Classic Fantasy - TDM500

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Classic Fantasy brings Old School dungeon crawls to the Mythras rules. This 336 page book contains everything you need to emulate the fun of class and level-based adventuring, against the classic coterie of monsters, with the classic armoury of spells! If you've ever wanted to convert those old dungeon modules to a d100 system, then Classic Fantasy is for you.

Packed with information and new rules additions, Classic Fantasy features a different approach to character creation based on classes such as the bard, cavalier, fighter, magic user, paladin and thief. Choose your race - human or demi-human - and then customize according to class, race and personal preference. If you're a magic user or cleric, the new magic rules for Arcane and Divine spells take the old staples such as Magic Missile, Charm, Fireball and more, and tailor them for the nuances of the Mythras system.

Or, for the more combat-oriented, the Classic Fantasy rules provide detailed miniatures-based combat adaptations for the traditional battle-board, complete with guidance on facings, positioning, and handling detailed movement.

And of course, no book like this would be complete without monsters to kill and treasure to take! All the old favourites are accounted for, from Basilisks to Displacer Cats, Grey Ooze to Gelatinous Masses, Kobolds, Gnolls, Hobgoblins and more. Forty pages of treasure and magic items helps you equip even the deepest dungeon with enough loot to satisfy the keenest adventuring party.

This is not a standalone game. Games Masters and players will need access to either the Mythras rules to play Classic Fantasy (although other d100 rule systems may suffice).

So break out the Cheetos and Mountain Dew - Classic Fantasy is Here!

Are we going to have the option to get a physical copy of this title again? I really prefer having a solid copy for reading purposes! *fingers crossed*

Don't know why we can't get this hardcover printed, isn't DTRPG print on demand?

Still hoping for any word on Unearthed Companion release too.

I notice there is mention of the 'Companion Unearthed' but nothing published by that title. Is that ever going to happen?

POD please. As much as I like LuLu, their hardcovers are not nearly as durable as DTRPG.

I recently bought this book; however, I have to say that after looking at it for about a week, I am not happy. It takes away many of the things that I really like about Mythras, such as weapon traits that are built into a combat style with weapons. Now, class dictates everything that is important for a character. To make matters worse, it seems very restrictive: certain races can only be certain classes, so an elven beserker is a no-go without DM approval. Also, non-humans are all homogenous races; culture and race for them are the same thing, which is strange in the contemporary era. I guess this may be the "classic" part of the fantasy, but it is far from what I want in a game. I also do not like that humans get an extra experience buff, which means how good or bad they are completely depends on the DM's fiat (for example giving out one experience roll a session makes humans twice as good, while waiting every four or so makes them drastically worse). And that is not even looking at multiclass, which...See more

Here's the thing, that's why you have Mythras and the various campaign books for Mythras. Classic Fantasy is indeed trying to capture that classic Class based old school DnD (older editions). So yeah it's gonna be more restrictive etc.

I just got Mythras and I'm loving it! What does "Classic Fantasy" add? Do i have to use classes in Classic Fantasy (I hate classes. That's one of the main reasons i moved from DnD to Mythras).

While it uses the term Class, they operate as do Professions and incorperate the rules found in the Cults and Brotherhoods chapter. So they are essentually, professions with special abilities. Nothing really new to Mythras other than presentation.

We've never had Classic Fantasy as POD on Drivethru. If you'd like a hard copy, you can buy one from The Design Mechanism's webstore. There are plenty in stock.

It would be really really good to see this become properly stand alone from the base Mythras game, right now it's two pretty huge books and quite awkward to know what is relevant from each book honestly.

I feel like the multiclassing penalties are pretty harsh right now, you need very good attributes to access multiclassing anyway (which is fair enough) and then on top you also suffer negative xp all the time as well as suffering reduced increases for xp and have a harder time ranking up.

I've seen some comments in forums about perhaps getting an update to fix various things with the game? Is that stil likely to happen?

We'll certainly release an updated version of Classic Fantasy fixing a few things with errata updates and especially correcting some issues with the table graphics. We'll do that as part of getting the game ready for Print on Demand production via Drivethru.

Will we make it a standalone game? At this stage, unlikely. It would push the page count up to a level where POD would strain its limits, unless we took a different approach, and split the game into multiple volumes such as a players' guide, GMs' guide and, erm, a bestiary.

But thank you for the comments and thoughts. There may be something we can do to help clarify what applies from where in an easy fashion, so we'll take that away.

thanks for replying so quickly, really useful feedback too.

I wonder how comfortably the arcane and divine magic would fit into "regular" mythras, mostly wonder this due to kind of preferring the classless systems, getting a kind of balance of th two would be the ideal.

I see Rodney L (the author) on here so I'm going to ask about the difference between this Classic Fantasy book and the Classic Fantasy BRP. I own Classic Fantasy BRP.

The systems are different, but only in minor ways, it is still D100 (BRP) at its core. The mythras version is a complete product, at least up to the higher "levels". It contains everything the BRP version does, plus a literary* ton of monsters and magic items. Classic Fantasy is also very well supported, one supplement and seven adventures already available for purchase, and many more under construction. Check out the free PDF of Mythras Imperative. It has the basics of the Mythras system in a small easy to digest format.

* A "literary" ton is a measurement of PDFs in their digital form, and in no way related to an actual unit of weight.

There's a fair amount of work involved in getting Classic Fantasy ready for POD. All the tables (and there's a lot) need an overhaul, and we'd want to incorporate errata too. It will happen, but not for a while I'm afraid.

I am so sorry for the pain you have gone through; please forgive my ignorance in this matter. I hope peace and happiness find you and keep you well.

I am so thrilled to hear about your continued work! I love Mythras as is but Classic Fantasy has made it so much better for me. Having received this reassurance that the Companion is moving along steadily towards release is Extremely Exciting!

Keep up the great work! I cannot wait to purchase and play this soon to be released masterpiece!

Thank you in advance!

Hi Keith, thanks for the kind words. Yes, the Companion is still coming, and I'm working on it daily. If all goes well, it will be turned in for edit and layout end of summer/beginning of fall. Unfortunately, I has some real life trauma last year that put it on hold. All is well now and it's looking great!!!

Hello P S,

Sorry for the late reply. We plan on releasing all of our products via POD here. Some are available now, others are forthcoming. Regarding Classic Fantasy, we hope to allow POD next year after we take care of the tables making them easier on the eyes, and incorporate the errata.

The table shading in this book is pretty brutal on the eyes. Any chance it will ever be revised so that the tables match the graphical style of the "Expert Set" (which is far more legible)?

Hi Matt, sorry for the late reply. Yes, while I cannot say when it will be updated, it will be updated. This will allow us to fix any errata that has been brought to our attention at that time as well. I'll let you know more when I find out it's been put into the rotation.

This system brings back a feature I want to stay away from: class. I think classes are too restricting and should be avoided altogether. I'll pass on Classic Fantasy.

Just curious as to whether you actually play Mythras and saw the word 'class' and jumped to conclusions, or your new to the system all together? As Classic Fantasy simply uses the Professions from Mythras and adds some special abilities to each. It is no more restrictive then normal Mythras, and way less so then most any other system that uses classes. If you did research the book and decided to avoid Classic Fantasy, that's fine. I just thought I would offer some insight if you didn't know. Happy Gaming.

Excellent product. Looks like an easy conversion to any D20 product (by that I mean, convert D20 to D100). Thanks for the Rank/Level conversion factor. Always wanted a system that integrated Classic fantasy/D&D with the D100 rules. D&D led to "invincible" characters, while D100... not so much. This is very reminiscent of Elric/Stormbringer as well.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
