game file in the data > 5E_Tint.mse-game folder with this one: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AtwIXqdRnFEKeSThWEKw2xtLwG4

Daniel,
I finally purchased your set and I am glad I did. Enjoying it so far. I have one question in regards to magic items that Im hopping you have a solution to. Magic ammunition.... You currently have an item card with "charges" but what Im looking for is a card to make for say a quiver of +1 arrows. Then the player can just tic them off as the use them.
Any help would be great!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
