Is there a B/X cleric or wizard in the works?

I have some notes on how such books might look, but they're not in the works. Kind of a "maybe one day" project.

This seems very useful. However, I get stuck at the spell song ability. Isn't that a much worse ability than Memorize spell in every way? Less versatile, does not scale with level and a absolutely crippling one turn casting time. What am I missing?

The main differences (apart from what you noted) are that spell song grants access to clerical magic and doesn't restrict the warrior's use of armour. The intention of the two different talents is really about flavour, though.

(Looking at this again, I notice that the design note under memorize spell is incorrect: there is a talent that grants (limited) access to clerical magic.)

Thank you for your answer! It makes sense for the B/X Warrior. But the rouge version still gets to chose between Sleep as a level 1 spell with normal spell casting times, and a 6th level ability with a 10 minute casting time and a sound dependancy. Or is there something else I'm missing? If not, I still do find this basic idea very useful, but I might have to figure out something more to my tastes for the bards and skalds ...

Anyhow, thanks again for your time and inspiring material.

I don't think you're missing anything. As far as I remember, with the Rogue, these different magical talents were just intended as ways of creating different flavoured magical rogues. When you look at them purely in terms of mechanics, they're not really balanced, as you point out. One way of dealing with the imbalance might be to (as the DM) say that only one type of magical talents is available in the campaign, or to tie them into specific factions or guilds in the world that have special entry requirements.

Gavin Norman, are you planning on doing these little books for the other core races/classes? I would like a hard copy of each if you do!

Hi Jon, yes, I have notes for wizards, elves, and dwarves. Unfortunately these books aren't high up on my writing queue, but I expect they'll manifest at some point. Glad you're enjoying the Rogue and Warrior!

I really am enjoying warrior and rogue. I had to ask because I am a completionist. Giving non-human characters a few options sounds good to me.

Absolutely brilliant. The ability to create Rangers, Paladins, etc. is an idea I've toyed around with a lot. You're idea for the Warriors with Talents is better than anything I've come up with.

I intend to buy EVERYTHING put out by NGP. Everything...
The B/X Rogue and the B/X Warrior have now replaced the fighter, paladin, ranger, thief, and assassin in all my games. It plays a nice balance between keeping things appropriately old-school (there are some optional rules in the beginning explaining what skills might be everyman skills) and providing a great list of talents to pick from that will have almost no two warriors alike.
There are some things I was surprised to not see in there (like shield bash for the warrior) but it's not too hard (and even a little fun) for the GM to add more skills to the list.

Just picked this up because I loved your B/X Rogue. Like a lot of it. I noticed a few things and thought I'd shoot my thoughts over to you:

Still reading through it but it jumped out at me on page 3 and page 4 you give conflicting advice on using the Warrior and the Fighter in the same campaign.

Arcane Disavowal is broken in the sense that a fighter who takes it is crippled by no magic weapons or armor. At the very least this ability should grant them ability to harm magic monsters (at least at 4th level) and possibly even provide AC bonuses to compensate what they are missing out on.

As a class ability, Dueling shouldn't be tied to an attribute but provide a flat bonus.

Last Stand says you can take no other actions but attacking. Does that include moving towards enemies, or can they just stand 5' away and ignore you?

I like Succour, though it would be cool if it benefited more from level for each target, like 1d4+1 per 2 levels or something?...See more

Hi Matthew, thanks for your feedback. Some very good points there! To address some of your points:

Arcane Disavowal: the warrior can use magic items associated with a chosen faith. I agree that without this, it's not a good deal at all. The big bonuses to saves against magic were supposed to make up for the reduced access to magic items, but your suggestion of being able to harm magical monsters would be another good bonus to add.

Duelling: it's the same talent as the B/X Rogue has access to and is intended to only be taken by characters who have high DEX (presumably warriors with DEX as their Prime Requisite).

Last Stand: that is a touch unclear, yes. Movement to engage foes in melee is not intended to be prohibited.

Dwarves and Elves: interesting idea. Yes, you could certainly reduce their HD to 1d6 (dwarf) and 1d4 (elf) and allow the choice of a warrior talent or a +2 bonus to hit points at each level. (I actually have some rough notes on B/X Dwarf and B/X...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
