Mythras Core rules

Mythras is the new name for an older game, but while the name might have changed, the system remains the same, but presented in an updated format with new interior artwork and layout design, along with some new content (Special Effects, small tweaks to the rules, and Spirit Combat Effects). In fact, we've managed to pack more into a smaller space, and reduced the price accordingly.

For those new to the game, Mythras is a percentile system. In Mythras your characters are defined by their culture, career, community, background, comrades, skills, magic and cults. Progression is through skill advancement – not levels or similarly abstract concepts. As your characters adventure and quest, their capabilities improve and their relationships deepen and strengthen. Players and Games Masters have complete flexibility over what can be achieved, and the way characters develop is entirely dependent on choices players make, depending on their characters’ aspirations and motivations.

Games Masters receive a huge amount of support through the Mythras rules. All the concepts and game mechanics are explained clearly with options and considerations explored and presented for ease of use. You need only this rulebook for many years of exciting and imaginative play.

What’s in this book?

Mythras contains everything needed for play:

  • Character Creation – building your character through the familiar characteristics, through developing culture and community relationships, choosing a career, and gaining basic equipment according to social class.
  • Skills – What they do, how they work, and how to handle many different circumstances (degrees of difficulty, critical and fumbled rolls, opposed skills, group skills, and so on).
  • Economics and Equipment – Arms and armour, tools, clothing, accommodation... everything your character needs as he or she begins on their life of adventure.
  • Combat – Mythras's combat system is unique, dynamic and geared towards adventurous realism. Gaining success over an opponent generates Special Effects that can rapidly turn the course of a fight. Copious advice is presented on balancing combat skills and styles, through to handling rabble and underlings.
  • Magic – No less than five very different forms of magic are presented and explored, with complete lists of spells and effects. How magic is defined and used in different fantasy settings and campaign worlds is examined in detail.
  • Cults and Brotherhoods – Religious, magical and secular organisations, as well as other kinds of societies are detailed the Cults and Brotherhoods rules. Cults are an important  part of Mythras, and they are covered in significant detail along with templates for many different kinds of cult, order, school and so on for Games Masters and Players to build upon for their own campaigns.
  • Creatures - Over 50 creatures are fully detailed, including several non-human player character races. This chapter also offers complete guidance on how to use creatures effectively in Mythras games, and notes on how to design your own.
  • Games Mastery – Copious notes, thoughts and guidance on how to Games Master Mythras games. Areas for consideration are summarised, options explored, and different ways of using the rules offered. An invaluable chapter for new and old RuneQuest Games Masters alike…
  • Anathaym’s Saga – Numerous examples of play and how the rules are used are provided through Anathaym’s Saga. Follow Anathaym, her sister Kara, Mju the Mystic and Kratos the Sorcerer as the Mythras rules are illustrated and explained.

I haven't heard about any plans to make a Mythras bestiary, but most of the setting expansions (Mythic Babylon, Mythic Britain, Luther Arkwright, etc) all have a good number of monsters specific to that setting - plus there's a pretty good selection of monsters in the basic book.

If you play online, there's a fantastic tool built and maintained by a member of the Mythras community called the Mythras Encounter Generator which provides a database of THOUSANDS of NPCs and creatures which people have transcribed from older versions of Runequest and Mythras adventures. It sort of makes a bestiary unnecessary to run a game.

Monster Island is the de facto additional bestiary for Mythras. It's an excellent supplement outside of the new creatures as well.

Yeah, its quite confusing. I love when the developer puts notes in or names the file with a date at the end. Like Mythras Core Book 22feb2023 for example.

Both are POD. The version available from the TDM store direct is printed by Lulu and has a matte cover finish, but otherwise has the same print specifications as the DTRPG version.

Could the publisher offer DriveThruRPG a higher resolution file for Print, so that it can be ordered in Premium? The black and white paper weight and resolution really aren't the greatest...

It's not worth printing in Premium, because the main difference between premium and standard colour is the colour saturation. But I agree that it would be great to print in standard colour.

Honestly, until they change the font type to a more readable type, it's not even worth it. It's terrible font type. (sigh)

Agreed. Although it looks like they might be taking steps forward with recent releases (like Fioracitta), readability remains an issue across much of the line. I have the 2016 printing of the core book and would love to buy an updated version, but I'm not spending another dime until we have a more legible font.

If you buy the print version here, you get the PDF free of charge. You'll be notified if the PDF is updated, and the updated version will also be free. We keep major changes to the core rules to an absolute minimum and have no need for any further errata. You can buy the book with confidence.

Just wondering but will there ever be a color version of Mythras? And if Mythras ever gets revised again, could it be redone with a larger font? There are tables and charts that are hard to read.

As I don't have RuneQuest Glorantha, I can't say with 100% certainty, but as both games have their roots in original RuneQuest, then there is going to be a reasonably good degree of compatibility (I'm sure people who have RQ:G and Mythras can comment further). There will be a lot of differences though. Character Creation, Combat and Magic will likely work quite differently. There will be differences in skill names and how some skills function. RQ:G does, I believe, use an additional degree of success (the Special) while Mythras has only Critical/Success/Fail/Fumble. Obviously RQ:G is tied very firmly to Glorantha, whereas Mythras has no specific setting, and is designed for you to create your own setting or use one of our published settings.

The lineage is a bit more complicated. For five years, our company produced RuneQuest under license, and we published it as a generic system without tying it to the world of Glorantha. In 2015, we rebranded the game as Mythras, but it's remained a relatively generic game. Sp while Mythras is an older, pre-RQ:G version of RuneQuest, RuneQuest: Glorantha is a different game with rules differences and, of course, the rich Glorantha setting.

Mythras has a healthy and wide range of settings, ranging from our Mythic Earth supplements (Britain, Rome, Constantinople and, soon, Babylon), to Science Fiction (Worlds United) and even taking in Urban Fantasy (After the Vampire Wars). It's fair to say that Mythras and RuneQuest: Glorantha have a common ancestor, but are on different branches of the family tree.

I just purchased the PDF of Mythras. There are four different files. Two of them say, "Revision 3, October 2018". One has a file name with the word "Interactive" in it (9.87 MB), and one does not (18.5 MB). What is the difference?

Thanks.

I just checked the Aeon Games site for this title, and there it mentions that the book is 336 pages long, but here it's listed as only 304 pages.
1) Is that due to different printings with additions or errata or some such?
2) If there are multiple versions, which would be the most recently updated?
3) Is there a color version of this book?
4) And, finally, is the version sold on Aeon Games' site a traditionally printed book or a PoD?

Hi Paul,

1. It could be a typo: the Aeon printing uses the same files as TDM, so should be the same page count. It shouldn't contain any extra content.
2. We've updated Mythras twice with minor corrections and errata fixes, so the 3rd printing is the current version, which you'll find here on DTRPG. I don't know if Aeon have updated their printings yet; you should ask them via their website.
3. No, all printings are b/w.
4. Again, one for Aeon to answer. I believe its offset, but they can be more specific.

Drivethru's POD service is experiencing some delays due to COVID-19. You should raise a ticket via Customer Service so they can investigate. If it helps, I've only just received notification that a print copy of Lyonesse for one of our contributors, also ordered about 2 weeks, has only just shipped.

I'm sorry you find the font size too small, but it's not something that's increased easily without completely laying out the book again and increasing page count.

As to errata - Mythras is fully up to date with errata fully incorporated, as of November last year, so I'm not sure what you mean by saying that 'errata appears to be beyond us'. The actual errata list isn't very long, and we've even made available the changes in a separate PDF.

Hi Lawrence - Just to make things clear, if I order the POD version will it be produced from the PDF that was updated with the errata last November or will it be the same 2016 version of the book that can be bought on the Aeon Games and Design Mechanism website?

Also, what is the difference (if there's any) quality wise (paper, printing, binding, cover) between the DriveThruRPG version and the one that can be bought on the Aeon Games and Design Mechanism website?

Wow I have to agree. The font size is way too small. I understand the layout and page count issues, but I would say "readability" is probably a more important consideration. And in regard to PDF's... who cares about page count?

I know. I've tried the upload about 5 times with the same results. Something being mangled on the DTRPG end, and if the current upload has the same issues, I'll be raising a trouble ticket. I'me very sorry for the issues; everything works fine on my end, and then goes awry at the upload end. I have no idea when DTRPG would be reducing a 40Mb file to a quarter of it's usual size.

Not trying to be mean, but the answer to your question is literally in the first sentence.

"Mythras is the new name for an older game, but while the name might have changed, the system remains the same, but presented in an updated format with new interior artwork and layout design, along with some new content (Special Effects, small tweaks to the rules, and Spirit Combat Effects)."

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
