Hideouts & Hoodlums [Basic 2nd edition]

ADD TO WISHLIST >

How long have you been waiting to combine golden age comic book gaming with old school game rules? Okay, since 1st edition? Well, wait no longer -- because HIDEOUTS & HOODLUMS Second Edition is here! [Note: this is the 2.1 edition with slight alterations and improvements!]

What is H&H 2nd ed.? Well, it's still a d20 game, so it's class- and level-based. It lets you play superheroes, but it's not just a superhero game -- you can play fighters, magic-users, and mysterymen too. The game emphasizes exploration (of hideouts) and character interaction almost as much as combat (vs. hoodlums and other cool stuff).

Why emulate the Golden Age of Comic Books? And so specifically the pre-war years? Comic books were pretty gonzo crazy back then. You could have a dope ring-busting G-Man, a funny animal character, and a planet-hopping galactic explorer all in the same anthology comic book -- back to back! It's that anything-is-possible feel I most wanted to emulate in H&H. Adventures also tended to be short and for small groups of heroes in the Golden Age -- perfect for the time-strapped small group of friends who want to get together to game on weekday evenings.

What's different about H&H in 2nd edition? There are skills now. There are new mobster and trophy types. There is a sample metropolis to use as a home base -- plus lots of tweaking in between.

Why is this a "basic" book? This is everything you need to get your heroes from levels 1 up to level 6. That should keep you busy for awhile. Past level 6, you can look back to 1st edition, or wait for the Advanced Hideouts & Hoodlums books coming out in the future!

Hi, I'm loving the game. Where can I find rules for character classes at level 7-10?

Thank you! If I was still on schedule, the Advanced Hideouts & Hoodlums Heroes Handbook would be out already. For now, everyone has to make do with extrapolating for themselves, based on what's in the basic book and the 1st edition books.

Thank you so much for introducing me to this game. I'm trying to lure my friends into a game. :) *two thumbs up and 5 stars*

Very kind, Anna! Now, to be fair, Anna's review is biased by her good experience playing a demo of it. I hope your reading experience is just as rewarding.

Is there going to be a print on demand option? I am a huge fan of Golden Age comics and would love a printed version of this.

Thank you! The things I miss when I go too long without looking in the discussion area!

A POD version has actually been available for some time now, but through Amazon (don't ask me to link to it here). I hit so many problems reformatting the book for DriveThruRPG's POD standards that I had to choose between ironing them all out or getting the Mobster Manual done in 2018, and opted for the latter. I am sorry for the inconvenience of this.

Just wanted to say thank you for your hard work over the years writing and developing this game.
I found that the newest version of the pdf has an odd effect where some words of sentences are bolded.

Actually, that wasn't a mistake. There are some rules that I wanted to call to the readers attention because they are short and easily missed otherwise -- I know because those are the things I had the most trouble finding when I was using a draft copy of the rules during playtesting sessions. Sorry I never explained why they were bolded, though!

I have to say I enjoyed reading these rules very much. I looked over the original rules, and you have made some nice improvements.
I'm looking forward to the Advanced 2nd edition rules as well as the additional Mobster supplement. Any ETA?

Thank you, James! I hesitant to even suggest an ETA for those books. This book was only supposed to take me one year and it took two and a half years to see it completed.

Still...much of the work for the AH&H Mobster Manual is already done (there was a LOT cut from the mobster section to keep that section from dominating the whole basic book) so...maybe I can ballpark and say late 2018...?

Thanks for the reply. Patience is a virtue I am still working on, but I am positive this will be worth the wait

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
