Revelations in Cold Iron

A New Edition is Coming - and you'll be automatically upgraded!

We are currently working on updating this title to conform to the current version of the Lighthouse System and the sensibilities of the Black Box Manifesto. When the new files become available we will update this title, rather than releasing it as a new product.

In this satirical look at the real world where the good guys are often indistinguishable from the bad guys, players take the role of members of a resistance movement fighting the machinations of an occult fascist oligarchy that is taking over the world. Named for the metal believed to be able to repel, contain, and harm malevolent creatures, Cold Iron uses their own magick to wrest control of reality from those who are attempting to rewrite it.

The Cult of Moloch is an international group of privileged and wealthy individuals with roots stretching back millennia. In the 21st century, their power has become so great that they no longer feel they need to hide in the shadows, manipulating things from behind the scenes. Feeding upon human suffering, they seek to remake the world over in their own image, with the cult’s leaders ruling as monarchs and the rest of humanity nothing more than serfs and slaves.

At its heart, Revelations in Cold Iron explores the themes of compassion versus greed, putting others first versus elevating one’s self, and the needs of the many versus the desires of the few. It asks what constitutes good and evil in the modern era, through the context of defining the value of objective truth versus the subjectivity of sincerely held beliefs.

A Simple Yet Flexible System

No charts, no tables, no variable target numbers. Using standard polyhedral dice, you can resolve character actions quickly without having to look up esoteric mechanics and exceptions to the norm. It’s a system, a way of doing things, not a rigid set of rules. Use it when you need it, ignore it when you don’t, and alter things to suit the needs of your group and the story you’re telling together.

A Rewarding Roleplaying Experience

The players and the guide share control of the story you’re telling. Embrace the opportunity to describe the outcome of your character’s actions, whether they succeed or fail. Do the same for the antagonists! Define what form injuries and other complications take, and how they impact the characters and the story. Play your character to the fullest, and have more influence over the way the adventure unfolds!

Create, Collaborate, and Have Fun

Craft characters and stories using the guidelines provided. There are no finite lists to pick from, and no limitations on what is or isn’t possible aside from what’s appropriate for the story being told! Work together with the guide and the other players to develop relationships between characters and the way subplots and story goal unfold. If your character isn’t in a scene, you can still participate by describing outcomes and defining complications.

Using This Book

The best way to approach this book is to read it through once in its entirety. The information is presented in an order intended to provide the best creative flow. Afterward, you can go back and reference individual sections as needed. The important thing to remember is that this isn’t meant to be a rulebook. It’s a reference to help you and your group tell a story together with as much creativity and imagination, and as little hassle, as possible.

We just resolved an issue with Starlight Manifesto where there were supposed to be four files but only one was showing. Is the same file structure supposed to be there with this game as well, with pdf, epub, mobi, and a jpg cover? I only have the option to download Revelations as a pdf here, so I wanted to make sure. Thanks.

Try it again. If it's still not showing the rest of the files within an hour (sometime it takes time to update), let me know and I'll put in a trouble ticket.

So this totally meta idea came into my mind last night, when I dreamed that I was in a protest march against some scumbags hiding behind riot police in the pay of The Party, and somebody spotted the "I Support Critical Thinking" patch on my backpack and handed me a seditious booklet and a date, time and geocaching coordinates where I would be given the opportunity to meet some people who could take my skills with languages, NLP and hypnosis and turn them into a righteous weapon against brainwashing and the institutionalised enslavement of the world.
The booklet was this one.
Wouldn't it be something to find that this booklet was, in fact, the actual manifesto of Cold Iron, cunningly disguised as a tabletop roleplaying game ...

I gave this a two-star review, but I feel like I should add some context to that. Based on the title, the cover, and the ad copy I was expecting something more like Esoterrorists, or Unknown Armies, or Whispering Vault. Something darker. That's not what this is.

This is more about social media and contemporary politics. It's possible, in my mid-40s, that I'm just too old for it. YMMV.

P.S. Remember that this is fiction. Do not actually Fight the Power. If Fighting the Power was really a good idea, Afghanistan would be a paradise by now. Just a word of advice from an old-timer.

It can get weird, if you use some of Dancing Lights' other documents to enhance the experience. It can also get darker.

And didn't your country start 241-plus years ago because some colonials chose to Fight The Power?

@Alex G, just what I was thinking when I went to bed after posting that.
Also, the French Resistance, during WWII, fought the power to save 1,000 of refugees from a dictator, too.
Countless others have persevered against other Power sources throughout history.

I guess the motto is then that if you are going to fight the power, make sure you're smart enough to win, and that you have a better plan than they do to fix all that's messed up.

Almost there. My only quibble is that in a fight smarts are good, but discipline is better. And "the resistance" is terrible at discipline.

@Kurt- Afghans have fought a bunch of powers, including Greece, Persia, the Mughals, the Britain, Russia, America, and (most of all) each other.

This. Is. Wonderful. I'm so glad this game exists; I plan to play it with some of my more politically involved friends and Fight the Power! (PS how do I review it?)

Found it! I think Drivethru hadn't caught up to the fact that I'd bought the thing. The review has been posted.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
