The family is strange. The house is cursed. The weather is dreadful. Welcome to Bedlam Hall.

Powered by the Apocalypse, players take the terrible role of servants for the Blackwood family who are quite… different. The family’s troubles run the gamut between inconvenient relationships to terror-driven fits that can turn bloody and violent. Not quite the best employers to work for, in any sense of the word. Coupled with the house’s own peculiarities and an overwhelming need to maintain one’s own skeletons in the closet, every member of staff has their hands full to say the least.

Can you manage to survive the strange happenings and the family’s unnatural behavior while still keeping the house under control and your references in order? Play to find out (But we wouldn't count on it.)

This game includes:

  • A depressing character creation system that will only define how miserable this experience is going to be.

  • An introductory adventure - "A Simply Dreadful Birthday Party", because what demonstrates true unnatural horror than a children's birthday gathering.

  • Unsettling descriptions of the House, along with unflattering portrayals of the Blackwood family.

  • Guidance on how to cruelly torment your players as the Master of the House, realizing you shan't be invited to game night ever again.

  • A menacing portrait of the Terrible Whatsit. Never mind, never mind. You don't need to know.

Inspired by: Downton AbbeyThe Addams Family, and A Series of Unfortunate Events

For 3-5 doomed players, gameplay generally lasts 2-4 hours or until everyone dies. Horribly.

"The session was miserable. We loved it!" - Stephen Dewey, creator of Ten Candles

Great game!
We're playing right now and all the players are enthusiastic.
I have only one question and, I don't how to contact the designer soo...for "innuendo" move, you have to roll+secret but, "Secret" is not an attribute. Wich bonus do you have to use as "secret"? number of secrets?

Our dearest Mattia -

We are so sorry your players have been enthusiastic about this terrible experience, peer pressure is a dreadful motivator to get involved in activities as a group. This is how unfortunate tattoos are selected, not to mention burying the remains of family members that were accidentally run over with a wheat thresher two or three times. (And we assure you, that was indeed an accident no matter what people may say).

In any event, yes the number of Secrets counts as the additional modifier for Innuendo. A person may have multiple Secrets, which should, of course, be used as often as possible in your favor. If they truly deserve it of course. And they probably do.

ps. Thank you for allowing us to borrow your wheat thresher. It may need a good wash.

Fantastic stuff! I had to immediately buy it as soon as I heard your interview on +1 Forward. It's exactly the game I'm interested in (having previously almost completely written an amateur "How to Host a Murder" along these lines). I'll be using some of the tile art from Mansions of Madness boardgame for rooms in Bedlam Hall, just to help visualise. Maybe some of my victorian age miniatures as well.. Anyhow, very keen to run it now.

Many have said the Internet will usher in the doom of all humanity, we're pleased to know we've done our little part. Thank you for the kind words, Peter.

Two questions:

1) I'm unable to add bookmarks to this PDF in iBooks. I imagine its some kind of security setting at your end as I'm able to do this with most other DriveThruRPG PDFs. Could you update the PDF to allow bookmarking?

2) Is a non-watermarked copy of the playbooks available from somewhere as I'd rather not distribute the copy I got from DTRPG that contains watermarks to players?

Its a great game, but suffers from the lack of an MC sheet with basic things like the MotH Agendas, Moves, the NAmes list, a rooms list etc. Any chance you could add one?

We would be happy to, will keep you posted.

Our dear Declan, your wish has been granted with A Collection of Horrible Accoutrements, which includes a reference sheet for the Master of the House as well as character sheets for general use. We hope this makes your gaming experience less painful... the game is painful enough.

This is a wonderful game, and I'm very pleased to have purchased it. Could we please have a bookmarked version of the PDF, though?

It would also be nice if the resolution were higher on the Playbooks, which are decidedly fuzzy compared to the rules document.

Thank you.

Our dearest John,
We will work on accommodating these requests. The Playbooks were originally created in a much larger size but were compressed in order to provide enough space to include the secret message scrawled on their back more efficiently. We will re-upload and find another method of communication for the what the voices request we impart. Will keep you posted.

Dearest John,
We have uploaded the new playbooks which should be more crisp, like our newly ironed shirt.
Of course, we can't speak about the blood on the collar...we've been sworn to secrecy.

Dear Gentlemen,

The resolution on the new playbooks is as sharp as the carving knife with which we were obliged to dismember poor St. John MacAlaisdar after the unfortunate banquet that I am sure you cannot help but recall, despite our unspoken but heartfelt vow never to mention the dreadful affair ever again. Forgive my breach of protocol in so doing, but accept my fulsome and entirely deserved gratitude.

I remain, sirs and madams, your most obedient servant,
Mr John Deal

Great theme for a game. Planning on using it for one shots and convention games.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
