About the Document:

With some of my homemade campaigns, including a future DM’s Guild project, there is a need for a system for building and maintaining a city. This document takes a mechanic from Pathfinder and converts it into D&D 5th Edition. This public release is for Beta Testing and further refinement purposes.

About the Author:

David Foxfire has been playing—and Dungeon Mastering—in D&D 5th Edition since it’s playtest, and is using the system to create his own homemade campaigns and even his own Campaign Setting known as Æthercoil.  Before that time, he has been doing web comics and illustration, of which his artstyle will become part of these submittions to this site.

This is the ubiquitous First Submission here in the OneBookShelf family of web sites, with hopefully many more to come. As such, this might be chock-a-block of errors, bugs, and other nefarious flotsam and jetsam.  Any feedback that helps me improve as a contributor is appreciated.  Oh, and the occasional Grammar Check too.

You might wonder why I didn’t put this in the DM’s Guild, with the way I formatted it.  I initially wanted to put it there, but the Terms of Service dictate that documents—and the many mechanics, options, and other items—posted there cannot be used in non DM’s Guild material, such as original Campaign Worlds.  That is what I wanted to do with this and all the other future documents.  Hence my using DriveThruRPG instead.

Future submissions will include additional character options and other beta-testing documents, on the way to creating the playtest for Æthercoil.  Feel free to watch my web site to keep up to tabs on the progress.

Notes and Opinions for the Author's Consideration
#1: It's fantastic that you're doing this, and I genuinely think this is good and much-needed undertaking, despite my following barrage of criticism. I encourage everyone who reads this to at least give it a good read-through, despite its rather rough appearance
#2: You forgot the Magister in your table of administrative roles (p. 4)
#3: The Caster's Tower should probably cost 30 BP, not GP (p. 8)
#4: The Dump and the Tannery should be able to coexist adjacent to each other, at least in my mind. The tannery lads would be used to stench, wouldn't they? (p. 8 & 10)
#5: One would think a Shop would help the economy, right? Maybe not in the Pathfinder version (I honestly don't know), but it feels more logical to me at least. (p. 10)
#6: Roads cost, again, BP, not GP (p. 12)
#7: I assume the map will be added in later versions, but you should make it a priority since I find it difficult to follow how you mean (p. 13)...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
